RE: Grilles, my ears could not detect any advantage/disadvantage. I think the Metallic grill is quite attractive and compliments Models CS 2.4 to CS 3.7 speakers. Jim must have had his reasons for this design.
My question;
How far back does the Metallic Grill go in the Thiel Audio catalog?

The CS 2.4 / 2.4SE has a recess section built into the baffle for Grill to fit flush.
Magnets hold the Grill in place perfectly. Your aural descriptors are fine. I will add that One does not have to work to enjoy presentation and sound from Speakers.

Thank You for the detective work in reference to the "Teardrop Cone" design. Could the image/speaker in question have indeed been a Prototype for CES press conference?
Then the Star-Plane (wavy) cone design rolled out at a later date?

Scratch that- you do not have a message option on your account?
For your consideration- there are (2) pairs of CS5i loudspeakers offered by High Performance Stereo in the Miami FL area. Walnut finish plus Wood crates for shipping. Keep me posted on buying decision.

2nd Note;
there is a dedicated BDA-3 thread over on Audio Circle. Click Circles, then Bryston Limited thread, search for BDA-3 heading. Moderated by James Tanner of Bryston fame and very informative. This DAC won DAC-of-the-Year 2022.

Good to see you today. Until Tom addresses your query, the Oppo/Bryston DAC (BDA3) is the most popular combination that I see across other Audio forums.
Audiophiles really like this pairing of excellent brands. SACD, is great for multi-channel as well as 2-Channel musical enjoyment.

Thank You for sharing Bill's impressions and thoughts on the Oppo 105 Player.
A very interesting build and upgrade over stock. There is something to be said for "modding" a CD/SACD player even in 2023.
Upon release, the Sony S9000ES player was Reference quality in a $1500 package. I remember hearing this player in the late 1990's just prior to the
State of the Art SCD-1. Back then Sony / Sony ES over-built their gear with great Pride. You are fortunate to have owned both machines.

My pleasure. Good to read that everything is going well for you. The Panel will be interested to learn of the Benchmark DAC3 / Oppo combination. A Bryston BDA3 may have stiff competition soon. We have plenty of Benchmark and Bryston fans/owners here. I love a fruitful shoot-out.

AYRE and Thiel are sonic matches. At least 2 Panel members here enjoy the AX-5 Twenty Amp with CS 2.4/SE loudspeakers. There are quite a few fans and owners of the 3.6, stay tuned until those guys chime in to address your query.

Welcome! Good to see you today. Always great to meet another fan and owner of CS 2.4 loudspeakers. Thank you for the kind words, and citing your Serial Numbers. Excellent! Low numbered speakers. Equally, great to read about DIY capabilities , in part to Rob at CSS. The SE version is very special indeed.
Over time, your Ears will be reward. I look forward in reading more about Musical tastes and System.

My pleasure to be of service. Where are you located?
No, my SE are stock. I would not mind finding a donor pair for Tom’s upgrade path.
The stock CS2.4 is a real Honey. Curiously, I had to have a taste of the SE.
Once heard, there was no retreat! I was very fortunate to have heard pair 50/51. I was fully prepared to purchase those at full Retail, but the owner did not want to sell. I tried.

The Red Stain Birds Eye maple finish is stunning! Just gorgeous and totally matched the “personality “ of the SE. The speaker is quite attractive perched on Outriggers. I am proud to own such a Loudspeaker.

Welcome! Good to see you today. Thank you for citing your System.
Now, to address your query. Are you considering keeping your system on the Vintage side? If so, I found Adcom and Bryston 3B ST quite capable. Bryston really shines with an ARC Ref5 SE pre-amp. You already have Straight Wire to round out this sweet combination.
The Panel has a few CS 2.2 fans and owners, stay tuned until those guys chimes in to address your query. I look forward in reading more about Musical tastes.

Good to see you again. I hope that you are well and had a prosperous 2023.
While I cannot attest to stock AYRE components, I can and will attest to the Twenty Series being up to the task of driving Thiel loudspeakers. This fact has been confirmed by many Audiophiles. Is AYRE a Krell or Levinson? No. Can this brand hold its own? Yes.
Equally impressive that you matched an AYRE AX-7 with CS 1.6 speakers. Stepping up to an Ax-5 (20) with CS 2.4 is a sweet upgrade all-around.
Reading back from the beginning, my 1st CS 2.4 demo featured a Creek integrated in the 60-80w neighborhood. That Amp rocked, without the slightest hint of clipping.!
Older Krell and Mark Levinson (particularly the 383 integrated) are sonic matches indeed. Those amps can provide >100 dB peaks for Classical music buffs. Great discussion.
Season's Greetings and Happy Listening!

No doubt that a pair of 3.5 or 3.6 speakers could benefit from a Krell, Levinson, Pass Labs or Threshold amp. Much will depend on musical tastes and room parameters/volume levels.

Back in the day, Adcom's ACE products lead the way for Line/Power conditioners of today. P.S.Audio and Stromtank products clean up the power and do so very well. Much depends on the Audiophile's locale/residence.
