Classical Music for Aficionados

I would like to start a thread, similar to Orpheus’ jazz site, for lovers of classical music.
I will list some of my favorite recordings, CDs as well as LP’s. While good sound is not a prime requisite, it will be a consideration.
Classical music lovers please feel free to add to my lists.
Discussion of musical and recording issues will be welcome.

I’ll start with a list of CDs.  Records to follow in a later post.

Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique.  Chesky  — Royal Phil. Orch.  Freccia, conductor.
Mahler:  Des Knaben Wunderhorn.  Vanguard Classics — Vienna Festival Orch. Prohaska, conductor.
Prokofiev:  Scythian Suite et. al.  DG  — Chicago Symphony  Abbado, conductor.
Brahms: Symphony #1.  Chesky — London Symph. Orch.  Horenstein, conductor.
Stravinsky: L’Histoire du Soldat. HDTT — Ars Nova.  Mandell, conductor.
Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances. Analogue Productions. — Dallas Symph Orch. Johanos, cond.
Respighi: Roman Festivals et. al. Chesky — Royal Phil. Orch. Freccia, conductor.

All of the above happen to be great sounding recordings, but, as I said, sonics is not a prerequisite.

One of the Great composers of Medieval Early Music .

Guillaume Dufay .

Its never too late for Early Music

If anyone thinks this is not Classical Music dozens of the best Classical Artists and Orchestras here and in Europe and Asia deem

"Ashokans Farewell" as one of the best pieces ever written in America.

The Farwell was a tribute to the Men of the State of all New York who

took the greatest burden ,alive and dead, in the Civil War .

Ashoka was an up-state lake .

Military Band is Royal Marines , one of the best in the world .

On second thought here is one the Master has something else to say, in Cantata , 106.,

In English his endless wisdom is , Gods Time Is The Best Time .

I knew all that and was out to do nothing but the music.

The music is what I said it was, you or Ungar or not.

New York sent 450, 000 to the war 60,000 died and about

150.000 were VERY badly wounded .

All else is irrelevant .

This receives  play at least once a week with the Great Lupu at the helm at my house.

Miracle indeed !

A mini-one is how little the music of the great Hindermith  is played in North America  .

I don’t know much but I did think like frogman’s cushion and why I made

PERFECTION .

The Great Leipzig Gewandhaus had men only from Leipzig Conservatory for over 200 years.

Stopped slowly after DDR collapsed which made me think Masur might  be  good for divas in US .

As the DDR was  in riot Masur walked among alone talking people to calm the mob  and  he did much .

. Masur is still beloved in Leipzig.

I have always liked the tech solid sound of this Polish artist that seems to have got little love here  when he was alive , or dead for that matter .

That Glazunov has so MUCH to say,I have one somewhere but doubt if it could

begin to do this Milstein .

I listened to it three times yesterday and my small brain said 3 times Glazunov is telling his life .

In any event he has something that is as good as any other and better than many!

The orchestra is stunning .

t

Celibidache always made me see things with his tempos of his mighty Munich men, .This great Brahm’s made me jump out of my chair , as good as any music I ever heard ! All the greatness that Brahms alone used was there in all his glory .

The use of Harmony devlop, minor 3rd.7minor balance, dotted semi-quarter16, the melodic 3 note idea. And on and on to heaven .

Indeed., I put mine in with "the Lark " .

More often than not Perlman is , great as he is, a bit thick for me. Just thought

I’d try him and he seemed on the spot with Glazunov .

I agree with you mahgister, and really admire your intellect.

As you say you and I are in the audience and I gather frogman is in the band .

He will hear things you and I will never hear , or want to and vice -versa .

Szeryng had a technic that he was is in complete control of in every second he played,

I never heard anyone like him ,

He was Polish . No one is more stubborn than they .

Then see this , our man is playing LvB trio with two of THE best on piano and

Bass in the world ! Concert is in Bonn , no mistakes there !

During rest all throw what and how things should be . And they don’t put their 2 cents in, more like their million bucks .

Not in English , no need  anyway .

I can believe the never practice alright. I love Vanguard but I pass

on this .

Since my Angel has saved my life more than once(no joke} I still think God knows

what he does .

This is my kind of music and players that do it.. And the best country they can do this in.

It is Christmas time and a Great Singer , one Pavarotti , comes on :7:28

with the Montreal Sym.

He was at his peak and I am not ashamed to say I cried.

This Elgar is a must, great sound and that Frankford Radio Symphony is beautiful !

Thanks Jim , your

frogman, Ignacy Pdererwski stole that from my Marine Drill Sgt. on Paris Island .

He just took the Push Outs, out.

All jokes aside, it is exactly what happens to a Marine re PT .

Took me a few decades to go on vacation , you must hear live music ,

to some Euro fest not here. Only ticket I could get was to Prague Spring ,

Ok, that’s something.

It’s something alright , an atomic bomb in a 6 mil country ,

which when you dig things up was making great music from 1200 to Leos Janacek.

This is from 1750 and is known a bit to Classical Slaves .

FWIW , If I had to say what is the most Musical country in the Western World it would be the Czech Republic .

Not the UK, USA, Germany, France, Austrian, Finland,Spain .Italy . or the man in the moon.

Hungry is second, but not close IMO.

This is Vlast , "My Land"

This and its composer are icons in Czech lands.

Smetana had something in common with Beethoven . he was deaf when he wrote it.

One reason I’m playing this is played by a German Orchestra which is seldom on

here or on any were else , with a Czech leader .

Bamburg is a small city , but perhaps the most Lovely one in Germany and IMO

has a very good Orchestra .

I enjoy this Mahler 5 better than any I have found, Old cut not the best sound, but IMO Barbirolli is the man.

This is the Barbirolli I love the  most.

He does his way with this , works for me .

I am a BIG fan of Haydn, IMO as good as anyone but Bach and he would like him

too. I love this masterpiece !

The Royal Concertgebouw and Sollima are also spot on in one of the most beautiful sounding halls in the world .

Well, you have the Greatest name possible so you should get the best in music as well. Let me know good or bad .

Happy New Year !

Does anyone know if a GoldenearTriton7 is good on Classical?

I have a chance to buy a pr for 600$ .6 months old.

It;s a death , I The wife knows what he paid for but 600$ for me is 6 bucks to her. and I ain’t poor .
