Teeball: In a nutshell, 6.1 (6-channel) and 7.1 (7-channel) surround sound simply add more surround channels. Obviously, you would need either two or four more amplifier channels and corresponding speakers. At the present time, 6.1 and 7.1 are matrixed, rather than discrete, and there is virtually no software in either format (as the Bryston newsletter makes abundantly clear).
