Building high-end 'tables cheap at Home Despot II

“For those who want the moon but can't afford it or those who can afford it but like to have fun and work with their hands, I'm willing to give out a recipe for a true high-end 'table which is easy to do, and fun to make as sky's the limit on design/creativity! The cost of materials, including 'table, is roughly $200 (depending, more or less), and add to that a Rega tonearm. The results are astonishing. I'll even tell/show you how to make chipboard look like marble and fool and impress all your friends. If there's interest I'll get on with this project, if not, I'll just continue making them in my basement. The next one I make will have a Corian top and have a zebra stripe pattern! Fun! Any takers?”

Come on guys!
Who cares who did what first or second. What is important is the collective work of everybody on Da Thread, the inspiration provoked by other peoples experiments. This has led to results non of us would have reached alone.
And it goes without saying that if Jean would not have started this quest there would have been nothing to report in the first place.

I will continue on this journey and post my results, all of you please do the same.
Goughary,
If you really have the old thread filed upto this august many including me would like to have it.
Perhaps you could post it at the Lenco Lovers site that at the moment has a far less complete version of Da Thread online.
Very very much appreciated
Jean,
Interesting developements! You have taken a route that I been thinking about too. However I have recently decided to go into an other direction, namely to drop the Lenco topplate altogether. I intent to have a new topplate lasercut from 5mm thick steel that is totally flat and will be glued to a ply/mdf sandwich. I hope this way you solve all the damping issues in one go. I am still working on this and don't know the cost involved yet, but I do know that most of the cost involved will be the programming of the lasercutter, so if more people would be iterested in this maybe I can order a small series instead of just one and prices will drop dramatically. More on this will follow!
Peter
My plan is to use steel because of its higher mass. the plan is for a 50x50cmm 5mm thick steel plate that will weigh aroung 8kg. It will have place for 2 arms one of which could be 12" or 9".
I plan to replace the idler adjustmentment with something simpler. You lose the disengagement possebility, but I haven't used it for while anyway and so far I cannot find any disadvantage. I know Jean said sometime ago the disengagement wasn't really neccessary.
I will try to post a picture of what I have done so far.
I expect the sonics of the material will be less significant due to the fact it will be glued to a very massive stack of ply and mdf. I think the sheer mass of the steelplate will be a bigger advantage.
Jean,
The main reason I took the standard speedadjustment system out is because that way you greatly increase the contact area between plate and plinth in the important area around the bearing. speed adjustment will still be possible, but with a little more hassle.
Hi jean,
interesting adventures you are having!
Regarding my new topplate quite a discussion has developed at the Lencolovers forum. Please have a look, I am interested in your comments.
Peter
Jean,
I am very interested in your rumble tests, but I am not too clear on the plinth you did the tests with. Is it your Giant lenco or did you use an older lighter version?
In other words should you need to go substantially beyond The Giant plinth?
Peter
Oregon,
What I propose to do is make a metal topplate that replaces the Lenco topplate. For more details please follow the links in the post above. Most info is in the first posts of the first link.
Peter
Some posts ago I have spoken about a custom made lasercut topplate I am designing. It has now reached its final stage.
You can read all about it here:

http://www.lenco-lovers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=158&start=80&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

I am now going to get a quote to see what the cost will be. I suspect that a major part of the price will be in programming the machine, so if we can spread the programming cost over as many plates as possible this just might be an affordable way to the Ultimate Lenco.

I have posted a survey here:

http://www.lenco-lovers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=231

to see how large the production run might be. Please add your name there if you are interested.
Thanks,
Peter
To everyone who has been involved in the custom topplate project: They're in!!! look at the lenco lovers site for pics.
Hi Jean,
I may be wrong but as far as I know the Klipsch Heresy is not a horn. It was called Heresy because of this fact!
Peter
Jean, great writing and all too true.
As I am putting more miles on my PTPL (Peter's Top Plate Lenco) it continues to amaze, it really is very good!
So far everything that wasn't already great has turned out to be an artefact of something else, not of the PTPL. I have finally ordered a DL103 that I will try as soon as it arrives.
Keep up the good work!
Peter
It is playing!
The first Lenco with custom made laser cut topplate.

First impression is that it is seriously good. I have invited mr. Kundalini to come and have a listen ;-)
For those interested in Mario's beautiful Interstate Lenco it might be interesting to know that his topplate is a cut down version of the special laser cut plate I designed. I am at the moment planning another series of these plates. If anybody is interested have a look here: http://www.lenco-lovers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1520

Peter
hi Jean,
I am happy to hear you like the results of my plate. The problem of clearance between platter and plate is easily solved by putting a washer between circlip and thrustplate support. Or you can simply add a second thrustplate.

This week I have posted the first pictures of the newest plate version the PTP3 on LencoLovers. The main difference is that speed change is now possible without taking the platter off. http://www.lenco-lovers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3341

Peter
I hope I am wrong but it looks like the LencoLovers forum has been shut down for good.
For those who feel a little homeless we have set up a refuge at http://lenco.proboards.com/

Hi Lew,
The PTP3 assembly guide will be available again on Lenco Heaven. Until then anyone who wants one can email me personally.
