Yes molsburg, I’m using a Manley Steelhead phono and a Manley 300B Classic linesatge. There are volume knobs on the front of the chassis but they have a limited range.i find them very good for balancing the stereo channels.

Nature of Koetsu carts
Btw I’m running an Ikeda 345 tonearm (heavy) with theidler drive Jean Nantais Mk ll. Jean seems to have a thingfor Koetsu carts and this looks like a good combination to me. Any comments? 
Modern carts based on ortofon spu?
I’ve seen an almost conventional cart from Ortofon.i believe it is called the Royal.  One just needs anOrtofon headshell to mount it.

Looking for a Phono pre around 1K
Have you seen the Sutherland PH3D? Runs on a pack of 16 D cells. Playing timeis said to be 1200 hours and has been derived from more expensive units bythis company. 
Tonearm recommendation
Go for the DP-8. Get the heavy wand option. No bearing to speak of. Brilliant design. Case closed lol.
