AA for us

Is there such a place for us audiophiles: Audiophile's Anonymous? I feel that at this point that I am showing all signs of an addict and I am no longer a functioning addict, unfortunately.

The only upside is that it is distracting me from other harmful activities such as watching the news x hours a day.

@dekay unfortunately my other obsession is the  weather, and climate changedevil and writing weather apps, thanks for pushing me further into the hole

@cdc real post. Very astute observation about whether

unhappy and can’t find what you want or you ARE happy and curious about what out there

Both, and in between; when it's an addiction, it's about the feeling of wanting more and something different, and not being able to stop.

Sounds like I am surrounded by wise people here. Better than the opposite.

@frankmc195 I am not a big spender - because of the wife. But I sure have my secrets.

@roadcykler it is definitely fuel to the fire. I shall take a break, go to rehab, drink Peri Peri.

@gkelly my budget is so small I can relate to the saving up part, but unfortunately my conscience is not fighting me much.

@dekay Totally. I will try anything on everything.

@maxwave it's not about the new ones on the market but all the old ones I had never heard cool

thanks @cdc!

I am not just stuck at B, I am stuck in the sound quality deterioration spiral. It's probably just in my head. The more things I change or try, the worse it gets - I think.

very relevant article, thanks @shtinkydog !

@stuartk the more comments on this post, the better I define my problem, and realize that even if I moved into Alma Audio permanently, I still wouldn't be "over it". I need to find the OCD cure.

@stuartk

do you actually know what sort of presentation(s) you prefer?

not insulting at all. I have a smallish room, I am close to the speakers and I like a relaxed but big sound, on the warm side - nothing fancy.

@dekay my gear is mostly vintage, what other people would store in the garage, boxed up.

@ghdprentice you are right, the issue is my process, not very pragmatic, just impulsive. It wouldn't even call it a process. But if I learn along the way, I should be to make smarter decisions. I am in the negative feedback loop where I feel the more decisions I make the dumber they are that make me unhappier, with my budget spent and reduced, and then I end up with doubts and a lot of lessons learned at my own expense. The opposite of rewarding...

@deep_333 we don't need to put a number on it, that's when it begins to spiral - I just need X to have a nice system but then what about 1.2X... and then 1.5X?

yes, added more @mitch2 and I added X that applies to me

excessive system cost to income ratio
excessive system cost to disposable/WAS (wife approved spending) ratio x
tweaks and cables infatuation
flavor of the day compulsion
connection cleaning mania
golden ears delusion x
fear of missing out phobia x
audio gear hoarding disorder x
fear of leaving the basement
repetitive music track syndrome
on-line forum obsession x
fear that wife finds out x
fear that wife comes home first and finds package x
I have to have that junk once in my life (for no apparent reason other than to have it)/similar to hoarding x
search for imaging that does not exist
obsessive fear that one channel will go randomly x
    pervasive misrepresentation of prices paid
   irrational perceived impunity from WAF

@rock-on you have an approach, discipline and not a flawed OCD personality like mine. Still, your suggestions are golden and I will heed as much as I can!

One note: I am not affected by marketing. HOWEVER, I am sucker for aesthetics so in a way that is marketing too, and in that sense, I am swayed - I am a collector of beautiful objects.

@oberoniaomnia again, you are treating me as if I were normal, without serious issues angel One must show up for the intervention and be talked to, as a patient, to start the healing.

BTW British Audiophile is wicked awesome.

You have an incredible system.

@oberoniaomnia

court appointed guardian

wife does a good job :)

Your system is epic! To put it lightly. Thanks for the evolution story...

@mahler123 yes, Europe is (mostly) great! Avoid Hungary :)

Thank you for your kind note,

I usually get the first 20% completely messed up and then it's all downhill from there.

@bolong Not for me. I am an introvert, making connections, new relationships is way outside my comfort zone

@bolong. Got it.... I feel this is hobby to me is more like gambling. I keep going back and losing devil

Gutenberg is a promoter, not a reviewer, as I read somewhere was his own admission.

His last youtube post about the KLIPSCH OJAS speaker was funny. Unintentionally

@bolong From the other angle: I guess you can be a promoter - primarilly, when your review is not focusing on objectivity. You would just say nice things about the product - in a way that you are not lying but not making an effort either.

Real reviews are done in a bubble, usually with products borrowed from a friend and not from the manufacturer .

Whereas when you review and not promote, you are focusing on the product and your methodology, to be transparent and thorough and fair and conclusive, If any of those are missing, it’s a presentation not a review.

If your review is positive, you can be called a promoter but it depends on the context.

@bolong

Guttenberg only discusses equipment that he already likes if that is what you mean.

that part is fair. He had said it and explained why there is no point in reviewing what he does not.

Disclaimer: I don’t like his reviews. I honestly don’t understand his popularity. The words he is using, the methodology (if any), it’s so vague and inconclusive, I learn nothing. It’s a tough job, I admit, reviewing stereo equipment, but Erin’s AudioCorner is pretty good, and a few others, who were born without the ability to BS and everything they say is relevant, they say it for a reason, for what they want you to know, not for what they want you to feel or like or believe.

I also think he talks down, he has a lecturing style that I don’t get.
