Can one ever be "done" in this hobby?

I would like to think I am pretty much in audio nirvana right now but supremely well aware how quickly that can change to audio nervosa!

What do think?

Is it really possible to kick the addiction and be done and just sit back and enjoy the music?

Has anybody managed this trick of the mind?

Pretty sure my answer is quite definitely no.... doh!

Saw a listing for a set of Maggies, brand new in the box at a very fair price imho.

So yes I had to buy them as I always wondered how they may sound.

Placed them in system last night and deeply impressed, surprising bass extension and superb vocals and acoustic instruments. Another nice aspect is there is not a small listening sweet spot, I can move around the room and it sounds good in most areas, even right behind them!

I am thinking my room and its limitations especially on speaker placement actually worked much in their favour, about 3ft from back wall and 4ft from side walls and approx. 8ft apart.

Of course now I have to wonder just how much better some of the bigger Maggies might sound...…..

And on it goes!
Nope, I am beyond saving!

Just bought 2sets of speakers because dirt cheap and always wanted to try these particular ones and seriously eying up a Well Tempered Labs TT.

Do I need any of these items? Course not but decided what the heck does that matter!

Whatever I do not like will go towards upgrading my daughter's system so no loser in the game at all.
Well not much rhymes with nemesis of course so I can see it......😲😲

Please refrain from turning this thread into another trainwreck!
The Management.........
I got that part right away......

But as you decided to embellish the lesson so did I.......
Miller
So glad I do not fall into your category there, but I do fear that millions of drivers do.

Spent my formative years piloting motorcycles around some of the twistiest tracks in England, nothing quite like them anywhere here in the USA.
Google, Olivers Mount, Cadwell Park, Three Sisters etc.
You are absolutely correct, used to have a ball running around the inside or outside of uber expensive and new race replica bikes on a couple of different steeds I had just for the track, stripped down to the core to gain as much power to weight ratio as possible, one even ran total loss ignition, battery power only no generator.

Both looked like crap but were rock solid and as safe as any bike on a track could be, all money and time spent on brakes and tires.

Smooth was ALWAYS the key to going fast and trying to keep your cool, once you get excited and angry then you get ragged and lose time around the track

Or crash.... ouch!
Lmfao.....

Apparently Lucas ( Aka The Prince of Darkness to most British"sports car" owners) was looking the other way that day.....

Tbh although I lived in England for 40 years I never owned even one example of what were our idea of a "sports car".
I was lucky as Ford had just brought out the Capri and 3000GT was just the tool for an aspiring 18 year old on a perpetual hunt for...... use your imagination.

Unfortunately I found out the too hard way that their handling sadly lagged behind the performance as I reversed it into a lamppost at 70mph. Funny I could have sworn that post was in front of me when I entered the bend.....
Quickly back to the Roger Taylor car song.
He actually wrote it and dedicated it to one of the bands roadies who drove a Triumph TR4, but the exhaust note was considered a little emancipated hence Rogers Alfa became the stand in.

Truth or urban legend... you decide!
Dohanian.

Methinks you are correct and that has been said before in the thread.

I would like to think I am not at a stage with my gear that I can concentrate on the other side of the hobby which is just the music and enjoy.

However sites like this and Ebay do not help resist the temptation … lol.

Do items like new cartridges for existing turntables count as upgrades or can I just consider them "essential needs"!
Never enter a bazookoid fight with just a knife.

Whoa people
Anybody who watches my posts knows I am more than up for humour and somewhat snide and snarky posts a lot of the time, jeez louise!

But MG does have a valid point.

There is a big difference to a thread being derailed by excess troll activity and just some light hearted banter injection.

No I do not think this thread has reached troll activity levels yet but many potentially good threads have.

And GK I was being kind... no pooping in my thread please!
I am afraid I may have to agree with some of your post there MG.
And yes also admit part culpability to that end, usually when GK gets involved we end up spiraling downhill at a rapid rate of knots.
I do appreciate all the serious and on topic posts this thread has garnered to date as well though.
Some very sound reasoning there Dogma.

