Cause of Muddled Middle?

I would like to have better separation in the mid-range.

I feel like things are muddled while listening to a variety of CDs.

Is there anything obvious wrong with what I have? Here's the list:

Rotel RCD-1072 CD Player
Adcom GFP-750 Preamp
Rotel RB-1070 Amp
Audio Concepts Opal speakers
CAT Cables silver RCA interconnects
DH Labs Quick Silver Q-10 speaker cables

Yeah, the room is a good place to start. Mattress foam from Walmart. Experiment behind, between or on the side walls from your speakers. I just put it on the back walls of the built-in bookshelves next to my speakers. It made a huge difference. Because of the difference, I had to reposition the speakers to make them disappear again.
Doug is generally correct. Better stuff usually equals better sound. Room treatment doesn't work a miracle, only provides the opportunity to get the best from what you have. I also agree that in your case I'd look o upgrade the speakers.
