There is a method that one can use to do this using mono recordings. You need a special device to do this with though when working with a stereo based vinyl system. You might want to contact Kevin Barrett at KAB Electro-Acoustics. He's a dedicated "vinyl addict" and offers quite a bit of vinyl related accessories and advice.
