Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

Keep me posted & Happy Listening!

Yes, for the consumers in Chicagoland,  let us hope that F1 Audio makes a go of it.

Good to see you here as always. Hope that your are well and bunkered down for the cold draft this weekend (it even makes way to the deep South). I can attest to the notable Bass reproduction from CS 2.4 loudspeakers, rich and textured in presentation.

Thank You for the update from HotRod garage.  Our 3.5 owners will be very pleased with any upgrades. Stay warm out there.

Thank You for the kind words and recognition. I suspect like every Soul here, the enjoyment of hearing music on a better than mid-fi system is where my interest and passion resides. I lived with said mid-fi set up from 1988 to 2002. This was not a negative disposition for it left the door open to  consideration of higher fidelity. I was very fortunate to lived in close proximity to New Orleans pre- Katrina. One Spring Saturday, I set my compass to visit a gentleman named Jay Valentino whom operated an Audio shop outside of New Orleans. The experience was life changing to report the least, as we spent the afternoon,  auditioning many brands read about in the Audio press (I started my subscriptions to both Stereophile and The Absolute Sound magazines in Fall 1993). Jay was a gracious host and quite knowledgable in the Audio retail realm having cut his teeth working under Circuit City and Campo before venturing out on his own accord. The retail space was acoustically sound, a rare find, in so many brick-and-mortar operations. His talent for creating system synergy was on target.Refreshing. I walked away that day with a clear Path- buying  into entry level high end electronics. I learned to apply readings/teachings  into real-time demo sessions from 2002-2005 when Hurricane Kartrina shut his doors.Jay never really recovered his operation in the aftermath of it all.Later on in the Spring of 2011, I would be struck again by Audio lightning discovering a Thiel CS 2.4 loudspeaker - the  Experience was anything except subtle.

Outstanding!  I really enjoy reading about Thiel Audio history.  Keep the  lessons, movers and shakers,   a' coming.  Lest we must not forget Mr. Rob Gillum holding it down there in Lexington, KY.  The future for us owners is certainly looking bright in 2020 and beyond.

Saturday Audio Exchange is a known Thiel Audio magnet. I am looking forward in reading about your impressions and thoughts on the CS7 loudspeaker. Hope the speakers arrive safe and sound.

Can you tell me the firmware/software revision on your AYRE AX-5 Twenty?  Also, what year did you purchase the Integrated, year of manufacture?  Hope that you are well an enjoying this Fall,  soon to be, holiday season.

All -

there is a request for a drawing/schematic for the Thiel SS2 subwoofer.
Any of you guys have a copy?  Anyone have an extra amp or other critical parts?

Thank You for the S/N confirmation.  Did the prior owner talk anything about "Modding" these loudspeakers?

Thank You for the day of listening to your system. Weather-wise, cool and damp outside, it was the perfect time to enjoy fellowship, music and talking Audio shop.  This was my first audition of PS Audio gear and can honestly report that it is a sonic match for Thiel loudspeakers. Plenty of detail, dynamics and speed via tubes, was appreciated.

2nd Note- while you were pulling vinyl, I did peruse the tweeter in question. At no time during out session did I detect any abnormal frequency response(s) nor degradation in sound quality via DAC, turntable (TT). I venture to report that it is operational from a performance stand. Cosmetically, it could be viewed otherwise. The dent is not overt, in appearance,  to my eyes.

I am considering a demo AX-5/Twenty that has firmware F from 2015.

I wonder about the difference? Is firmware H the most up-to-date?

As above, start with Bill Thalmann.
Keep me posted on the consultation.

Always good to see you here. Thank You for the review on Joseph Audio/Spendor speakers. I concur on your assessment, impression,  of the JA Perspective, having heard this model myself. While it was a pleasant experience, I chose the CS 2.4SE for imaging specificity and precision, as well.

