DAC with programmable chip(s)

Apologies for my forgetfulness as I get a little older...I was reading a series of posts a little while back -- it had to do with a DAC that used a "software-based" programmable DAC chip, rather than a stock chip like a Burr-Brown, Cirrus Logic, ESS Sabre, etc.  It was also mentioned that it's easily upgradable via occasional software updates, provided by the designer (who is very highly regarded in the industry, if I remember correctly).  I couldn't locate the series of posts despite doing a bunch of searches; anyone know which DAC product this might be ?    I just wanted to read up on it a bit more.   Any other info from anyone who might own it is also appreciated & welcome.
