Tekton Double Impacts

Anybody out there heard these??

I have dedicated audio room 14.5x20.5x9 ft.  Currently have Marantz Reference CD/Intergrated paired to Magnepan 1.7's with REL T-7 subs.  For the vast majority of music I love this system.  The only nit pick is that it is lacking/limited in covering say below 35 hz or so.  For the first time actually buzzed the panel with an organ sacd. Bummer.  Thought of upgrading subs to rythmicks but then I will need to high pass the 1.7's.  Really don't want to deal with that approach.

Enter the Double Impacts.  Many interesting things here.  Would certainly have a different set of strengths here.  Dynamics, claimed bottom octave coverage in one package, suspect a good match to current electronics.

I've read all the threads here so we do not need to rehash that.  Just wondering if others out there have FIRST HAND experience with these or other Tekton speakers

Thanks.

@mazikrav:  Thanks for your response. I did consider the Brilliance but since it was Terry London's review on the Double Impacts that made me reach out to Eric, that is what I went with.

Please post more on the Brilliance! Would love to hear how they are working out for you.

I'm planning a trip to Eric's magic works later this summer or early fall. To hear a number of his models first hand.
@mazikrav: Sure, I'd love to meet up when I make it to Orem to audition Eric's creations.
Since you ask: this is some of what the DIs have been 'channeling' in my system (and is a very random sample of who and what I've been listening to the last few days):

Female artists (mainly for gear break in): Melody Gardot, Jessie Ware, Cassandra Wilson, Patricia Barber, Neko Case, Sarah Jarosz, Cecile McLorin Salvant....

Male artists: Andy Bey, Eric Bibb, Jose Gonzalez, Bon Iver, Elliott Smith, Rodney Crowell, Terry Callier, Garland Jeffreys, Caetano Veloso....

World: Niyaz, Anoushka Shankar, Trilok Gurtu, Toure-Raichel Collective, Sarathy Korwar, Anouar Brahem, Otros Aires, Shye Ben Tzur/Johnny Greenwood (on Junun).....

Strings: Arnaud Garcia-Fons, Mischa Maisky, Laurence Juber, Thierry Robin, Gary Karr.....Piano/'Percussion': Brad Mehldau, The Bad Plus, Vijay Iyer....Electronic: My Morning Jacket, Greyboy, Moby, Tiesto, Nightmares on Wax, James Blake, Jade Warrior.....Other: Brooklyn Rider
Kenny, no worries.... How could I ever ignore Ms. Eva! The 'Live at Blues Alley’ is one of my favorites...I just don’t play her when gear is ’burning-in’ since she always sounds bright on my system(s). Once she sounds good, I know the system is stable. Tall Trees in Georgia is a reference track for me. Good life lesson as well. :)
@lancelock: I played "Blues in the Night’ as a test, and I see what you mean!!!

@kdude66: As I mentioned earlier, Eva has been a test vocalist for me for a long time ---- she certainly lets me know when my system is or isn’t ’bright.’ Right now I have a preamp and a power supply with Furutech NCF Rhodium breaking in...so bright it is...and is the reason I’m not spinning Ms. Eva. : )

@mac48025: I added Hope Waits to my Roon Library sometime ago based on a previous recommendation from you. She is tooooo sexy sounding for good behavior! I will look up Imelda - hopefully less troublesome. : ) Glad you are enjoying Eva.

@jcarpo: I will also look up Lila Downs. Eva sounds great on good ribbon implementations also.

@mazikrav: We are on!
@teajay : Terry, any updates on your ongoing adventures with the Double Impacts and components in the chain driving them? Thanks.
Kenny: Sounds very promising! Looking forward to your impressions with the MZ2 driving the DIs direct as well as with your Yamamoto amp.

@333jeffery:  That's awesome! Congratulations! You may be the first in an amazing speaker launch as @mac4805 was for the Double Impacts.

Really looking forward to your impressions of the Ulfberths and hopefully also comparative points with respect to the Double Impacts.

Have to say that these are fun times. First the Double Impacts, then the Linear Tube Audio pairing, and now the Ulfberths and Brilliance. Good times, indeed.
@333jeffery:  If you are amenable to it, can you post some pics over on your system page? I'm also curious of the scale with respect to the rest of the system. I wish Agon made it possible and easy to post photos within the forums.
@vitop: Terry reviewed the Sigmas and still speaks highly of them. Perhaps he can add something to convince you! :)

I considered them as surrounds for what was supposed to be a HT system, but the DIs were so amazing, all my funds got re-directed to 2ch.
@333jeffery:  Thank you for providing your impressions and experience with the Ulfberths in your room and system. That is very helpful and I believe valuable to all of us here on this thread...whether we decide to upgrade or not.

