Hope this helps. The A M-1s are a terrific inexpensive speaker when used within their limitations. The AR M-1s are somewhat bass shy and aren't well suited for high SPLs. It would help to know if you're using a sub-woofer, what your room dimensions are, and the type of music you typically listen to. In my room they are on 28" Target stands 32" out from the rear wall. They are 68" apart and 38" from the side walls. I do not have them toed in at all. The tweeters are on the outer edge. Placing them against the back wall or closer to the side walls will improve bass reinforcement. However you trade off soundstage depth. In my experience the ke to a good sound with any speaker is to set it up for good upper bass and midrange performance and then adjst position slightly for lower bass. I prefer to error on the side of reduced bass for more realistic midrange. Use non-electronic music to set them up. Female vocals, piano music and jazz quartets in that order should get it for you. Toe in can improve high frequency response while tradinging off image width. By design they were intended to be pointed straight ahead and the distance between them should be approximately the distance from the listening position. I find placing them more than 7' apart results in poor upper bass. Of course your results will most likely differ based on your room specifics

As I recall, they were one the few speakers that gave such a wide sound stage even back all the way against the wall. I did also have the two fronts and center on 24" speaker stands and had two more for the rear mounted on a wall mount braket high up.

However, they sounded good in the begining but began to hurt my ears in long-term listening. I hope it was the amps that were driving them. But I couldn't use them after that.
