Best quality digital gain control (line level)?

I am working on getting a design made for a custom preamp and it is controlled remotely by computer--no knobs--so I need a digital line level gain control. This is a multi-channel system, so there will be a dozen or so gain controls, so we need to use a component that is relatively compact.

The designer has initially recommended the Burr-Brown PGA2310 chip for this component. Are there other options we should be considering?