Your time with your Dad was a wonderful highlight for me, especially on the eve of Father's Day. I can only imagine the way both of you enjoyed that time together and enjoyed some exceptional musical goodness from your system and the new Ulfberths.
Bullitt you are one lucky dude...you got a 'Yes' from  a woman and not one but two. Celebrate! : )
@vitop: I'm sure @333jeffery will clarify, but I don't believe he means bright.
@333jeffery: When you say 'forward' do you mean closer to the stage? And when you say 'more in your face,' are you describing the same as being 'forward' or something else? Thanks. - David.
@333jeffery: Thank you!!!

 That's what I thought. How close would you say you are to the 'stage' with the Ulfberths?

If I remember correctly, your seating position is about 10 feet from the speakers.
@teajay : Hi Terry. Are you saying that a more forward stage presentation is a 'shortcoming' or was your comment more of a general statement? Thank you.
@lancelock :

I am using Herbie's 'Giant Threaded Stud Gliders' screwed into the Double Impacts and Herbie's 'Giant Fat Gliders' under each 18 by 20 inch isolation platform.

The DIs with Gliders rest upon the isolation platform. The isolation platform with Gliders rest upon an oak hardwood floor.

I went with Herbie's based on others here in this thread recommending them (though I also had previous experience with his footers and tube dampers).

Others within the thread also recommended Soundocity, which I also seriously considered. Star Sound Technology's Sistrum platforms were also highly recommended within the thread (and would have been my first choice, but my goal was mainly to protect the speakers from tipping over should my 3 and a half year old son somehow manage to do so)

The impact on sound quality was immediately apparent, as I'm sure it would be with the other two options mentioned here (as well as those not mentioned above).

Hope this information is helpful. I asked a similar question quite awhile back, if you search you should be able to land on those pages. Everyones input was extremely helpful.

@craigl59: There are comments from various members on this thread around 4/15 4/16 as well as on 4/25 regarding their results with Herbie's sliders and other isolation products they have used with the Double Impacts as well as other components/speakers. There was also some discussion regarding the same, prior to the question I asked, a few pages back from the 4/15 date posts.

Here is my post (lightly edited) from 4/25 with some quick impressions.

------------------------
Herbie's Audio speaker isolation Gliders are in-system now. I went with 8 Giant Threaded Stud Gliders, 1 inch length, screwed in flush with the Double Impact's base. I did not use the nuts since they left a gap between the base and the isolation device.

Man, do they make the speakers easy to move on our hardwood flooring!

I did notice a sonic difference, though I would label it as "one of more,"  a bit more in this case... rather than one of' an order of magnitude' difference.

I wanted to utilize the isolation platforms I've been using for years now. In addition to sonic improvements, they just happen to look really good with the Double Impacts, at least to my eyes, and provide an 'early warning' to my son : )

I also ordered 8 Giant Fat Gliders. Robert Herbelin didn't feel strongly about doubling up, but advised me to experiment. I used Blu-Tack between the Gliders and the isolation platform.

I had one speaker with the Threaded Gliders screwed in (on the floor) and the other with the Glider - Iso Platform - Threaded Gliders. My ears just wanted to listen to one speaker. It was so very clear and easy to pick up.

Again, not an order of magnitude difference. Just more. And a lot more with the doubled up solution. And more rightness / righteousness musically.

Everything has tightened up. Taut is the word I would use, along with greater fullness (body) which seem oppositional as elements. Better separation and depth into the music, more detail and clarity. More fun, more enjoyment.
--------------------

Hope this is helpful.

@craigl59: That's terrific! You are welcome.

@vitop: The Double Impacts come pre-threaded for the included spikes.

@mac48025:  The DIs are elevated by 2.75 inches to their base in my application (probably only marginally higher than spikes, unless they spikes are on carpeting).

I recently came across some comments on one of the general Tekton threads/forums about the need to elevate the speakers in question since the woofer was so close to the floor. I wonder if this is also something that is coming into play?

Congratulations bullitt! Looking forward to hearing more about how the pairing works for you.
@tekton: Very happy that your DIs are working out for you!

@longdrive55  Great to hear that you are considering the DIs or Ulfberths.

@pawsman: Thanks for sharing your impressions on the Impacts. Just to clarify, did you go with the "monitor' portion or is it the full floorstander?
@pawsman: Thanks for your response. I've been wondering when someone would try the "Monitor" version of the Impacts or Double Impacts...It's good to hear that your setup is also working out very well. Keep us posted on your ongoing impressions.
Bullitt, you mean Holy Job, right??? :)

Both the JOB and the Odysseys are solid recommendations by the members who have brought them to your attention.

Srajen Ebaen put JOB on the map early on, though his enthusiasm for them has faded a bit. You may want to look at his reviews also. He talks about them from time to time in his subsequent other product reviews, so that 'fading feeling' is difficult to get at via Google.

