SHM-CDs and digital files Thanks for the information, Favresj. I have yet to choose a DAC. I'm still running a 1/8" cord out of my PowerBook G4 -- not ideal, but better than old cassette tapes :-)
Ripping CDs to lossless in Itunes.. HiFi approved? To follow up... I did my own comparison of Apple Lossless vs. AIFF (using my PowerBook G4 1.67GHz, connected via analog 1/8" jack to an Arcam FMJ w/ Dynaudio speakers). I did a blind A/B test and scored 50% (half my guesses were right, half were w...
Ripping CDs to lossless in Itunes.. HiFi approved? Hi Ed. Actually, I was trying to get Splaskin's attention, since he's the one who made the claim about speed. (I've got a 1.67GHz PowerBook G4.) I'm not sure I would notice a difference anyway. The PowerBook currently is connected to my system via...
Ripping CDs to lossless in Itunes.. HiFi approved? 09-28-08: SplaskinEd,The slower the CPU, the worse Apple Lossless will sound. Faster CPU, no difference between AIFF and Apple Lossless. How fast is fast? I.e., at what speed do you notice no difference?
Quietest 500GB Firewire drive? Fytunes,Yes, I know -- I listed the LaCie d2 Quadra among my choices! The question is: how quiet is it? For example, if I'm listening to a quiet classical or jazz piece, I don't want to be reminded of a humming silver metal brick during the silent...
Quietest 500GB Firewire drive? Macdad,I've already got a 1TB LaCie drive for backup so, unless both drives fail simultaneously, I'm not too concerned about data loss.
Quietest 500GB Firewire drive? correction: the Seagate option should say Seagate FreeAgent "Desk" for Mac (the "Go" version doesn't come in a 500GB size).
PowerBook G4 + Apple Express + iTunes +? to analog Steve said:why do you need the AE?I currently use an AE as a base station/Internet router in my office, which is where I store my music (on a noisy Lacie 500GB hard drive). I use this AE + wi-fi network to beam my music to my PowerBook in my liste...
PowerBook G4 + Apple Express + iTunes +? to analog Steve, are you saying thatG5 -> WiFi -> AE -> Powerbook -> Firewire/USB -> Reclocker -> S/PDIF coax -> DAC -> analog -> Arcam ampis not desirable or technical feasible? If so, Why?
PowerBook G4 + Apple Express + iTunes +? to analog Steve, just to clarify...I said:Where in this hierarchy would you place the following setup: AE (wirelessly) to PowerBook to (via Firewire or USB) reclocker to DAC to Arcam amp?The source of the music files is my PowerMac G5/Lacie Firewire hard dr...
PowerBook G4 + Apple Express + iTunes +? to analog Steve, thanks for the additional information. I have another follow-up question. You said:The ideal scenerio is the AE driving some kind of reclocker and then outputting I2S bus to a good DAC. This will achieve the lowest jitter and the best analo...
PowerBook G4 + Apple Express + iTunes +? to analog Steve,Thanks for your response. I'm a newbie to digital audiophile-dom, so could you please clarify a couple basic concepts for me... 1. Are you saying Airport Express's optical *and* analog outputs are jittery? Does AE jitter come into play if I'...
PowerBook G4 + Apple Express + iTunes +? to analog Thanks Sammie and KJ for your responses. I'm still assessing my situation and reading more on the topic. KJ, why do you have both Airport Expresses *and* DACs? Are you doing this to bypass the AE's built-in DAC? Perhaps this explains why you haven...
Amps for Dynaudio Audience 72? More specs on the speakers: IEC long term power: 210W. The manufacturer recommends >25W for small room, >65 for medium, >125W for large. No dimensions given, so I don't know if I have a "small" or "medium" room. |
