Amp/Preamp Help & Suggestions

I realize this is a basic problem, but I'm not very knowledgeable in this area. I believe I need a preamp, but I'm not sure.

Here's my setup:

Turntable (Technics SL-1200)
Cartridge (Denon DL-160)
Speakers (Audioengine A2)

My problem is that the sound isn't loud enough right now because the turntable is connected directly to these fairly small speakers.

It's worth noting that I'm a student with limited space. Also, I'm trying to create a decent quality of sound with a small budget.

So, I would appreciate some suggestions on some specific models that would increase the volume of my turntable.

Thanks

The magnetic cartridges used in turntables require a different type of input than the line input on your powered speakers. You may have seen these referred to as a phono preamp and its job is to compensate for the RIAA equalization curve that goes along with vinyl playback. Without changing your current set-up, look to Cambridge Audio, NAD, Music Hall or Project for an entry level phono preamp that would sit between your turntable and the powered speakers. It should set you back a $100 or so.

Thanks for the prompt and helpful response. I was thinking that was basically what needed to be done, but didn't know how to word it properly.

I've decided to get the Cambridge Audio Azur 640P. I can't wait to try it out!
