Are DVD recorders adequate as players?

I have no experience with DVD recorders but need to get a "DVD recorder + VCR" combo, and was wondering if the DVD part would be adequate as a player?

The reason I ask is that I need a DVD player too, but if possible, ie, if the recorder would serve for a while, then I can afford to wait for what I really want: Oppo's Blu Ray player.

I have a Sony recorder that also upconverts, but it's main use is for transferring old 8mm/Hi-8/DVI and Tivo(Boxing) content to DVD.
If the point of comparison for the recorder/VCR combo is an inexpensive, mass market DVD player, then the recorder should do fine.

I don't think you need to agonize over this. If you need to have a recorder/VCR combo, and if you plan on buying an Oppo anyways, then I see no point in wasting money on another DVD player. Just sit tight with the recorder as a player and put the money you would have spent on a dedicated DVD player towards the Oppo you want to get.
