I need to be wowed
You should try to listen to some Dynaudios before you make a decision. I have listened extensively in a friend's home to Dynaudio Contour 1.8, which new would be substantially above your price range, also the Audience line which costs less (and lo...
Cable "burning": Real or VooDoo ???
Steve: I grant your point that heat in your example appears unlikely to make much difference. My point was in response to somebody previously who said electrons sloshing through a wire make no change to the wire. Heat cycling is just one example o...
Cable "burning": Real or VooDoo ???
Yes, sloshing electrons through a cable changes it: the cable heats up. Temperature changes mean physical changes. Physical changes can change electrical characteristics--work hardening is an example.
Speaker wire is it science or psychology
Thanks for the kind words. I must confess something though--I just re-read Steve's original post and he asked about "exotic speaker wires." My comparisons were with interconnects; I haven't tested fancy speaker wires yet, although I am confident t...
Speaker wire is it science or psychology
I just read this whole thread (whew) and have one possibly original observation to share: there seems to be some suggestion in the original posting and subsequent discussion that "psychological"="sensory"="not verified with electronic measuring eq...
Solid state power amps.; on or off?
I bought my 1977 Marantz 140 power amp (75wpc) new; about 10 years ago the right channel started cutting out in scratchy fashion about 30 minutes after power-up, mostly noticeable only when listening at low volume, for maybe another 30 minutes or ...
absolute best component you ever owned
My Electrovoice Sentry II studio monitors. Sadly rotated out of service because they were Too Big. Other speakers reproduce her voice very impressively, but you gotta understand, the singer is really inside these speakers--singing through the gril...
Horrific Confession and Question
I think Constantin is on to something with his suggestion of parametric equalizers--does anybody remember the Fletcher-Munson loudness curves? The "Loudness" button that used to be standard equipment, which boosted bass and treble at low volumes t...
B&W cdm7nt experiences
Thanks for the information and reassurance. The 100 hour ballpark is useful to know. I must be patient:) After maybe 12 hours, I noticed a discrete change in the sound, for the better, and am hopeful that marks a trend. Reducing toe-in, to about z...
Greatest Guitar Band
These aren't guitar armies, but I'll submit them for your consideration anyway. Neil Young's guitar albums are my favorites: Reactor (late 70's), is a howling distortion epic. Rust Never Sleeps. Mirror Ball. I love the sound of overdriven tubes. A...
Shelf Material
Thanks all for an interesting thread. There is a product for telescopes that might have an application here at a relatively simple level. Celestron Vibration Suppression Pads are designed to slip under tripod feet--picture a concave hockey puck co...
Dynaudio Gemini vs. Audience 60 or 70?
Thanks RV for your thoughtful comments. After spending another hour or so with my friend's Dynaudios, I have ruled them out. Their high end and midrange are breathtaking, the low bass thumps the house's foundation, but low midrange-mid bass someho...
Marantz 2500 Volume Control - Help!
I had the same symptom, and it turned out to be in my Power Amp (Marantz 140, ca. 1977). Yup, at low volumes, after the system ran for maybe 30 minutes, the right channel would start to drop out; working the preamp's volume control would put it ri...
Best female vocals on CD
Siddh, check out kd's "Absolute Torch and Twang", the production is not so heavy and the songs range from fun to moving. Wotta voice! She swoops, but with pipes like that she is allowed to. First cut on "All You Can Eat" is good to test the system...
Ear Candy: Most startling recordings.
These aren't necessarily startling, but they are cute... 1. Pink Floyd "Atom Heart Mother" (Quadraphonic!) has a water drip, drip, drip,... that repeats forever at the end of Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast until your tonearm picks up--if your tonear...
