Merlins under $3,000?
I run my VSMs with two rythmik subs, because my setup doubles for HT. If you love deep bass I think you would want subs with the Merlins as well. I was able to get my VSM-MME delivered for well under 3,000 about 10 months ago, but you're correct r...
Small monitors for tv/music
On the small side of "small sized monitors" :) the Era D4 come up often used on Agon, and as an active alternative the audioengine A2.
audio switcher
I initially bought the one that monoprice has for real cheap, and not surprisingly it degraded the signal and introduced a lot of interference. I then purchased the Niles AXP-1 and have not had any issues. This is a basic passive switch with no re...

MartinLogan Motion 4 vs Gallo A'Diva
What about Orb speakers? I have a pair and they sound great for what they are. I have not heard the A'Divas but when I was researching I read comments from others where most felt that A'Diva Ti > Orb > A'Diva.
Best budget speakers for near-field/small space
I would also recommend the audioengine A5s. One of the things that sold me on it is its ease of use and flexibility. Sure you're in a dorm now, but later on in life you may use then wirelessly to say place music for your friends when you are hosti...
Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1s VS ACI Sapphire XLs
I do own both currently, and drive them both with solid state so I can't comment on how they sound with tubes. But I will say that I do prefer the Sapphire XLs to the Sierras.
