And the biggest influence on sound quality is...
I appreciate 2psyop's mention of hearing aids.  Many of us (me) have compromised hearing associated with aging.  I have good HAs, a good small room system, and a very good desktop setup.  I almost never use HAs when I'm listening to either system....

New Klipsch Klipschorn AK7 & La Scala AL6 will be active DSP Crossover
All in all, it seems as if Klipsch is having a moment.  Actually, if I'm reading the tea leaves correctly, the Klipsch moment is connected to a couple of other moments: 1) the growing (though still niche) popularity of low power SET amps, and 2) g...
What are your top 3 favorite turntable companies (manufacturer) and why?
1972-81 Pioneer direct drive table with Shure M93ED cart.  No longer in production was the best table I ever had and never should have sold it.  This is more of a recommend for direct drive than Pioneer tables.  Replaced it with a cheap Japanese t...
Unipivot tone arms
I have had two undamped VPI unipivots, a 9" on the Scoutmaster and a 10" on the Prime.  Yes, they are "fiddly" and need to be handled with care, but I like the simple technology and have never noticed any distortion or noise that I could attribute...
Iphone -> Audioquest Dragonfly Red -> Hifiman Ananda
I had a similar experience as the original post with iPhone, AQ Dragonfly Cobalt and (now discontinued) wired Sennheiser Momentum headphones.  It convinced me that I needed a new DAC in my main system . . . and subsequent upgrades as well.  But ye...
Which is best, using balanced or non-balanced connection?
Along these same lines (pun intended) I run RCAs from my table to a phono preamp and balanced from the phono pre to the pre, then RCAs to the amp that does not have an XLR connection.  Is there any point in running a balanced interconnect in a cir...
Help me build up a jazz album collection. Can you suggest a must have album?
The Modern Jazz Quartet. "The Last Concert" live at Carnegie Hall.  It was the first jazz record I ever bought on recommendation from Stereo Review c. 1974.  I still have it, play it often, and get something new out of it every time. Ellington's ...
Does USB cable length make a diference?
I have also heard that 1.5 is ideal, and even that anything shorter might not be as good.  However, at one time I was playing Tidal from my computer to my main system's DAC and that required a 3 meter run.  So, I bought a modestly priced 3m AQ Cin...
Friends hi-fi system not very good, what do you do or say?

Friends hi-fi system not very good, what do you do or say?
A friend has asked me for advice and I am perfectly willing to give it. However, I soon learned that he had made some decisions that aren't open for discussion.  His system is based on an Onkyo int. amp. and CD player, entry level phono player w/b...
The Rapid Rise (& Fall) of the CD
Just about the same time I was considering buying a CD player in 1985 my wife gave me the best Christmas present EVER! A Rega Planar 2 TT with a Linn K-9 cart.  It was a complete surprise to me. A dealer in a local hi-fi shop suggested it.  The Re...
Quick question for the Cables Don't Make a Difference Crowd.
If I'm happy, why shouldn't you be?  And vice versa.  I have done a lot of AB comparisons with a group and we were all convinced that better (yes pricier) cables made a positive difference in the two dealer systems we listened to.  No, not blind t...
