Best universal player for $500 + above ave cdp

I have read most of the threads on this. There seems to be a similarity between the sony dvp3100es and the denon 2910. For around $500 - the Denon 2910 and the sony dvp3100es look alike. I like the hdmi and the dvdi connectivity capability. Which player plays redbooks the best (and it does not have to be one of these). I am open to any and all suggestions. Is there something else out there that I am missing? I am not a critical listener - I just want something reliable and sonically above average.
