Beware the audio guru

There are a few contributors to these forums who apparently see themselves as gurus. They speak in absolutes, using words such as "always" and "never." They make pronouncements about products or techniques they’ve never heard or experienced, justifying their conclusions because contrary claims are "impossible" or "snake oil." Those who disagree are accused of being "deluded," or suffering some insurmountable bias, or attempting to further some commercial agenda. On occasion, they have taunted detractors with an appeal that they engage in a wager - one guy wanted $25,000 cash up front and an agreement drafted by lawyers. Another offered 5-to-1 odds.

I am not going to tell you who to believe. But for anyone who might be uncertain about sorting out conflicting claims here, I suggest they consider the behavior of experts in other fields. No good doctor offers a 100 percent guarantee on any treatment or surgical procedure, even if medical science suggests success. No good attorney will tell you that you have a case that positively can’t be lost, even if the law appears to be on your side. No true professional will insult you for the questions you ask, or abandon you if you seek a second opinion.

A doctor conducts his own tests. An engineer makes his own measurements. Neither will insist the burden of documentation falls upon you.

These might be details to consider as you sift through the many conflicting claims made on Audiogon. In short: Decide for yourself. Don’t let other people tell you how to think, or listen.

People who state things that are highly subjective are not really hoping or expecting everyone to just take thier every word as gospel truth,(or at least lets hope thats the case).Often its just as innocent as sitting on the couch with someone and hearing something and mentioning it to the other person, silently expecting a corroborative response or the opposite. The natural world, (soundwaves included) is way way more complex than our technology of measuring is,so subjective should definitely be the priority and perhaps backed up by measurements when they are sophisticated enough to concur. When dealing with electronics we are always dealing with flow of electrons and even molecules and atoms.I read a while ago the fact, that one drop of water has more molecules than the number of grains of sand on all the world's beaches combined. With unimaginably small minuteness like that, electrons molecules etc.is there anyone who actually thinks that anyone in audio has measuring devices that tell it all? A lot of very experienced designers will tell you that measurements and how something actually sounds is often nill.Or even the opposite.I think our state of the art in measuring and our understanding of it still has many miles to go in 2018.The world is a lot more complex that many people comprehend. The next time you can't hear an FM broadcast until you stand up in a certain spot or have to extend your leg up in the air and hold it, just think of that.

Truth is important on here. Most people on here, similar to myself are always trying to get closer to "real"with our sound. We count on truth and beliefs to lead us in the right direction of what steps to take next.If something is false it leads us in the wrong direction; down the wrong path.Progress often depends on second guessing presumed assumptions. Many are taken for granted and etched into stone. One presumed assumption that I'm glad I second guessed is the so called D'appolito theory.According to his theory if you stack loudspeakers the speaker on top should be upside down so its tweeter is closer to the bottom speakers tweeter. With small bookshelf speakers I cannot hear any benefits doing this, regardless of "theory".Just the opposite in fact. I'm glad I tried the top speaker right side up the normal way.The sound improved immensely and his way the woofer is that many more inches higher up with much weakened bass.Another thing that's pretty much taken for granted is the idea that the top Tandberg cassette decks are the best in the world for sound quality for playing back tapes. There are a few better decks which actually sound like they could rival reel to reel if you forgive them some dynamics and a slightly smaller sound.Tandberg is one of the better cassette decks but not the cats meow.

It's funny how some people delude themselves into thinking they are the smartest most scientific ones on here and they bring the supernatural like "Blue Fairies" into it.While the ones being addressed are smart enough to build good amplifiers from scratch, are accomplished musicians on several different instruments and know how music should sound infinitely better than they do.They advise to stick to the facts and the majority of what they chime in with is highly subjective and not near facts. They pretend to be scientifically astute. When I was reading "Science & Method" and George Gamov's "One Two Three..Infinity", before I was 20 years old they were probably absorbed in"Archie" and "Scooby Door" comic books. Why pick on people on here.Do you have a problem? I think so.

Geoffkait is the member I am referring to.The one with a little ginger bread man pictured in the square block next to his username.I am new on here and am trying to generate some useful dialog and he keeps repeatedly responding to many of my posts,( I have a stalker),and even goes to the extreme of pasting a paragraph of my writing in his post,to try and make fun of what I say. Then he concocts in his mind and interjects words like "Blue Fairies" I guess in his great hopes that people will think his target is the one coming from la la land.At the end of his posting to me (I have never written him),he also comes up with something extremely sarcastic, with grand  hopes of discrediting or psychologically traumatizing  All that from a Gingerbread "boy". Why Don't you leave people alone on here and put on your apron and go bake some gingerbread cookies.

Re: dill and your sour-ness nonsense about something that does not concern you. I am home now and lets say I am going to be very busy, but I also can't help but notice you are THE VERY FIRST PERSON TO EVER RESPOND TO MY VERY FIRST POST and Geoff was not long after.Coincidence.I think not. Cheers....

