Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

Keep me posted & Happy Listening!

gasman117Thank You for the update. It is good to read another PS Audio customer here. ronkent was out first endorser of this brand and loves his system's synergy. Which cables/power cords are you using currently?

Thank you for the update and photos!  Did you notice any difference from 7 feet to 8feet 11 inches?  Sitting 12 inches from the CS 2.4 is optimal distance.  Keep experimenting and measuring via DSP software.
You really have an elegant room.

My pleasure.

Wonderful! to read about your scoring a pair of CS 2.4 loudspeakers.
Experiment with speaker placement as you certainly have the dimensions for best outcome. When imaging is off center try placing the speakers closer to each other, a measure farther from back/side walls or sitting closer 10-12 feet.  Keep us posted as you dial-in these speakers into your system.

What other gear including cabling rounds out your current set-up?

Thank You for more Thiel Audio history and the cast which made them a force in the loudspeaker world. I have much respect for you guys, movers and shakers, who put this company in the consumer marketplace.
I am glad that Rob decided to remain a major part within our customer service aspect of all things considered. Hopefully, you distinguished gentlemen have an open report with one another moving forward.
Each maintaining your respective trades that contribute to the whole process. I am looking forward to your XO offerings later this year.
Be well.

great lines for questioning for Tom.  Having heard both 2.7 and 3.7 models, I concur with your observations being, the CS 3.7 is a true Flag-ship loudspeaker. Both models are voiced very closely to the other, the 3.7, requires a larger room/space and a bit more high current/power to really open its capabilities.

Good to see you. Hope you are well and enjoying the music. I am in the process of setting up the Bryston demo 2-3 weeks out due to my vs. the dealer/retailer's conflicting schedule. Stay tuned.

You ears do  not deceive. White Ladder is a well-produced recording by David Gray.  This year the album celebrates a 20th anniversary.Enjoy the Music!

I concur with your assessment of Atlanta regarding dealers/retailers.
I have watched, for many years, Audio shop after shop closing their doors? The few that are operational do a very good job for us consumers.
You are correct in that only a few speaker brands are represented city-wide. I am looking forward in reading about the in-home demo with Paradigm.

Thank You for the follow up. I had a feeling that moving the speakers a margin apart could make a positive difference in presentation and sound within your excellent system.  Thumbs up indeed.

Good to see you again.  I suspect that each of us could measure from a different part of the loudspeaker. Personally, I measure from the front of the base (bottom cabinet) where the Thiel logo is located.Using this method, I have never had an issue considering our beloved speakers offer pin-point imaging.  Keep us posted as you test your own preference.

Welcome! the party here never ends.  Good to read that we have another CS5i owner. Tom offers excellent advice on this speaker's proper placement. What other gear including cabling is in your system?
I look forward in reading more about you and your Audio journey.

Welcome! it is good to see you here. I know that you have been reading this thread and will continue to enjoy the plethora, wealth, of information therein. The Panel is here to assist and help you along on your Audio journey. From my end, it is a pleasure to find a budding Audiophile that is interested in our wonderful hobby. You have covered much ground in a very short period of time. Traveling to the various dealers/retailers is key to discovering the brands of gear that peaks interest.  Thank You for jumping in as a contributor.  I look forward in reading more about your musical tastes as we build your next system.

Thank You for citing your system- especially the cables!
Keep us posted as you massage those Thiel speakers into your room/system.  Bryston is a sonic match.

Great to see you in this New Year. I have missed your comments and contributions. Good to read that you are still enjoying the PS Audio/Thiel Audio combination. Those BHK amps are really catching on to Audiophiles across various forums. Agreed, PS Audio Power Plants are highly regarded in the 2-channel and home theater arenas.
As your schedule allows, post some of your fave albums or musical passages/selections, that demonstrate your system's sonic capabilities.

Thank You for citing your serial numbers (S/N).  Good to read that your experimenting with speaker placement is going well. Keep dialing in those CS5i loudspeakers.

Today I had a second audition with AYRE featuring the DX-5 universal player matched to the AX-5 Twenty integrated amp. Only the DX-5 and QX-5 Twenty were changed out- all other gear and cabling remained the same as my first audition. CD and SACD were evaluated as I do not have prior experience with this company's disc spinners.
As always, I begin my session with my long time reference CD Jamie Cullum "Twentysomething". I also end my session with this CD. Comparing selections against the QX-5 Twenty, the DX-5, provided even greater micro detail, subtle and sublime. I have owned this disc since 2004, listened to it hundreds of times (at least) yet there were nuances never heard previously.  Next were my Rock preferences for evaluating systems- Pearl Jam "Ten". Favorite track for such conditions, Oceans.
Listen for the dynamic timpani strikes (clean, clear, musical, sharp contrast). Nirvana "Unplugged- Live in New York" Favorite track, All Apologies. The DX-5 need not apologize for anything here. The cello is perfect and sublime in presentation. I felt a strong sense of Dave Grohl holding back his hard hitting drummer skills for a more delicate approach via Hot Rod Stix in hand. Tracy Chapman "S/T" favorite track, Fast Car.
The beauty of an acoustic guitar was enjoyed without any distortion. The Bass pluck at the end of this song, sublime, not boomy. Natalie Merchant "Tigerlily" favorite track, Carnival. All songs on her debut album are well crafted and recorded. Excellent instrumental separation yet delicate voice and percussion undertones heard. The ending was perfectly clear and cross talk discernable without congestion.
Onto SACD- Alan and myself experienced a hiccup here. He does not own any SACD discs so today was the first time the player had a disc in play. I was able to enjoy (1) disc, Journey greatest hits single-layer (not a hybrid). Kind of Blue single layer, The Police single layer (entire catalog) and Twentysomething would not engage?  The player scrolled the word, unknown, followed by stop in the led display. I did enjoy the Journey disc from start to finish without any glitches. I have always enjoyed the sharp contrast in playing styles from Anysley Dunbar and Steve Smith on songs "Don't stop Believin'" , "Wheel in the Sky". The drums and percussion were very well recorded on these tracks the PRaT is perfect. It is easy to pick up on Smith's jazz drumming undertones built into a Rock structured song.  I must agreed with Beetle regarding the AX-5 Twenty, musical, is the correct descriptor. Extremely musical is a better descriptor.
This duo is neutral with a touch of warmth. Cold, forward, hot, laid back,
was not appreciated with the DX-5. More to follow on the SACD playback issue.  Happy Listening!

