The very best sound: Direct to Disc
As some of you may know, Peter Lindemann at Soundsmith has been recording a number of D2D performances on his own cutting rig for some time now and offering them for sale. It's all to support a child welfare charity that he is a part of. You can c...
marantz SLT 12-u turntable
Hi, I had the old Shure based model back in the 70s. It was a beautiful design but difficult to set up. But once properly balanced it was terrific for its day. Some years ago I bought a used universal version for a second system for old times sake...

I'll email Brent Jesse about this as well and let you know.
MFY Tungsol 6550 tube old versions
Are you sure it's a smooth grey plate? Those letter codes in place of the year code indicate that it's a late vintage black plate circa 1959/1960 just before they went to the smooth grey plates. It might be the first grey plate version. Who knows?...
FM tuners - Are they OBSOLETE ?
I'm plugged in to Sirius/Xm through Dish Network to my big rig preamp. Listen to the blues channel plus other formats. Surprising audio quality perhaps a touch less than the best tuner [Marantz 10B?] but no commercials or other interruptions. Who ...
Decoupling the Platter from the Subplatter
Get some of those little round cork self adhesive feet used to put on the bottom of vases and table lamps to prevent damage to wood surfaces. You can find them in sheets of 12 or so at any hardware store. They worked great between the platter and ...
how do you determine anti-skate settings?
There are various vinyl test records that you can get on line. Just google them. They'll usually have a blank unrecorded cut long enough to adjust for anti skating along with frequency tones, balance test ect. Luckily I have an old Johnny Winter "...
Denon DL-160 v. Grado Gold cartridge??
I recently bought a 160 as a temporary backup for a Grado Sonata which is at the next level above the Gold while I waited for the Grado's retip [it takes awhile]. I'm VERY impressed with it. It needs no step up unit as other moving coils require a...
Best blues guitarist, Clapton or Green
Get the Bluesbreaker's "Hard Road" which has Peter Green replacing Clapton on guitar [excellent] or a couple of the first Fleetwood Mac recordings with Green on guitar. All are easily available on CD. The 'middle period" Fleetwood Macs without Gre...
Best blues guitarist, Clapton or Green
We can argue over some of the stuff Clapton has done over the years but his couple of years with Cream were historic. I was at the Winterland concert the weekend Crossroads and Spoonful were recorded at the Fillmore for Wheels of Fire. They remain...
Counterpoint SA12
By the way my 23 year old SA12 in a second vacation home system finally dropped a channel the other day. Probably fried a MOSFET since the tubes were OK. Repairs and mods on these units are VERY expensive. The original designer is still around and...
