DIY speakers

Not really sure where to post this so taking a shot here. I've research a few highly regarded DIY speakers that would contend with high cost retail speakers.

I've decided I want to go down that path and wanted to see if other members have thought the same.

A speaker model I'm interested in is http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/CNO-4.htm

You purchase the drivers and the kit with everything you need including schematics and cabinet construction info. You get top rated drivers, respectable xover parts, and the option to use whatever material you would like for the cabinet.

The cabinet building is more for the wood worker who has the time, skill set, and tools to build the cabinets. I possess two of these necessities.

I would prefer to do a CAD model and program a large router with set up time and cut all the panels, driver cutouts, port holes, bracing, etc.... at once saving me the time I do not have cut the cabinets with saw.

The cost per unit is reduced if multiple pairs are being made at one time so only one set up cost.

I'm reaching out to members who would be interested in the above speaker of on that same website the Atell 3 and Purifi-6661.

The three models I've listed I'm confident would reach in the 20-25k retail category easily with the quality of the components.

If any members are interested please state and which model.

I went the DIY route and found although I had the ability to make very good sounding speakers, I did not have the ability to make very good looking speakers.

I would check out parts express Solstice MLTL. It is basically a DIY Magico V2 and has spectacular reviews. Or, the GR Research NX Studio kit. That said I have not heard them, but if I was going DIY again these are the kits I would go for.

dmyersmd,

I appreciate your input. Magico's have never been my cup of tea.

I use Solidworks and Illustrator and can easily create a rendering of the speaker anyhow I want it to look before I even begin so that isn't an issue.

Build quality isn't a concern as I cut drivers cutout today with a +/- tolerance of .010". I even made trim rings with 70 series aluminum and must admit it did not look anything like a DIY speaker of woodworkers project.

OP are you really going to build those speakers that way? All kidding aside. Are you? Hypex module, and an active down firing sub driver? I’d rethink not enclosing that sub in a slot. BAD idea the whole floor will become a huge passive radiator completely out of time. Easy to fix before and still look nice.

That type of speaker the kids call jackhammers. Their parents get pissed because the china falls out of the china cabinets.. LOL. THEN we add a butt plate and decouple the subs.. LOL

Last, fixed ports? and no way to mechanically adjust the (Q)uality of the drivers to the room, amp and cable? Passive radiators are a lot better and on the fly adjustable if you set them up that way..

Enjoy. .010 OK you got me.. If you want to really get fancy @Corian is a great baffle choice

Ok NOW your close to 25K. Let Danny at GR work the XO.

Rythmik plates with servo too.. Not Hypex plates..

Have fun..