Good to see you again. Thiel speakers are sonic matches for ARC, CJ, PS Audio, VAC and VTL (short-list).  Over on Audio Asylum, owners enjoy Aesthetix, Octave and Rogue Audio w/ Thiel loudspeakers. The Tube camp is well represented.

Thank You for the cable update. Good to read that Acoustic Zen (AZ) was an upgrade over Audioquest (AQ) for your system.  Acoustic Zen, Audioquest, Belden, Blue Jean Cable, Cardas, Dueland, M.I.T., Synergistic Research (SR), Transparent Audio (TA), are all sonic matches for Thiel speakers. Across the various Audio forums, I am sure there are other brands represented as well. At any time, feel free to discuss cabling options, because we all hear differently.

Have you heard Ryan Speakers based in Riverside CA?  Try to catch an audition and post your impressions here.  Similar to a Thiel without being a pure first order filter design.

Welcome!  I believe that there is at least one 7.2 owner here. Stay tuned until a 5i or 7.2 expert addresses your query.  Good to see you.

Looking forward to the report. If you can take a few notes on electronics/gear in Rob's set up? Does he have a sound lab or showroom at CSS? Or, are you guys auditioning at his personal residence?

Safe travels and have fun!

Anytime is the right time for Cabling discussion. Wether you wish to persue the DIY route or aftermarket, there is something for everyone. We have a few members of the Panel who enjoy the DIY aspect offering plenty of information in this thread. Equally, there are other members  of the Panel who enjoy the aftermarket companies. No right or wrong approaches regarding cabling. Take your time, demo all interests and have fun in process! Good to see you here.

Thank You for the field report. Yes, this is a challenging time of year for travel. You are a brave Soul indeed.  Hope the rest of your time is well spent prior to returning home.

Reviewing your original post- the Naim and Mark Levinson are very fine players indeed. Not familiar with the AudioSpace CD8 but find it cool as there are many excellent spinners out there. I too find modern DAC(s) on the clinical side.  If you like the sound from Cullen and Synergistic Research, consider, a full loom (interconnects and speaker cables).

Keep me posted as you find that perfect balance between cabling and gear.

Thank You for reviving the old CS 7.2/Levinson thread. I would be interested in learning if any of those guys still own the 7.2 loudspeaker?

Good to see you again. I, too, share your sentiments w/ the CS 2.4 model.
Pretty cool aspect regarding upgrading via SE Clarity Cap.  Did you incorporate any other change(s) to the cross-over (XO)?
Was this a DIY project? Or, did another speaker tech assist?

You own a great system. Good to read that newer Cardas cabling is a sonic match with PS Audio gear. Historically, Audience and Straight Wire are sonic matches with Thiel loudspeakers as well. I am unfamiliar with newer Audience Forte and Front Row cabling options. A few reviews on each line  are slowly making a presense into the Audio press.
I always advise to trust your own ears regarding cables/power cords. One does not need great spending to achieve great sound. A full loom as well as mixing can yield excellent aural results. Have fun!

I share your sentiments upgrading from a stock CS 2.4 to the CS 2.4SE model. Dave Garretson was one of this thread's early contributors on the benefits from using Clarity Cap OEM parts. Having spent much time w/ the 2.4, 2.4SE, 2.7 and 3.7 loudspeakers, soundstage is not a problem.

2nd Note;

I would like to hear a pair of CS 2.2 and CS 2.3 models for comparison to the CS 2.4 loudspeaker.  Happy Listening!

Excellent! Perhaps one of our 3.5 owners will pick up these tweeters as a back-up pair.

Good to see you again. Can you describe effects heard when polarity is switched? VTL is a sonic match for Thiel loudspeakers.

I know those cables that are colored in burgandy. Not sure if the model is AQ4 or AQ8 ? Perhaps a Google images search might reveal the exact wire.

Thank You for your observations on the CS 2.3 vs. CS 2.4 loudspeakers. Very informative to owners of these (2) models. Tom is working diligently on the CS 2.2 for now. Perhaps upgrade(s) are in the CS 2.3's future?