Thank You for the update. I am hoping the Paradigm Persona 9H fares well in your system too. I can tell you that something along upper Magico, Vandersteen or Von Schweikert lines will better a Thiel. Keep us posted on your Audio journey.

Me as well. The DX-5 was in stock (non DSD upgrade) form. The extra musical details were amazing. Speakers- Monitor Audio PL 100 II ( 2-way monitor on stands. $5795).  I am sure hoping that the SACD playback is a minor fix, minor issue. I will reach out to Ayre for a consultation. If only Charles (RIP) were still here.  Happy Listening!

I know exactly how you mean- I could never get into the Revel nor Aerial "sound". I do feel that B&W and Sonus Faber are very fine indeed and did consider each floorstander until I met Thiel Audio.
It is going to take a special speaker to best Thiel.
Good to see you again. Hope you are well , keep us posted as you audition other brand(s).

Hope you are well today and having fun in your hot rod garage/studio.

I have a feeling that the XO upgrade(s) for models 3.5/3.6 is going to become quite successful. These speakers are favorable among many Panel members here.

I share your sentiments with the 2.2, except in my case, it is model CS 2.4. This is a speaker in which one can solely enjoy the music with the most basic of gear set-up.

Tom offers excellent advice as always. Yes, it is possible to damage any driver from a failed XO. More to the point, a power amp clipping is certain to damage any driver.  Good to see you here.

Thank You for another historical perspective on Thiel Audio. I really enjoy reading these accounts, posts. I do the same when asked about other brands to consider (Vandersteen). Happy Listening!

nice score on the BP-17. When did your purchase this pre-amp?

Happy Listening!

james63

your memory is on target. The CS 3.7 will play louder as it is a larger, heavier,  loudspeaker that can easily handle an extra 100 watts compared to the CS 2.4 / 2.4SE models. The CS 3.7 requires a little more current as well in order to fill larger space correctly.
It does feature the same house sound or tonal balance that we all love so well. One can count on an appropriate, wider soundstage. The 2.4 / 2.4SE will not fill the same larger room as a 3.7 model.

Happy Listening!

Very nice upgrade as the BP-26 is a real workhorse for Bryston. In fact, the BP-26 has a lower noise floor especially for Vinyl lovers. More to follow.  Happy Listening!

Tom raised an excellent point on the smaller driver weighing less, moving less air and being more nimble. During my comparison(s) between the 2.4SE, 2.7 and 3.7 models, delicacy, is the precise conclusion I reached (without knowing these masterful details). To my ears delicacy, micro dynamics and subtleties,  are inter-changeable. Sublime can be substituted as well.  Happy Listening!

No doubt that you guys will improve the sonic signature, widen the sonic gap with your respective XO upgrades. I look forward to hearing each final configuration from both of you.  Thank You for tackling this wonderful opportunity head-on.  Happy Listening!

very interesting developments circa 1979/1980. Good to learn that more people are entering into the equation for you DIY guys. There are a few 3.5 owners here that would like to see/hear an improved XO in addition to the ones already staged. Keep up the outstanding work and have fun!

Happy Listening!

Yes. I found the CS 2.4SE to have superior microdynamics compared to the 2.4, 2.7 and 3.7 as outlined above. This discovery during my sessions was not a day v. night enlightenment. My ears favored the SE by a very close margin. Happy Listening!

Welcome! Nice score on the 1.2 and 3.5 models. The 3.5 is a real favorite here among owners. I look forward in reading more about you and your musical tastes.  Happy Listening!

Thank You for the A3 follow up. There are audiophiles who enjoy the dark and/or rolled  treble sound to be sure. Besides the Constellation integrated, what other gear including cabling was in this system?

I look forward in reading about your next Audio journey entry.

Thank You for sharing your 3.5 story. Which loudspeaker replaced Thiel in your system? Happy Listening!

Much Thanks! for citing a portion of your Audio journey. It has been said many times that a Thiel speaker is an Apogee or Magnepan with Bass.A long time ago I wanted an Apogee Slant 8 model. It was heavily criticized for not having enough Bass output. The ribbon/stat midrange, tweeter panels sounded beautiful to my ears. I could not get into the sound of a Maggie nor Martin Logan though.  Happy Listening!
