@nogaps actually i have a different experience hence i am asking about this. haha my 25w cary monoblocks have no issues powering my 90db kef reference 5s, and I really love them. I also hahe a dali minuet se that is 86db in my bedroom powered by 7w 45 tube push pull amp. Both have enough volume to satisfy me :) I listen at 80-85 db levels.
Can single ended 211 or 212 amplifiers drive magnepan 20.7?
Dear All
I have been reading up about maggies and am chasing after a huge immersive soundstage that the maggies provide, and would like to combine them with a sweet and musical sound that single ended tube amplifiers provide.
I currently own the cary 805 ae mono blocks which uses a single ended 211 class A output of ~25watts, and am wondering if an amplifier like this or something much bigger like the 212 single ended tube amplifier with 40-50w of class A1 output can drive the magnepan 20.7s?
Cant seem to find much info on the web, or people with any experience. Would definitely appreciate any advice or sharing of experiences here! :)
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Thegreenman

@kennymacc hahaha exactly right! tubes for tweeters and mids, large beefy solid states for the bass! |
@lcherepkai oic, will go take a looks at your speakers and amplifier! thanks for sharing the experience! |
@atmasphere hehe you are right! its 7 watt push pull with 4 45 tubes. I mentioned in my original post! hehe normally 45 set is 1.5 watts |
@atmasphere thanks for letting me know SETs wont work :( i know of those very rare stuff tt prob will, for example NAT audio large tube amps that output 120w class A, but the price is probably in the stratosphere. but yes I guess you are right in general esp these 2 tubes. Thanks for bringing me back to earth! |
@kennyc yeah that would be the best! I guess the only way out is the maggies 30.7 where you can drive the high/mid with SET, and woofers with high powered solid state! but price is abit more, and room size can be a constraint for many. |
@dseltz will check them out, thanks! any experience w the class D driving maggies? thanks |
@dseltz thanks so much for your input! :) and really appreciative of such a kind hearted and sweet soul like you offering to lend me your amplifier! :) Unfortunately im not anywhere near New Orleans. But very thankful for nice peeps around like you! ☺️ |
@atmasphere wow you really are the master! Thanks so much for your heartfelt advice! Think its the answer tt I dont like, but need to hear! Appreciate it a lot!
Also, what do you think about parallel single ended amplifiers? eg 2 or 4 211 tubes per channel? I have heard some people say PSEs lose the magic as their power supply is shared/compromised compared to pure SETs.
Thanks! |
@atmasphere thanks for the time and effort to explain to me! now I understand much better! 👍👍👍 I see thats why people introduce those nanocrystalline cores like finemet to reduce the saturation of the transformer! Now I understand better. Will go check out push pull or class D topologies! Wishing you a great week ahead and may you continue to spread wisdom and joy of hifi! ☺️☺️ |
@joeycastillo thanks for sharing your experience! interesting though that a 18w 845 amplifier cant drive it but a 25 watt pass labs can! both are class A 😅 will check out the atmaspheres, but very hard to find in my country |
@joeycastillo hahaha thanks for sharing! for me always tubes for easy to drive stuff :p even if i have to lose abit of bass :p for me i really dig the sweet highs and beautiful mids |
@assetmgrsc hahaha thanks for sharing! guess between soundstage scale and beautiful sweet highs/mids w tube magic i need to give up one of them! 😢 |
@atmasphere thanks for the detailed and thorough explaination as always! 👍👍☺️☺️ will go check out class D amplifiers, esp those ganfet ones :) |
@bdp24 wow 100 wpc from a pair of kt88 sounds abit too good to be true! either the tubes are pushed too hard or the designer created a wonderful circuit! always thought about 50 wpc was quite a fair bit already. |
@glenmschneider enjoy your 45 tubes! my current favourite tubes, but like you said, woefully inadequate for maggies! what brand/make of amplifier do you own? :) I have a 45 7w push pull from otomon :) |
@mapman thanks for the recommendation! what brand are you referring to? :) |
