Hello, I am right now listening to my WP6’s paired with my
McIntosh MC402 SVS amp and McIntosh C2500 tube pre. To me (and my other pro audio friends who have heard it) sounds just wonderful. Are there “better” amps? Yes. Are there more expensive and more troublesome? Absolutely. I had all Audio Research before and it was very good too. However I prefer the McIntosh for two reasons , the WP6 are 4ohm or less and therefore really wake up when you have a lot of power and headroom. Even if you don’t listen at full volume levels. Hence the 402 at 400 watts per ch.
Secondly I found the Audio Research to sound really good on well recorded material. But on older less hi if recordings. It can really accuratly reproduce the shortcoming in the recording. Whereas the McIntosh tends to make more music more listenable more of the time. As others have said depends on your taste and style of music you enjoy. The WP are amazing speakers and you will be able to hear the difference in electronics driving them.
Enjoy
