Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive

I'd like to know your thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of each drive system. I can see that direct drive is more in vogue over the last few years but is it superior to the other drive systems? I've had first-hand experiences with two out of the three drive systems but looking to learn more.

I have a belt drive turntable and I can say from MY experience that my direct drive seems a bit quieter to me. Never thought I would say that.
"I note that during the launch of the SP-10R, I was allowed to inspect their motor - and I could HEAR bearing noise when turning the spindle by hand. Obviously that matters."

Wow, you have sensitive ears.  LOL
One thing I will say about direct drive turntables... In specific, the Technics SP series and 1200G/GR is they have to be the most neutral turntables I’ve ever heard, especially the newer models from technics. You will truly hear what is there on the source, good or bad. If you want a bit of coloration, which is not a bad idea for some systems, the Idlers and Belt drives will provide that. The older Technics SP tables have a slight warmth coloration but for some, thats perfect.
Once one hears a great idler or direct drive, it would be very heard to go back to belt drive.  I have not heard a belt drive under 10 grand that can deliver the punch and very organic sound of the idler drive or the very accurate sound of the direct drive.  They really make music sound like music.  Under 10 grand if you want a decent belt drive table and can live with MM cartridges, the older B & O tables actually are not bad and can outperform many other belt drives.
