Raymonda I'm good thanks I have Charlie Millers version of it and it sounds amazing, I've shared it with a few folks here myself.

Charlie doesn't have a 5-8-77 release.

The 5-8-77 sbd comes from Hicks. still good.

Next yrs 40th ANNY should be blessed with the new Betty's (count on it)

Dave's Process for audio extraction for releases:

http://audiophilereview.com/analog/plangent---a-better-way-to-transfer-analog-tape.html

Time consuming but worth it.

Quote:

I've used Plangent Processes on a variety of projects for the Grateful Dead on older 16 track tapes as well as 2-track 7.5 ips material. The benefits of using the Plangent Process were added imaging, and outstanding clarity of the audio and pitch solidification...while keeping the original analog warmth.

- Jeffrey Norman, Grateful Dead

I'm surprised that David hasn't let out DaP 20 release info (video) yet?

I got the email it's shipping soon but no word yet.

Hoping it's worth the wait (anticipation).

@ Randy-11  I got tons of requests, hahaha (don't we all)?

Hey Randy 11 & Jafant -

Are you looking for Sound Test audiophile examples of the Plangent process (before & after)?

If that's what you were referencing, here ya go:

Sounds pretty good for '81.

I like the fact that it comes from the PA feed > SBD > Reels.

Dave L mentioned Healy did that here and definitely becomes a much "fuller" sound than most early '80's SBD's.

Just ripped to Flac for the seamless LLR>China>Rider closer.

NO gaps!!!!  Really good China > Rider

Listen to Jerry's ending notes to IKYR... He's got some angst in him!!

Go Jer !!!

Yes - They are released in HDCD after Plangent processing (see above).

HDCD obsolete?
From another forum:
I agree HDCD is not only alive and well, but should be used more, especially since DVD-A and SACD are pretty much dying on the vine. Unless the industry wants to start finally recording and issuing DVD-A at full resolution, and players are made available that will capture same, we would be better off just standardizing HDCD for all CDs and enjoy pretty much the same results (IMO). FYI, below is a link to a good article on DVD-A vs SACD that explains in part why we aren’t getting that touted high resolution on those formats.

Just made the DaP20 patch checks from Charlie’s transfer and yes indeed, DaP20 uses Jim Wise’s audience recording.

I.e.
Patch Info:
Sennheiser 421 -> Master Cassette -> CD (By Jim Wise) supplies:
  • Bird Song (last 8 seconds - post song tuning)
  • Mama Tried (complete song)
  • Mexicali Blues (0:00 - 1:38)
  • Scarlet Begonias (6:20 - 7:35)
  • Space (4:52 - end of track)
  • The Other One (0:00 - 4:19)

U can spin up DaP20 and look at these patch times from Charlie and you will see they are the same. +/- a couple seconds.
Would have been nice to give Jim some props in liner notes of DaP20 but they just grabbed it from LMA and did it on their own

So, in the end, we now know there was only one chain of master reels made by Healy this night.
