ls FM radio even listenable any more?
What timing!  I just bought a Magnum Dynalab tuner (MD-90) and have rediscovered FM broadcast radio!  I listen to classical and rock and have been looking for jazz, but everything sounds gorgeously analogue.  Great way to relax after working all day!
Vincent Audio SV-500 Arriving Today
jay73,So what did you decide?  I just read the responses to your post and kinda cringed.  I have owned a Vincent SP-331 (loved it--great bass!), a Vincent preamp (SA-31 maybe?  quite musical with an Emotiva amp), and an integrated all-tube Vincent...
Tube Preamp with Solid State Amp?
Amen to a SS amp and tube preamp.  To my ears, the reason for a tube preamp is its rounded sound seems more natural and the soundstage is deeper than I have found with all solid state.  As for the power amp, SS amps seem faster to me.  I have also...
My Demo results: I feel like I'm at a frustrating block in my speaker journey
I'm a late poster here, so forgive me if I'm repeating others.  I've found that allowing speakers (and all components for that matter) to break in makes a huge difference.  The difference in speakers is largely in bass, but in some speakers tweete...
Help in putting together my system with used equipment on Audiogon and eBay.
Your post reminds me of my re-entry into hifi about twelve years ago, and I'd hope you wouldn't repeat my mistake: since I lived in a backwater, I read everything and then spent tons experimenting and upgrading and downgrading.  If I had it to do ...
Tube life
I once owned an all-tube phono preamp (Icon) and only gradually noticed its sound no longer seemed up to snuff.  New tubes changed that dramatically.  BTW, the mfg. admitted the tubes were driven hard in that application.  As far as tube changes m...
VPI Uni-Pivit Tone Arms
Wow--I'm so sorry to hear of this poster's experience.  I once owned a Classic 3, and I had zero difficulty with the arm or any other part of the table.  After 3 or 4 years of ownership, it still played perfectly and the point was pin-sharp.  Some...
Ears hurt when listening after changing speakers
I can't suggest a reason, but I had a similar experience with a pair of Golden Ear 2s.  I finally had to give up on them.  I have owned many brands and sizes of speakers and played all volumes and kinds of music, but only the Golden Ears had this ...
Balanced vs RCA between amp/preamp
My home system was dramatically improved by 2 instances of changing to XLR cables: the tube preamp (ARC) to SS amp (McIntosh) connection eliminated noise that was present with unbalanced cables (cables were about 7 feet long) & my Marantz SACD...

Concerto for Violin and Orchestra--Philip Glass
Has anyone added a small subwoofer to 2 channel and been thrilled with the result?
Having gone through 3 or 4 subs that filled out the bass but whose integration with the main speakers always seemed so-so, I finally found the seamless integration I was looking for (with SF floorstanding speakers) through a software-configurable ...
