Best multi-channel pre-amp for music under $1000?
$2,200 seems to be the going price for a MAP-1 from McCormack. Though it has many limitations, its beautiful sound lies in the fact that it does not have a bunch of extra crap to muck up the sound. No digital inputs, no video switching, no decoder...
CD Players Getting Better?
Sorry, I beg to differ with Seandtaylor. The newest 24 bit chip sets, as well as the newest upsampling decoders are light years above the older ones. While the power supplies and analogue output stages are also critical, there have been no major a...
Anybody heard the McCormack UDP-1?
Correct you are! That pairing was indeed very good. Sadly, my Krell amps don't care much for ARC preamps. According to a well known designer of high end audio stuff, it is related to the VERY high output voltage that is part of the design of the L...
7K for preamp,HT processor, source
If you are hyper-critical about listening to red book CD, whether in strict 2 channel, or played in DPLII/Logic7, or in the case of the MAP-1, the ARM mode, you really MUST listen to the McCormack pair.I have had the Krell in my home, as well as t...
7K for preamp,HT processor, source
Technically speaking, McCormack does not make an HT processor, only a multi-channel, analogue preamp. All processing must be handled by the onboard chips in the player that is connected to it. Regards.
hi-end universal players?
The UDP-1 does red book CD as well as anything I have heard, and that is why I bought it. Paired with the MAP-1, which is also what I have, it really shines. The SACD/DVDA/DVDV options were secondary considerations at the time of purchase, but it ...
hi-end universal players?
Now that I have had time to set up the UDP-1 correctly, the picture to me seems to be VERY good, certainly better than the Toshiba SD 9200 it replaced. I have not yet taken time to run a test disk to check for some of the more objective results, b...
CD Players Getting Better?
Go with a new player! The newer chip sets from Burr Brown are much better than those of 2 years old or older.
Anybody heard the McCormack UDP-1?
I do not recall the Linn model, but it was a Universal player, selling for $3,500. The UPD-1 was better in my opinion. More delicate in the midrange, better in the low octave(s). I did not compare the performance on SACD, or DVD movies. Also, I lis...
hi-end universal players?
MY ears tell me that the UDP-1 is first and foremost, a CD player that happens to be capable of DVDA/SACD. For that reason, I sold my Levinson #36/Sonic Frontiers transport. The UDP-1 blows them away on redbook CD. The fact that is sounds great on...
Underwood Mod to Denon 5900
The UDP -1 from McCormack is the best sounding unit for CD that I have heard. I can not rate it for DVD/DVDA/SACD. Though my ears say it does these formats VERY well, I bought it because CD is still my most played format. For this, it betters my L...
7K for preamp,HT processor, source
I reccomend a listen to the UDP-1/MAP-1 combo from McCormack. At $5,500 for the pair, I am convinced that nothing better is available today, including the Linn stuff, at a much higher price tag. I did not believe it until I heard, and bought the p...
Best multi-channel pre-amp for music under $1000?
I bought the MAP-1. It replaced an Audio Research LS2B. It is quite simply, at $2,500, a steal! And it does not have a bunch of needless electronics inside that can veil the sound of a good stereo source. Additionally, once you hear the MAP-1's AR...
Anybody heard the McCormack UDP-1?
I just bought one. UNBELIEVABLE!! Best CD sound in a universal transport heard to date, including Krell, and Linn. I auditioned this unit beside an Esoteric DV50, and though the DV50 may have been a tick better, it also sells for $2,000 - 2,500 mo...