Re: dill. It was you .My first discussion post was totally deleted because of someone using a bad word. You would have no way to look that up.ABSOLUTELY WRONG!.. THEME: dill trying to make someone look stupid. SUGGESTION:Realize you may not be that bright and quit pretending others are mentally challenged more than youseself.Jumping at any chance to make them look dumb is a psychological overcompensation neurosis mechanism and obviously needing to get a life.

Re: nonoise. The only other time I mentioned Mensa was in my first discussion post that got deleted over foul language, you must be following me very closely, and in all probability are a close friend, or the same person with 2 usernames that influenced that post to get deleted.Remember we are on here to discuss audio not "lets see if I can find someone to bother over fussbudgetry."Friends with dill and bdp24 I presume."

Re: bdp24.I find it funny about you  also; that anyone would be so pitifull to totally forget about spell-right and the many errors it puts us all through. The spell-right on my computer changes the abbreviation of packing to the word pig,the word for to furor and also misspells the word. t h e I r among many other words. Spell-right thinks its smarter than people and is a real pain in the rear and a screw up to boot.Sound familiar???? Once again this forum is about audio; not so important if someone really does miss a spelling.Language experts and spelling experts would be 2 totally different things anyway. With errors by spell-right so common I'll bet you are the only one on here who wouldn't be sharp enough to think of that.Like your friend dill you really need to get a life.

So; what we have here is 3 undoubtedly "related" characters with nothing better to do than get together and try to make Audiogon an unpleasant experience for a newcomer.Like high end audio itself, for Audiogon to thrive and grow it needs new people who sign in to join and who continue to stay on it and use it and buy.We will only do those things if we enjoy Audiogon. If I was Audiogon and I caught "anyone"trying to gang up on somebody and make Audiogon an unpleasant experience for them I would without hesitation "kick them off for good".Debates are one thing, but trying to make a joke of other people means you are a joke yourself. You 3 are like a rude cashier at a store that does not  give a sh*t about the store; that eventually loses the store enough customers to bring it down instead of growing. If I was Audiogon I would remove anyone who posts to personally put anyone down; and to try to make it an unpleasant experience for them.If something isn't fun, customers just drop like flies and go somewhere else.Audiogon wants to grow; with seedlings like you characters, it really holds things back.I Don't believe I just took 12 minutes of my time defending myself over disturbed individuals with nothing better to do than to make it uncomfortable for someone who is new on here. Is this your "turf" or something? Strange really strange !

Geoffkait may "say" he's an aerospace engineer, but in the Craigslist Personals someone told me there are always a lot of guys claiming to be in "Astronaut" college, because they see commercials on TV where girls really "dig" "astronauts." If he really is an aerospace engineer (or an engineer of any kind???) it would be surprising that he has so much time on his hands to have posted on here nearly 10,000 times.Nearly 10,000 Times!! Doesn't sound right to me, and anyone that knows me will tell you how I am Rarely wrong about such matters..If someone really has a good mind its hard to picture them verbally stalking somebody and multiple times pasting paragraphs from thier targets listings in thier own listings in an attempt to make them a joke. I think people who make fun of other people are rarely aerospace engineers..And at the bottom before the insult line he types in a series of arrows like a drummer hitting the drum after a joke; like a buildup to what he thinks is funny or profound. In one of his other responses on a different subject he again pasted one of my paragraphs on his listing and after it simply typed >>>>>>> "A Comedian is born." Like Mister know it all. Sounds more like someone who lives with thier Mom. I looked closer at his picture and it could be a combination voodoo gingerbread man.Strange, whatever it is. If someone really does have an exceptional mind it would make that kind of behavior all the more despicable.

I was lucky enough in my very early years to have landed a job that would be the equivalent of about an $80,000 a year job now, taking inflation into account. From very early on I had a lot of spending loot to play around with and I spent a lot of it on audio.Still do.I have owned well over 150 different audio items throughout the years(mostly trashed or traded in), and have learned and enjoyed what each piece does. Each one gives its own interpretation of music in its own way regardless of how uncolored it is.

I'm at my weekend Mensa Society meeting right now which usually lets out at 11 but its gone longer tonight because of some REAL INTERESTING DISCUSSIONS about topics MUCH MORE important than audio.Calling someone a "blowhard" and claiming "no offense intended" I think qualifies you as someone a few bottles short of a six pack.Stick to your own business, instead of getting involved in an obvious sadistic attack on somebody where that somebody exposes it and discusses it.What if people actually spend thier hard earned money on what a "claimed"engineer recommends and they are biased into buying it mail order cause its hard to hear stuff you want to in person nowadays.Your friend Geoffkait has not responded back.Has he been kicked off here??Or are you dill, one and the same as Geoffkait? I am a language expert and you both have very similar ways of speech, words used grammar etc.Now if you will excuse me I see a few very attractive Mensa ladies who want to go home.Maybe you can CALL your friend Geoff and discuss audio on a fine Saturday night.

