Very nice unit. I use it sometimes directly connected to my CJ amp. It has its own volume control and you can connect three digital sources to it. There is a re-clock option which I would recommend. If you don't have any LPs or tuner, then there is no need for a preamp.
I have compared it to my Elite 41A and have to say it delivers a braider soundstage and better micro dynamics. I have not compared it to other high end DAC's but I would suggest you do a search on the Web for reviews at Audiophilia and 6 Moons to get a detailed comparison.