@lancelock  Thanks for sharing the photo of your new setup. Very nice. I imagine the Modded 205 with the Benchmark is going to be a great combination to drive the DIs.
@nonoise

Reach out to @pawsman who had a couple of posts regarding the Impact Monitors on 6/26 (I believe a page or two ago).
@milpai    They are. For me its a SST (W4S) Son of Ampzilla Mk 2

Class AB 220W pc into 8ohms 350W pc into 4ohms
@milpai  As you can see, an interesting mix.

Thoughts / concerns, since you asked the question?
Transconductance .... transresistance....

It all goes away with that great uniter, music.

Steve Coleman is making that happen right now. And aptly: 'Invisible Paths'  :)
Bill,

Great to hear that you are having good results with your setup!

I have a Schiit Yggdrasil in my chain also. I'm using a Small Green Computer - Sonore microRendu combination off of an Ethernet switch. Roon / Tidal as the software with multiple devices serving as remote and the SGC as Core. With excellent results, also.

I'm working on getting a bit more out of the Yggy via footers/platforms/weights for isolation, damping, etc.

@charles1dad and @grannyring

Thank you for your perspectives and thoughtful engagement on the topics previously discussed above. Singling both of you out since you don’t own the Double Impacts and yet contribute in such meaningful ways.

@almarg

Thank you for the technical and substance based contributions to this thread. I’m always learning from your posts.

And @ALLOFYOU!!! in the thread...

I’m grateful for all that is shared and discussed, and yes, even from those that offer other alternatives or points of disagreement.

@ron1264 Congrats on getting your Double Impacts and getting them broken in. A suggestion on getting better bass: the traps will certainly help, but you might want to try raising them a couple of inches and using an isolation footer/platform. Both made a major difference for me. I’m still working out room treatment options, but for now old curtains drapped over small stools behind the woofer ports are helping.
@craigl59: Yes, I can see that working. We have had to remove all of the draperies from the new house so I have over 100 pounds of thick silk and cotton fabric that I'm using as damping/absorbing material in the corners, and behind the speaker ports. We have the pics of the curtains out to a vintage shop to see if there is any interest, otherwise I might shred them and use them in slim boxes, in a manner that you suggest. Let me know how you designed / went about your wall panels. Thanks.
That's great, Kenny!

For those of you that like NJ, look up her sister Anoushka Shankar. Different track and evolution as an artist and NJ has collaborated on some of her work.
Traces of You is probably the best bet. There are some Thievery Corporation mixes (TC has some really good stuff, btw) and she does "Lucy in the Sky" with Milos Karadaglic. Otherwise she is all sitar.

Interesting to hear her British accent to NJ's American.
Kicking it off with the first listen of the day and a first listen of "Sugarloaf Mountain: An Appalachian Gathering" by Apollo's Fire Baroque Orchestra. Interesting coincidence as I read Kenny's above post because 'We'll Rant and We'll Roar' is playing...about leaving the Isles for America.
@craigl59: Thank you for your detailed response on your acoustic treatment builds. If I go the diy route, I will reach out to you and Eric for the specifics.
Bill, good for you. I also took a look at the review after Terry mentioned it and eventually found the website. It sounds like a good buy and an easy one to take a chance on. Looking forward to your impressions and experience with it.
@mazikrav It’s really your call. Traction will probably depend on how many Brilliance owners (or those interested in it) are active here on Agon.

But please keep posting here as well, since at present @correlli ’s thread seems to be capturing most of the Tekton related info.
@333jeffery Wonderful. Did you synchronize to the Fourth of July fireworks?
The grills for the DIs were finally delivered yesterday.

I'm with you @mac48025 The grills look very nice and streamlined, but I've become accustomed to the non-grill look...it is also much softer since my DIs are gray. The pure black looks strong in the room.

Wish I didn't have to mount the grills because of the budding and growing 3 and a half year old audio dude. He's been telling me what he likes and doesn't like. Beth Orton, not so much. London Grammar, Yes, though he asked if it was a guy singing (Hannah Reid has a deeper voice). Trilok Gurtu a Lot! Calls it spooky music. Caught him bopping to Bass Drum Bone! Fantastic. :)

I'm going to miss the array.
@whacky

+1 on what Kenny has shared.

I went with Herbie’s Giant Threaded Stud Gliders based on recommendations from folks on the thread. To very good results.

Like Kenny, I also went with a 1-inch length but you can go to the 1.5 inch length if you would like to adjust / tilt the speakers slightly. I am also using two sets of 4 Herbie’s Giant Gliders under isolation shelves; the DIs with the screwed in Gliders rest/stand on top of the isolation shelf with gliders. To my ears, this really brought ’more’ out of the isolation efforts. I also believe raising the DIs a bit off the floor will result in gains. My floors are bare hardwood (oak).

There are other brand approaches to consider as well. Soundocity has products that folks here are also using to good effect. They are also reasonably priced.
