Your sub experience: Easy or hard?
Mine was relatively easy. The sub was lined with foam, but was still a tad forward sounding, so I added a small amount of polyester batting. You should set the crossover point as low as you feel your main speakers can cover. Mine ended up at 80Hz.... 
You know you have audiophile system when...
My definition of an audiophile system is that it sounds exactly like live music. I set up my new system with my new audiophile speakers, synced the subwoofer so it blended in perfectly, got speaker position perfect and everything sounded terrific....

The center channel speaker carries the dialog. Movies are largely dialog. It's the most important speaker in the system. Just because it's possible to do without one doesn't mean it's a good idea. Whoever recommended that you get an amp and preamp... 
Most impressive small footprint speaker
A/D/S/ Sat7. Three way, 7" woofer, dome mid and tweeter. I've heard other speakers as good, but none as good from the same size. (17" H x 9" W x 11" D).