Can I put you down for 5800lps on my " how much vinyl do you have " thread?
Carpathian ( reminds me of Ghostbusters!)

I guess so, one of my favourite sayings is applicable here

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.....
Geoff is right?
Uh! I may just have to cut my fingers off.

Going to have to think about the question and get back to you......
Anyways enough off topic waffle and fluff, back to the meat and potatoes!

Day 18 and still clean!

Withdrawal symptoms have receded.
Yarp....lol.

And in the land that invented the lingo it would most definitely be are, not is.

Course all bets are off over here.....

😲😲😲😲

Mind I suppose it could be either thinking on, just depends how you wanted to inflect?

πŸ˜•πŸ˜•πŸ˜•
Lmao.

Glad it is not just me who is cursed with the addiction of scouring the classified listings even when I need nothing new.

It is good fun though!
Now playing with what I would have thought were subtle tweaks for pennies.

However not so subtle at all.

Raised my phono stage up and placed ceramic cones under it.

More detail but a little etched and definitely a loss of bottom end slam.

Placed Les Davis 3D2 pads under said ceramic cones.

Holy crap!

Truly impressed, have all the extra detail AND even more bottom slam than previous and mids brought forward a little.
Overall a very pleasant and immersive presentation.

Never would have thought such small changes at chumpchange level could yield such pleasing effects.

Always learning.......

Oh and i do have a Shakti Stone sitting on top near the rear as well.
Quite right Glupson.
It was actually Roger Taylor's personal car in fact.
The only song he fully wrote on the night at the opera album and sang on.

5 house points sir!
Mike
I had a quick look at that same book but I am afraid there are a LOT of albums contained therein that I could just never enjoy listening to at all.

Good source though.

10 years......
My mind cannot even begin to process having the same gear in 10 years time.

10 months maybe.......
Too funny Tomic.

With the exception of Slaw there is likely no more prolific poster in the music sections than myself.....

πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡
WTH??
That means change of setup of my gear.

Not change of the gear that my setup consists of.

I.e. ... Cost zero.....

Must try harder Padawanan....
Miller.

Where am I talking about the next big thing??

This thread was to see what members thought of the possibility of being done.

I have already said tuning and tweaking of current setup is the " next big thing".

However I may agree that there is no hope for me though... Lol.
Miller
We are on the same page I think.

But... I used to live for my Track Days!
Was so addicted I was up to 2 a month!

They were on my Track bike .
Used to have a blast on my ratty looking Kwak zxr 750 ( about $1500 all in) running around the inside or the outside( I would shove it wherever there was a gap) of the posers on their 10k plus showroom squeaky clean bikes.

Still have a real photo( before the days of digital!) Of myself gassing it hard out of a hairpin with wisps of smoke peeling off the rear tire. Rear wheel steering before the Japs made it commonplace!

Failed racer I admit, came from same little village as Rocket Ron Haslam, Google him if not familiar. Every kid wanted to be like Ron in my day.

But I digress......

Setup or change of set up maybe just my next big thing for now at least.
I have just about come to the conclusion it is very similar to a sick addiction I had for decades.... Cars....
How much horsepower do you really need?

Who cares?

Old saying .... Too much is never enough!

I have likely blown hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years on the quest for more power....

It nearly makes me ill to think of it now!

Nearly ... Lol.

Sure was fun at times!

Piloting a 70 Old 442 on its back wheels for the first 60 feet of the quarter is an essential memory!

Wish I had that car now... Oh darn there we go.......
@jtcfΒ

Really glad you can manage to just read about others and not feel that overwhelming urge to change.

I am getting there.

I feel mostly some tuning and tweaking is the order of the day for a while as I feel I have now managed to assemble a pretty sweet system.

To this end I have some brass cones, some ceramic cones and some lamp glass balls/footers to experiment with under amp and CD player... About $35 total.
MG

I actually completely agree with your statement... And Miller's to an extent.

Yes a lot of it is in the mind but the mind as being powerful can at the same time be a very weak thing and easily influenced.

These forums can and certainly ARE both blessing and curse!
