Along the same lines as "Don't Neglect to check your Caps!"
As @stuartk recently posted regarding the replacement of speaker caps, I have had a similar experience with my Aragon 4004 amp. I am the second owner and obtained it from my very good friend along with matching preamp and dac. I had already re-capped the preamp as a preventive measure as all of this equipment is 30-ish years old. I had ordered the set of four power supply caps for the amp last fall, but only got them installed last week. It was already too late as two of them had started leaking. I can only say that after the replacement, it was like getting a new and upgraded component! I don't have anything near a top-notch system, but wow! The difference was immediately noticeable. There is a bit more volume, much more bass, and just more rightness in what I am hearing. I think that the annoying tweeter problems that so many of you have complained about from B&W speakers has been lessened.
I am now contemplating whether to perform the MarkII upgrade or just finish the re-cap. I have re-capped and fiddled with a couple of different components in the past, and have read about and experienced capacitor failures. If you, like I, have vintage or near vintage equipment, don't be shy about taking a peak under the hood. I know that many of you are more proactive and more proficient that I am, but as stated in the speaker cap thread, you might not know how far your gear has lost its ability to make what you hear enjoyable. Just my opinion from an audio cheapskate. Best wishes!