Re:dill. My first post was doing fine until some person with multiple identities on here caused somebody to cuss.Wrong again with you.Are you ever correct on anything? It must be hard.

RE:Geoffkait. So you paste a whole paragraph of someone else's to give you the opportunity to do your >>>> insulting one liner remarks after the arrows thing.Sounds about as believable as OJ Simpson's innocence years later after he and his buddies raided the sports store with a bunch of deadly weapons.Yeah right.

ATTENTION:TO ANYONE ON HERE ESPECIALLY NEWBIES. It's best not to give out any personal information about yourself on here.I make sure never to give even my fist name or last name, what state if any I am from (could be from Europe for all anyone knows),any info about dealers you frequent,( there are no more high end stores around here; a pity) or anything else that would breach your anonymity. The 3 characters above are an example of a probable click and they are very suspicious to me for reasons discussed. My very first discussion post got removed over a member (similar in personality and theme with the 3 above),who was using 2 usernames and when he realized he was near to being "found out" he started talking like a black man with jive slang all of a sudden with his one username, in order to seem like he was two different people.Do like me and watch out and play it safe on not giving anything away about yourself in these discussion forums and lets realize we are all here for (clean) fun, sharing and learning.
Most, or all of these people commenting on my grammar, which is at least quite good, are obviously friends of the above.Nobody really thinks that all these characters are really so concerned about someone's grammar and syntax. They are obviously his buddies or himself under a 2nd username concerned over making somebody a fool. I've bought hundreds and hundreds of items on ebay etc. After this I've decided I will stick to that. When people like him lose Audiogon  enough people like me, your amps and speakers take a hell of a lot longer time to sell, if they ever will. I think its called shooting yourself in the foot and others too.The whole (Audiogon)actually suffers over ones like him.Like I say if something isn't fun I head elsewhere.I am never traumatized in the least over world class.....I know who I am and insecure idiots who like to make fun of people Don't change a thing with me.Its a GOOD LIFE and it will stay that way.I make good decisions.

I had a good time last night and I'm about to hit the sack, but before I do I will give everyone an even bigger "Whoa", as you spell it, form your own words from one of your  past posts.I am not so rude or insane that I would paste someone else's paragraph onto my Post in a grand effort to make them a joke like you do.The 3rd time you've done that with me. BUT ANYWAY quoting you: "A rich man has less chance of getting good sound than a camel going through the eye of a needle. You even have a little picture of a camel over the word camel and a pic of an eye over the word eye .Do you really think this is so? I'll bet that any good high end manufacturer or anyone who's been to shows or ever been to a good audio store at any time or any place would feel like splitting a gut laughing over that one.So you mean that people with Gryphon,Pass Labs,Solution,Audio Note,Audio Research and many others like that have little chance of  getting good sound??Perhaps sound like yours??Really?Your take from the Bible about rich men's chances of getting into heaven is not applicable to Audio in the real world. So according to you people with Audio Note Ongaku's or for heaven's sake Gaku On's can't get good sound like you have? I know Clint Eastwood has Rockport Equipment that cost a whole lot of money. Can't he get good sound either. All those Cowboy shows and Dirty Harry movies must have been all for nothing.I guess he's not as smart a guy as you either, huh? On the planet I reside on all those people have great sound.Anyone who would take your opinions seriously on anything at all, after a statement like that, really is someone sad.I Don't know what purpose you serve on here.To deceive people and steer them wrong? I haven't even looked through your posts to see what other ridiculous things you have to say.All I know is you keep pasting paragraphs from my posts into your posts and then at the bottom there is always the >>>>(that you do) and then the insulting comment. You are showing everyone on here what a world class you know what you are."Whoa" is right. You have got to be joking, and please stop pasting my paragraphs onto your posts, and I'm sure if there is a God looking down that he would appreciate you not misconstruing stuff that he says either. If you post or paste anything more about myself I will report you to Audiogon. You are a rare one..

Talking about a "Whoa"as you spell it.In a recent post of yours you say and I quote,"Its harder for a rich man to get good sound than a camel to go through the eye of a needle."Really??? So according to you all those people with Gryphon,Pass,Audio Research,Solution,Audio Note etc.have little chance huh? Clint Eastwood I know has expensive Rockport equipment. Can't he get good sound either? Maybe he's not as smart a guy as you, huh? Maybe all those Cowboy shows and Dirty Harry movies were for naught. After a stament like that I Don't believe anyone would ever take anything you say on here seriously. All those people have great sound. That is,  on the planet that the rest of us reside on. Are you here to steer people wrong and make fun of them.I don't know what you think you are proving by repeatedly pasting stuff from my listings onto your listings and then making a negative comment at the bottom.Do you think that other people are thinking "what a smart guy you are" over that, or do you think they are thinking "what a "world class" you know what you are and "the gall of him".If you paste another thing from my post onto your post I will contact Audiogon and I bet you won't try it again. If there is a God looking down I'm sure he would greatly  appreciate you not taking liberties with what he had to say either.
