Absolute top tier DAC for standard res Redbook CD

Hi All.

Putting together a reference level system.
My Source is predominantly standard 16/44 played from a MacMini using iTunes and Amarra. Some of my music is purchased from iTunes and the rest is ripped from standard CD's.
For my tastes in music, my high def catalogues are still limited; so Redbook 16/44 will be my primary source for quite some time.

I'm not spending DCS or MSB money. But $15-20k retail is not out of the question.

Upsampling vs non-upsampling?
USB input vs SPDIF?

All opinions welcome.

And I know I need to hear them, but getting these ultra $$$ DAC's into your house for an audition ain't easy.

Looking for musical, emotional, engaging, accurate , with great dimension. Not looking for analytical and sterile.

@mattnshilp

Since you've been tuning to less musical and totally "un-cap-able" with complex music passages, with your go to DACs, I'm very much looking forward to your impressions and findings. : )
Billions are listening to music off of their phone digital to analog convertors. I'm guessing most are quite happy with that performance.

Perfectly good DACs from pennies on up. Relatively speaking $30 to say, a dollar, can also be considered outrageous.

I started my DAC journey with similar outboard cards/convertors. Absolutely fine sound.

@mattnshilp  Very respectful move. I'm sincerely curious.

@markolino72  You are the one who has the privilege of removing your posts. The only one I'd deem worthy of that is the one made at  10-25-2017 12:37pm , but that's still your call.

Lets hear what Mattnshilp finds.
@mattnshilp   The majority of you post is about the Boulder. I say that (may) be all you need to know. Good times, indeed.
Agree. Others, in the same vein: Drops of water. Audience applause. Conversations. Dog barking. Etc.
Matt, You may have intended it as a joke, but it does not read like a joke. I can see how the second line "Sorry, Had to be done!!" would lead one to a very different conclusion.

Onwards to learning about DACs and your journey with them. I have to catch up on a few videos...Google's been notifying me. : )
Matt, no need for an apology (in case it was directed at me) as I was neither offended nor insulted. I enjoy this thread (even when it diverges from the primary intent) and now your videos and am looking for more insights and learning via both media.

Thank you for your recommendation on 'The Greatest Showman.' I like both leads and the 90% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes speaks volumes. I'm looking forward to being emotionally moved.
Matt, thanks for sharing. Isolation is so important and easy to implement and the results are outsized in their rewards.

It makes sense to hold off until the Orea Bordeaux is available.

FYI, I have found that the Gaias fall apart before hitting their weight limits, (implemented under speakers).

I'm not surprised by your results with your Preamplifier. I've experienced marginal gains (so far) with my preamp....everything else has responded fabulously.

Give Ingress Engineering's RollerBlocks a try. A very good value...in case you want to try something else. The Level 3 Version 2, specifically...Request the carbide bearings.

Looking forward to your ongoing findings and results.
I’m using Anvil Turntable Footers under my Preamp. Bruce McDougall’s Footer (designed for turntable applications though applicable elsewhere, dependant on weight limits) is an interesting product. It requires more care in setup and getting dialed in. His Footers are definitely worth checking out. They did and continue to make a difference under my preamp...which was the least responsive to the other footers I tried.
I do feel that there’s an overemphasis placed on speakers in audiophile threads/discussions at times. Obvious each link of the audio chain matters. If I had to choose one or the other, I’d select great electronics with "good" speakers rather than good electronics with "great" speakers. This puts me in a minority position but it’s based on many listening experiences.

Charles, +1.  Add me to your member count for this 'minority' position. : )
@mattnshilp   Thanks for sharing your findings. Very informative and good to know your specific results/outcomes.
@ everyone  Any recommendations for an upper tier DAC with a very well implemented volume control? I'm looking for DAC first components (and not Preamps with a DAC module...if that makes sense...).  Thanks.

@toetapaudio @bill_k  @ctsooner  @guidocorona  Thank you. I will look into your recommendations and get back to you should I have specific questions.
@mattnshilp , thread followers, and thread contributors:  I'm experiencing some 'curious' results and would like your thoughts and opinions.

This thread is primarily about impact / results when a DAC is changed.

I'm finding that changes to my system are bringing more than significant results while keeping, what would be considered a 'basic' DAC, by the metrics applied in this thread, static.

Anyways, it's making me question the logic of DAC changes in 'static systems' vs a 'static DAC' in a 'dynamic system.'

Hope I'm making myself clear.  Thanks.
