Infinity F.E.T. preamp
I remember that preamp well. We had one at the stereo shop in L.A. where I worked in the late 70s. As I recall it sounded significantly better than anything else we had at the time.
Looking for a tube preamp that has xlr outputs.
A number of preamps have XLR outputs but are not truly balanced, if that’s important to you. Easy answer for one that is both is a Schiit Freya + (and it’s rarer cousin, the Freya N). Sells new for $899 plus tubes and available used for reasonable...
JBL SA-600
My father owned one in the early 70s, which he used to drive some JBL speakers. I also heard one driving Quad ESLs (57s) at Jonas Miller Sound in Beverley Hills; they considered it one of the few solid state amps that played well with Quads. In my...
Quad Revela 1 & 2
Quad’s box speakers have always been quite good, though not really comparable to the ESLs; I’ve owned 57s for 40 years. I owned a pair of the 12L active speakers with two amplifiers and an electronic crossover in each box, and they were excellent....
Recommendation Tube Integrated
I have not heard them, but on a bang for the buck scale, the Black Ice integrates have always intrigued me. And they have a 45-day return policy, so you’d have plenty of time for the tubes to burn in, and decide if they’re your jam.
Recommendation Tube Integrated
The Quicksilver Integrated is only rated at 20 watts per channel, but with four EL84s per side, and big bespoke transformers, it’s going to sound like a lot more than that. Plus the EL84 is one great tube and it only costs $2,500, made entirely by...
Lumin Hifi Rose or Aurender
I've loved my U2 mini except for the app, which I found awkward to use with Qobuz. I posted about that in a Lumin forum on another site and Peter responded within minutes that I ought to try JPlay. I did and it's great. Really wonderful when a com...
Amp Repair
Scott has been repairing my tube stuff for years, and recently worked on my Music Reference Rm200 MK2. If you want the best tech in the business, he’s well worth the wait.
Speakers to hang on to for LIFE
Quad 57 ESLFirst heard these when I was 17, back in 1971 or so. I've owned a pair built about then since 1986, rebuilt a couple of years ago by Wayne Piquet. Don't go very deep, don't play very loud, but wonderfully transparent and holographic. I ...
