Phono cable for Michell Orbe TT I'm using an Audioquest, which is just fine. I once tried an MIT MH 750 shotgun, and it sounded awful. You've got a great table (I have an Orbe with an SME IV.VI and a Spectral cartridge).
SACD dealers in Chicago Audio Consultants in Evanston has a good setup with a Michell Orbe, SME V arm and Benz cartridge, playing through Levinson electronics. They change the speakers from time to time--lately they've been using the Eggleston Andras.
SACD player as CD transport? I recently purchased a Sony 9000. I use my surround processor (Theta Casa Nova) as a d/a, as it is 24/96 capable and sounds every bit as good (if not better) than the Forsell I replaced. By running the digital output of the 9000 through the Theta,...
CD recorders, which one?? I have had an HHB CDR800 for about 15 months now, and have probably burned over 300 disks with it. I use it with an Apogee Rosetta A/D. The HHB by itself is excellent; with the Apogee, it is as good as 16-bit digital gets.
Best A-D converter I use an Apogee Rosetta 48, connected (via AES/EBU cable) to an HHB CDR 800 CD recorder. My source is 15 ips analog master tapes. If you heard these disks, the analog vs digital debate would be ended. These disks are essentially indistinguishable ...
Best Preamp under 10K Without question, the Levinson380S.
The best sounding FM Tuner is..... If you can find one, definitely a Tandberg 3011 or 3011A. If you do get a Tandberg, however, have the preset switches replaced--they die after about 15 years. Once you've replaced them, and had the unit aligned, you won't believe how musical it is.
Best DVD as transport If you collect CDR's, don't plan on using any transport other than the top-of-the-line Sony (which uses dual lasers). Standard DVD transports can't read them.
Best solid-state amp made anywhere Without question, the Levinson 33H. As for the people who voted for the Goldmund Mimesis 29.4, I hope yours haven't blown up. I owned a Mimesis 9.5++, and a Mimesis 29, during a one year period. Each of them failed twice. After four shipments back...
Best brand CDR/CDRW! If you want CDRW capability, then go with the HHB CDR 850. If that is not important to you, go with the HHB CDR 800. The 800 is an older unit, but it uses the Pioneer stable platter mechanism.
Otari tape recorders There is a magazine (also available online) called Pro Audio Marketplace, which contains nothing but classified ads for professional equipment. There are also some used equipment dealers which specialize in recorders. Talk to Audio Village in Palm...
building a room from the ground up... I built a house five years ago with a dedicated media room. I used five dedicated 20A circuits for power. All walls were double-thick drywall with insulation bats between the joists. Floor was double-thick plywood, covered by wood flooring. The ke...
Spectral digital components A partner of mine has the SDR2000 and 3000. They are absolutely first class.
Pass Labs X-600 Vs. Levinson 33Hs It really depends on what kind of speakers you are using. I am using B & W 800's. For these speakers, my dealer told me that the Pass amps would not be as good as the 33H, so I have the 33H. Notwithstanding the quoted difference in power betwe... |
