Elac Debut Reference


They were to be available in November and here it's December. Are they just a sick prank to get the feel for the interest in them? I know they've been set up at shows. No word from Elac as to what their problem is.

The speakers present in such a well balanced, even handed way, they match really well with the newer Yamaha amps that have the same, natural, neutral, open tone with no overemphasis in any frequency band. When u turn up the volume u just get more presence, more openness, they seem to just ‘get out of the way’.  
If your recoding is say ‘audiophile’ grade, say a nice Dianna Krall recording, you get a sumptuous, tasty treat, that draws u in.  If it’s some not as well recorded, but great sung, well written, nicely played swinging music u picked up on a ski road trip & seeing the band live in the local saloon, the music brings u right back to why u bought the thing in the first place,  Fun!  Like a King Cardinal cd I played thru a half dozen times a few nites ago.  
The tweeter has a nice wide dispersion, the right amount of ‘bite & extension’, never harsh and importantly is at the perfect height for a seated listener.  They seem very responsive to cables and upstream digital/analog feeds. I wish I had a couple subs around here, they don’t try to ‘do to much’ so there don’t seem to be any room interaction problems, no bloat or overhang, just speed and resolution. This is a 3 way that crosses over at 90k & 2200k, so the bass that is available from the two 5.25 lower drivers is fast and taught, if not quite as substantial as a couple of 8” or such, yet the whole seems woven more of a single cloth, voiced as a whole.  The top mid, being the same driver as the two lower units u really don’t hear any ‘handoff’, nor any port noise...
I just ordered a pair of the ELAC DBR-62 in black with the walnut from Audio Advice, a pair of Polk LSiM703 in Mt. Vernon Cherry from Adorama, and a pair of the Triangle Borea BR03 in black ash(also from Adorama but they're on backorder). Whichever speakers sound the best in my listening room and on my gear are the ones that I'll keep.

3 very different approaches to speaker design on those, but all are speakers I'm considering for my secondary system. The Polks seem to be a lot of bang for the buck at their current discount. But speaker technology has changed a lot in the last few years, so it's possible a "budget" speaker will easily sound better. But can't come close to the Polk's fit & finish. I'll be interested in your take on all of them. I imagine the size of your room will come into play with these.
I'd like to listen to the polks, my biggest concern would be that ring tweeter. Elac seems to be on a roll, and might be better for my purposes in a more multi-tasking environment (no sweet spot). I've really not heard a Jones design that disagreed with me. The Triangles are a wild card.

Ok let me give this a bump.  Something unique, I believe, about the small Reference floorstanders, is that each box has three port, two circular, in back, and the floor slot n front.  After listening to these, and finding them helpful in fine tuning my system, I wondered why?  After all, they’re relatively inexpensive.  I’ve other speakers, classic ADS 880’s, stand mounts ProAc 1sc, Kef ls50s, another pr. small floorstanders, Castle Conway III’s, and Daedalus DA-1s.  The boxes look very nice but r built to a price point.  The driver’s are nice carbon fiber units in a 3 way config, the tweeter a nice wave guide, the crossover I tried but couldn’t get to, it must be up, mid box.  Yet the things r spacious and neutral in a way some others r not.  I would think, a more expensive speaker, with better boxes, parts, pieces,ect... would be where many would want to end up.  
I suspect, those three ports allow these units to be so neutral in presentation.  A nice value, and well thought out by Mr. Jones...
They sound marvelous with 40wpc tubes or 90wpc ss.  There’s no midbase hump, but if your pre has tone controls, they work as u wold want.  If u have balanced components, they nicely show its benefits.  They show cable differences really quite dramatically.  They show the nuance of a good phono pre’s minute adjustments.  I’ve a EAT Petite and a Bob’s Sky SUT, w/VPI Traveler & Dynavector 20x2L.  I’ve settled upon Audio Envy interconnects & use a Benchmarck Dac3 feed by a Yamaha A-S2000 cd, the Benchmark balanced out into a Yamaha A-S2000, pre outs to a Mystere PA-11 with some nice new old stock 6sn7/el34’s.
