More Questions about Tube Noise
Hi Fatparrot,Yer darn tootin' that guitarists overdrive tubes to get that fat, rich sound and would not tolerate transistor in that application. But there is a difference between the desirable (from the artist's point of view) sound of a tube bein...
Do step up transformers degrade sound?
And, to get back to Cbird1's original question: step-up transformers, like any device connected to (and I sometimes suspect, placed anywhere near) an audio system, will indeed *change* the sound. Whether you think it improves it, degrades it, or s...
More Questions about Tube Noise
All active devices make noise. By "active" I mean parts like transistors, FETs, MOSFETs, tubes and such things that do amplification. Heck, even resistors, which are purely passive parts make noise as a function of the random electron movement wit...

Can a cheater plug ever damage an amp's pwr supply
Classe knows better than to assume that everyone has three-wire wiring in the house. It's unlikely that the third prong of the AC Mains cord for requied for anything necessary to the functioning of the amplifier . . . though there might be some ki...
Retro Hi End Trivia Question
Nope -- the Switching Class-D amp (or "SWAMP" as it was called in-house)predated the HCA by a couple years. It did fail spontaneously and the reason why was never learned despite considerable research. I think that model had just gone out of produ...
Retro Hi End Trivia Question

a new amp hum problem...checked the archives
If the hum eminates from the chassis and not from the speakers then it's quite likely that the amp has a noisy transformer. You'll want to check with the manufacturer to see about getting an amp with a quiet transformer. There's nothing you can do...
What are your thoughts of the Tower design of amps
I've had a lot of opportunity to listen to my amp new designs in both "flat" (horizontal) and "tower" (vertical) arrangements. The circuitry that I provide in my upgrades for older Counterpoint SA-type amps go into those older horizontal chassis, ...
