As an aside, does anyone know how to improve cd's that have digitalitis? Is it even possible? What caused it? It seems to me that it eliminates almost all cd's until about 1995. I do believe(without a lot of experimentation) that analog to cd sounds inferior to the analog itself(pre-1982). |
I do want to mention that I'm glad that Alex is going to redesign his site. I was thinking that people could help him in this area. His Forums are good, though. For those with less cash(who are reading this), his Denon 3910(my version) is unbelievable! |
Ackmann00, I have Alex's 3910 with Burr-Brown DAC's(circa summer 2006), and I know you won't be disappointed. He even said there was an upgrade that made a slight, but better difference. I didn't get that upgrade. If you are getting AKM DAC's, they are supposed to be better. If you got tube output, they are supposed to be better than my mosfets. Anyway, his 3910 beat my analog(circa 1992 Linn, Mana, etc.), so I don't think you will disappointed. I have to mention my mantra here. Play with volume. I don't think volume has anything to do with his players. I think it has to do with sitting behind the sound desk, and determining what sounds right. I find one volume, and play all cd's at that volume. |
Tvad, you've got to take it easy, or everyone is going to take all of your suggestions(i.e., Alex's offer of airfare, and my power cord purchase)! |
Oh my goodness! I understand from my reading that the AKM Dac's were better than my Burr-Brown, but my player sounds fantastic! What I'm wondering is, will the better player(i.e., AKM's) make poorer recordings sound slightly better, or, just in comparison, the good recordings sound obviously better with the better player(i.e., AKM Dac's). In the latter case, it might not be quite as important-you know what I mean? |
I enjoy, what has been stated about the 2.5. Can you guys give me a price on this? I just want to say that my 3910 from him(compared to analog, and designed with analog in mind), blows away my analog($10,000 in 1992). I may hsve actually heard it! I don't know what is going on, but I love music! |
Guidocorona, you know that I won't be spending that much. I have to applaud what Alex has done with his APL 3910. It's actually unbelievable. Unfortunately, I can't translate it into an actual product. My best guess, is to get one of his 3910's or upgrade to the 3930. Hell, you have to ask Alex. Before you go to AKM dac's, or tubes, you should look into this. This is, a for sure, conduit into music. I'm not kidding here. |
Guidocorona, not having money may be a blessing in disguise! Look for the opportunities that it presents to you. |
I just thought of something tonight. When I first listened to Alex's system, I told Alex that I got unusually high from it, and that it lasted about an hour. At home, I was listening to analog only, and my system didn't affect me that way. I asked Alex what I could do to my system to try to duplicate that. He said to buy one of his cd players. Well, the other night I was listening to Ori's(Oritek Audio)modded Zhalou DAC(which is excellent), and I remarked that my APL 3910 sounded more euphonic than the Zhalou. I could be wrong, but I think that might be what separates Alex's players from other players. |
Audiosu, I'm kind-of in the same boat as you. While I certainly believe in the source first, my speakers are from 1980, and they have one woofer that is just glued in, and inconsistent fasteners for the rest of the woofers and tweeters. It is this last thing that bothers me the most. You have to admit that we have an avenue to upgrade our players. It is exciting-which is how I would describe APL's players! I'de also like to mention Earflappin's suggestion about Alex's interconnects. I don't completely understand it, but on Alex's system, it made my very fine interconnects(which are used on my APL 3910) sound uneven. Alex's interconnects opened up a whole area in the highs that my interconnect overlooked. |
Any of you guys throw away stuff that you've found wanting? If so,I was thinking of doing some serious dumpster diving. BTW, thanks for all the interesting information you guys put out. |
Forgive my brain-lock here. I have my APL 3910 going into a preamp, also. If one were to connect the 3910 directly, how would one still use his analog? Maybe I need to contact the Rockport gentleman, since he has the APL NWO 2.5, and likes the direct connection, I believe. I do know that he will find a way to still use his Rockport. |
Thanks guys for the advice. Let me point out that Alex's CDr of his previous Gyrodec/Denon 103R(?) versus Rockport/Zanden killed it. Now, I was unfamiliar with both recordings, but it seemed that the Rockport CDr had almost a line drawn across the soundstage, about halfway up. Now, this is not a critism of the Rockport set-up. It just shows what Alex is capable of. I believe he also had a motor-controller for the belt drive, that he designed. I hope to get some input on my analog(circa 1992 Linn, etc.) when I visit Alex soon. If this sounds like a kiss-up of Alex, I guess it is! Alex does something to music that escapes most people, I believe. I just have to mention that I have been exposed to Meitner and Oritek Audio(a huge bargain here), also. |
