Anybody know what is going at Coherent Source (Rob Gillum )? I purchased some spare drivers for my 3.6s until last year, now he's not responding to any of my emails.Someone know whether his business is still on?

Talking about 3.6's tweeter, recently I had a look to the ferro fluid status because it seems to my to hear a bit reduced high frequencies level (xover checked, all ok) and found not dried up and with a normal consistency, very fluid. What in your opinion can be the cause? Perhaps the stiffening of the dome rubber suspension after many years? They were made in 1998, dont know how long they can last delivering nominal performance. |
Tom, thank you so much for your reassuring words about Rob and his business.I was a bit surprised for his silence, actually I always found Rob to be very kind and responsive during our emails exchange before my last spare drivers purchase and giving a lot of suggestions about how to check the drivers and xover conditions, thus now i was wondering whether something news was in the air. No problem, I can wait, but guess that the drivers availability for the 3.6s start to be critics, especially for the tweeters and my idea is to purchase two more of them to stay relaxed for some years to come. |
Tom, thanks again for your valuable hints. I can extend the sweep up to 24K that's the limit in REW signals generator, I will do it as for your suggestion. I'll take the measurements separately L and R channel in order to compare the result, maybe the issue I think to have is only in my head....hopefully! |
Recently I started to experiment with pro amps, my reference is a wonderful McCormack DNA-2 and one of my set of speakers are Thiel 3.6, I got the opportunity to buy for good price a Crown I-Tech 9000HD and the result is something difficult to explain in words, it's crazy powerful (1500W for channel), made for pro use, normally no considered for home listening among audiophiles, snubbed and not worthy. I simply say, try it if you can, without preconceptions, then come back here to report your opinion. It manage the bastard low load of 3.6 as no other, cost no object, no trace of harshness in mid-high region, bass impact is unbeliveable with a great soundstage. Could no belive to such level of performance if I was only told about. Price is no cheap, around 8000$ new, but worth to give it a try before to go to conclusion. I will not get rid of my McCormack but the progress in technology is there for a good reason. |
@thieliste thank you for your opinion and experience on Gaia feet. A question, do you have hard floor type or carpet under your 3.7s ? My set of Gaia has arrived and now I'm curious to test them, meanwhile have also sourced a set of spikes that were not included with the speakers I purchased. So, it's time to make some comparison and decide what I like better. |
pablohoneythank you!... yeah! It will be really the longest weeks after the marriage 😂, can’t wait to compare them to 3.6’s in my system, in my room, actually never listened to 7.2 but in someway I know that it will be not a jump in the dark, have big expectations from this old but piece of state of art from our missed genius. Also curious to see how my two main amplifiers perform with them, the McCormack DNA-2 and the Crown I-Tech9000HD (...do not laugh, it’s a serious pro amplifier that I witness to put to shame many blasoned high end tanks) |
pablohoneyYou deserve my best congrats on your beautiful job, your Birdseye Maple looks amazing, well done, really well done👏 |
Hi all fellow Thiel enthusiasts, |
jafant Yes, I know, this place is a gold mine for every serious Thiel's lover. I'm proud to enlarge my Thiel collection, even because my dedicate listening room is now finally under construction. It is a stand alone construction in my house area but enough far from it to let me to crank up the volume anytime if I wish. Living in countryside has pros and cons..... |
tomthielactually can't wait to fire up these new babies, big expectations, I'll report here my impression compared to my 3.6's.....until my wife will fire me😅 At the end I consider music as huge part of my life and she knows, to be honest she respect my hobby and never complain me😁 |
The 7.2’s have finally arrived at home! Really impressive great looking, Morado finish, perfectly maintained, no a single dent or scratch, beautiful! The sound is beyond my expectations given my current listening room. I have tried some amplifiers to drive them, my loved McCormack DNA-2, wich is my long time reference, very good result , no dubt, and my recent discover, a real pro amplifier, the Crown I-Tech 9000HD, (1500Wrms/ch at 8 ohm, 3000Wrms/ch at 4 ohm and 2500Wrms/ch at 2 ohm)....do not laugh about this before you listen to it, it’s a I class amplifier (similar to D but with improved efficiency, patented by Crown) that push the bass depth, speed and dynamic beyond your imagination but without harshness or lack of refinement in mid high region. After a big delay for many reasons, finally I started since few days to realize a dedicated large room wich will be ready hopefully within the end of year to let my systems to sound at their best, a relaxing and comfortable room separated from my house in Tuscany countryside. It’s a pity that I could spent only two days with them, due to my job I had to leave to Indonesia for two weeks, anyway my short so far listening session has been enough to state that these artwork are definitely a decent step up above my 3,6’s. Can’t wait to get home back to enjoy again such fantastic sound experience! |
