Good musical speakers that go low? Help

I am looking for a good muscial speaker (4k or so used) that really does good deep base, but in a controled manner.

I have a fairly powerful SS amp (kraft) so current should not be an issue.

Oh and to make things even more difficult I have a wife which means the speaker can not bee over 50 inches or so. No super towers here.

Must a go with a sub?

I would check out Legacy Audio's Focus or Focus 20/20's. I've had 2 pair - lots of tight bass, very musical and even the "S mag" likes them! They should be in your price range used and they look like fine furniture, so the WAF is quite high.
I recommend auditioning the Tyler Linbrook Signature System speakers... They go for about 3.5-4K used, and has some very nice low bass extension that is quite musical.
