the OP is spot on with these speakers. I've had a pair of the Atalante 5 for about a year and half and have been loving them. They replaced a pair of Spendor D7s, which were just not playing nice in my large basement room. This room robs speakers of bass in the middle of the room where the seating position is. The D7s were also just too hot in upper mid range and lower treble and could be fatiguing when you turn up the volume to 80db or so.
I needed a change and the Atalante 5 were a lot more easier going, while also having good detail. They are not as lightning fast as the Spendors, but that was a tradeoff I was willing to accept. Very happy with them thus far. They do have a little peak around 4k hz, which I EQ down a touch. They also can overwhelm a room in the mid bass if you put them close to a wall. I actually enjoy the sound more with the ports plugged even 2 feet off the wall. I have a couple REL subs that I still use the flesh out the lowest octave, but honestly not a big difference with the subs off.
