Classical Music for Aficionados

I would like to start a thread, similar to Orpheus’ jazz site, for lovers of classical music.
I will list some of my favorite recordings, CDs as well as LP’s. While good sound is not a prime requisite, it will be a consideration.
Classical music lovers please feel free to add to my lists.
Discussion of musical and recording issues will be welcome.

I’ll start with a list of CDs.  Records to follow in a later post.

Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique.  Chesky  — Royal Phil. Orch.  Freccia, conductor.
Mahler:  Des Knaben Wunderhorn.  Vanguard Classics — Vienna Festival Orch. Prohaska, conductor.
Prokofiev:  Scythian Suite et. al.  DG  — Chicago Symphony  Abbado, conductor.
Brahms: Symphony #1.  Chesky — London Symph. Orch.  Horenstein, conductor.
Stravinsky: L’Histoire du Soldat. HDTT — Ars Nova.  Mandell, conductor.
Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances. Analogue Productions. — Dallas Symph Orch. Johanos, cond.
Respighi: Roman Festivals et. al. Chesky — Royal Phil. Orch. Freccia, conductor.

All of the above happen to be great sounding recordings, but, as I said, sonics is not a prerequisite.

Jim204,

Just heard the UK has taken a Russian Cargo ship in the English Chanel .

Seems like only the Royal Navy could do that ?

Need a lot of guts anyway one looks at it.

I  can  only have the outmost respect for the fight of the Ukraine people but see no

way they can win.

Just so 204 , the man has mental problems but stupid he is not .

The people of Ukraine  are making heroic  efforts .

Some engineers had put TNT on a bridge , with a radio to send it off at the right time, but the radio was broken.

One soldier just stood up and walked down to set it off with his hand and himself .

How brave can a man be !

AMEN !

Talked to my man in Berlin. Germany always has a problem because of what the nation did , To their credit  EVERYTHING  is thought in every German school ,

Today they lifted their  face up and sent 1,000  anti-tank and 500 air  missiles to Ukraine .

Segen dir Deutschland !

My main bitch in Music  is that WALTON  never gets recorded or played in USA.

All most fell of my chair when one of our greatest artists , Gil Shaham, is in love

with him.

Proms is not best place but the Brimingham Symphony was up to it .

My favorite Walton is 1st Symphony with Preven/LSO .

Right you are 204, many are trying to mix classical with rock and roll  and call

it talent .On Tv a lot.

jim204.

From here it looks like Boris Johnson is growing up .

Looks OK on US TV , what does the Scottish Gent think ?

Great minds think ............

Lang may yer lum reek, Mo Charaid

Ist for the Horn is fantastic in the Minnesota

Jim204 , there is no way I could know anything you and twolefteas think., both good musicians , of what is at present great Chopin . And I mean that!

Nor is the piano my "wheelhouse" as they say .

But I do play around some times to see what I think MY poor ears like.

This is what I’m playing recently .

As we all know Ein Heldenleben is neither easy or short .

I heard it live at last , after I played 2 years of Self -Qurantine, I was good at ,

at the Minesota Orchestra Hall .

While I was gone some rich person had gifted them 4 ancient Italian Basse’s giving

more great base they already had , Cost, somewhere over 2 million,

I was upstairs with my 400$ deer glass, most folks don’t seem to know many musicians are tuning why playing , I love to watch the tiny flip of the little finger ,

which at times is talking to the conductor . This orchestra , right now, could play with the Wiener or Berlin . But they would need Klieiber .

Friends , there is something on here with the NY Phi. and a Great Conductor,

something you well NEVER see again if you live to be 200 !!

In NY there are people that understand the worst of in war in  more than in any American City.

As one , no Soldier that been though real hell has nothing but praise for the Ukraine Army !

Seems strange you do not show the MANY more children the US did the same to.

At least Canada has showed real remorse .

Why? Because Music , like anything else in the world, needs to tell the TRUTH !

Something you don’t like takes  VERY liitle time to read  it  and  none  to read it again and leave the truth seekers alone .

Well another DG,DG469-052-2   Shaham.Meyer.and Jian Wang, Chung is best I know.

Another good one is DelosCD303, Chamber Music Northwest.

If you can find one .

Never trust a Russian because Russians don't ever trust themself's .

Otto Von Bismark

We’ve had it for a thousand years and little or nothing good has come from the 90% . Just because you or I love it means nothing to our rulers , always has, always will. One word is supreme , GREED .

Nobody is trying to bully you .

I love Russian music but most of it was written in terrible times and made little to

the culture of  Russia .  Out  of 350 millions in US  perhaps 2 % even know Ives's  name .

I like music because it lifts  me  , Bach made me a different man but did nothing

to stop Hitler even though he got only 28% vote  in Berlin .

The same is close to here , very close .

Yes , I have them all .

More a worshiper than a fan ,esp. on Easter .

Listening to BWW 82, 'Ich habe genug" as I write this !

Happy Easter to all .

Radu Lupu was a Giant , no one was like him .

This Requiem is for us, he needs none. .

He was a deeply kindly .modest ,and a wonderful friend.

Jenny Vongel . his manager said he died peacefully at his home in Switzerland on Suday eve, April 17 . No better than that .

Jim204 , I Was going to say that Lupu was THE Schubert  pianist . But every one

knows  I am a Schubert freak  and  perhaps It would not go over well at his death .

BUT our Scottish  Icon of all things pianist did it for me.

I have every Lupu  of Schubert that  is (I think) and IMO no reason to play anything else !

I would not say someone is better on "The Lark " among the 10-15 top Violinist

alive or dead . I can say the Scottish Lady with the Italian name brings me faster to

tears than anyone ..

I have never seen any top

musician who has done anything like what she does for her people or her land !

When the National Childrens Orchestra came in I left my tears and just cried  .

Scotland Forever !

And I have a lot but not all . I am always struct how great the Czechs do it all out

with a another countryman. As as have said before, to my hears they are the most classical music bunch in Europe at least .

+ 1 on the FRANCK, Wore out mine .

Here is the people in the world that when they really put there mine in to it.

the rest of us can just forget about it .

Good thing too, they made their Air Force twice, as big in 5 years and their pilots

are thinking about China .And let us have 5 air bases.

Or how the Great German "second" orchestras are !

Almost as good as the Big Boys .

And Girls !

I can't get enough of Sibelius  , Finnish music and people in general .

Where's the best  to buy other than Amazon ?

I don’t like Tech of any form , wish i was like you Jim , but I’m just not .

I just finished with Presto for the Sibelius with a bit of Bach,Grieg and Holst  as well .

From "The Carls O’ Dysart "

We’ll live a’ our days

And them that comes behin"

Let them do the like.

And spend the gear they win .

A week in Scotland is worth a year  anywhere else ,lucky you !

Cheers

This is a Scottish composer who composed about any type of serious music there is.

I find him interesting but having a Scottish bias ............. I must be right !

This is the Grieg Piano Concerto, one of the "war-horses" often played .

The German Artist ,Julia Fisher. plays very well as you will hear.

Oh , by the way she is widely considered to be by many to be the worlds Greatest

Violinist .

She had just finished a Violin Concerto and has a fine voice as well .

The Orchestra is the Young German in Frankfurt
