Bryston's take on 6.1 & 7.1 surround sound

Bryston's current newsletter contains commentary by one of the top recording engineers in Hollywood regarding the viability of 6.1 and 7.1 surround sound. Whether or not you are considering "upgrading" to more channels, you might find the newsletter article interesting. Here is the Web address for the article:

Teeball: In a nutshell, 6.1 (6-channel) and 7.1 (7-channel) surround sound simply add more surround channels. Obviously, you would need either two or four more amplifier channels and corresponding speakers. At the present time, 6.1 and 7.1 are matrixed, rather than discrete, and there is virtually no software in either format (as the Bryston newsletter makes abundantly clear).
i would like more info on the topic of 6.1 & 7.1 surround sound if possible.
thanks.
Well, that's brief and to the point! Why would recording engineers go to the extra trouble if there is no real benefit and, more importantly in this world of hype, nobody cares? Thanks. I guess I'll stick with 5.1 (I can actually do 7.1 with my old Lexicon but can't justify the extra cost for the amps and speakers -- I know there are those who love it to death though and there must be a good reason so invite those who do to share their thoughts).
