Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?

Hi,

I'd love to hear the impressions of people who've actually spent some time with these speakers to share their sense of their plusses and minuses. Mapman here on Audiogon is a big fan, and has shared lots on them, but I'm wondering who else might be familiar with them.

MDF the love affair....

Way back in the early 80's I had a cabinet shop in Venice, I built anything under the sun
just so I could go racing. But years later I realized that it was a hard job to push sheets of
MDF and hardwood ply through my Powermatic. The dust was part of me, and it sucked as much then as it does today. One day I got an offer from an Audio company and I Said see you later to the dust.
Anyway, as You can see things are getting glued up and clamped with my work out equipment....lol
I thought I would have all the sides glued up by now, but I had some other duties around
the house to take care of first. As I'm getting closer and closer to the point were I have to
lock in the design (and shape) I'm vasilating back and fourth how to do it and where to do it.

I did lock in the passive woofers for sure, and the facets cut in to the cabinets will look killer
me thinks. To do the facets I have to make some simple jigs, nothing complicated, but it has to be very precise or it's going to look like crap.
The images shows a sheet of MDF getting glued up, and a small test piece that I can use for
a test cut.

Until next time.....peace 🇸🇪
Math is fun....

So I woke up this morning and knew that I finally had to make some decisions
regarding the look of the cabinets...Wow
The cabinets are incredibly solid, very heavy and the cabinet walls are on an average
three inches thick (3") so there's a lot of material that can be shaped without even touching
the original cabinet. Thank God for routers and circular saws as it makes my job easy.
As you can see, I managed to cut in some bevels on the bottom and the sides.
The top bevel will be a bit deeper but the bottom will stay pretty much as is. You can also see the pencil marks for 12" passive radiators one on each side of the speaker.....

More to come my friends....🇸🇪
Finally a beer for the weary....

Took Friday of as I didn't feel like getting dusty, and my back needed some rest
as this mother is starting to reach "I can't move it by my self" proportions.
The positive side is I'm getting a good workout on a daily basis.

The plan was to finish most of the facets on the edges of the cabinet
and I manage to reach the goal. The process sound simple, but is anything but. Each angle has to be layed out and carefully measured for accuracy. The upper bevel has to be cut from two sides as my
circular saw can only reach a cut depth of 2.5".
Next step will be to add 1.5" above the speaker opening. It will also
get angles cut on all sides and a wide rabbet. The Walsh driver will
mounted on a 3/8" aluminum ring floating on a urethane gasket and then bolted to the cabinet (or something like that) as I might change my mind.
I have also wrestled with finishing options, I'm thinking a blue automotive finish, or veneer the cabinet with Birdseye maple with
a  deep blue stain and clear lacquer coat....So many possibilities
https://www.flickr.com/photos/147883144@N08/shares/9cY30G

Im going back to my beer and I hope you all have a good
Easter Holiday......🇸🇪

It's 1:15 in the morning, and my mind is racing....

So after having a lovely Easter with friends and family, I got home watched some
F1 racing (the only sport I love) and man was it a good race.

So I decided against using veneer as a finish option, not that it's hard but I think I want
something hyper modern, something that pulls the eye towards the speaker.
So automotive paint it will be, color is still up in the air, but blue, orange or......
You get the Idea, it's got to look super 😎 (cool).

Tomorrow it's router day, the openings for the passive radiators. I will counter sink the units
3/4"  with a bevel making the unit less proud.
Im also looking towards buying a new amp as I'm doing an electronic crossover I will need
six Channels of amplification. Got the amp for the Walsh units and the rear facing tweeters. I I also need one for the front tweeters. I want something killer so I've been looking at a
Firstwatt F6 stereo amp. Low power but I'll barely need any for the tweeter unit.

Anyway talk soon.....🇸🇪

Happy Saturday to all....

So the next next milestone was reach late this afternoon.
After a day filled with MDF and expletives, I finally got to what you see in the image....
The shape is spot on what I was looking for, and I wanted the Walsh driver to sit flush (ish) with the top surface of the cabinet so you can't see all the bolts. I am still thinking about welding up a metal fence contraption with some Damascus steel unless I change my mind.
As you can see I started the holes for the passive woofer but realized that a router bit can only plunge that deep. I tried my trusty jigsaw, but that didn't reach deep enough so I got to get a sawsall in the morning. Yes the sidewall is over 3" deep
at most points,  so a longer blade will solve that problem.

Next week I'm starting the housing and standoff for the ribbon tweeter. I'm thinking CNC machined aluminum, CF and some hi tech looking bolts to allow the housing to move in any axis. And I might change my my mind on that one too. But I promise it will look killer when I'm done...

Another good day, and more to come.....🇸🇪

Damn changes...

Sorry for the absence, but I made some changes and with that I ran in to the proverbial MDF wall. As the first unit is the pattern for the second one, things get fluid and before you know it something will
throw everything of kilter..Damn
Left the shop this evening feeling a little better and I most likely managed to save the bacon.
The passive radiators look great with the dark grey anodizing finish.
I'm excited as the units are tunable for how tight or loose you want sound to be, cool stuff.
No images today, but we are getting closer to test fitting of all the big drivers and with that take measurements for the tweeter bridge
which I think will be the piece de resistance..... ;)

Soon..........🇸🇪

It's warm.....

Living in California is da bomb, weather is perfect, skies are blue, and the political climate
is pretty agreeable (for me at least). But it's hot, it's not even summer and we're already bouncing in to the low 90's, making shop work a proposition of perspiration and heat exhaustion. Not complaining as I do love my life here in Cali, but I do miss some cooler days.

As you read in my previous post the project is a (free flow) expression of my ideas, hopes and wild mind. I do love the creative part of my self, but sometimes I don't know when to stop. And that's what happened here, it looked great, but I decided to change a few angles
here and there, to enhance the look of the cabinet.....BOOM

Suddenly I realized that I fu@#d up.......by adding one to many angles I made the mounting area a tad to small for the Walsh driver.

After walking aimlessly around Home Depot last night with the hope I would find a tool that would solve my problems.......... (did not happened).
I went back to the shop and solved the problem just like that. So I should have a perfect solution done by tomorrow I hope.

There's no problems, just solutions...........🇸🇪

Hey hey....
Relax and peace out, smoke some herb ( or vape) have a Cinnabon
and enjoy the evening. No need to get pissed or feed in to any Trolling.

The good thing is that the thread moves to the top.....right

Hey Joejoe did you get a hold of the moderator. Must be you're tired of seeing this
thread popping up, and refusing to die...lol
I know how to get a hold of a moderator, just write something inflammatory and I guarantee
an email with contact info will be in your inbox like one, two, three.

So it looks like OHM finally got a review on their 5000 system.
But that conclusion was very very strange.

Check it out: http://hometheaterreview.com/ohm-acoustics-walsh-tall-5000-floorstanding-speaker-reviewed/

As for my speakers and all the changes I made in the last few weeks
I finally went out to the shop this morning with the decision to finish
certain aspects of the design. This means I can most likely be on schedule by tomorrow.

Best..........🇸🇪

The pain of change....

Greetings everyone.
Things are moving forward slowly as I had a bout of RA which really suck
but I'm working around the issues.

As of last time I questioned the upper part of the cabinet, design wise. I though it was to soft
not angular enough. So the changes were made and I think the look is cleaner
and a little more masculine, hope you like it...

Tomorrow is cutting (routing) the last opening for the passive radiators. The bottom panels
will be cakewalk, then it's on to the second cabinet.

If anyone thought it seemed like a chore to figure out the cabinet design, it's nothing
compared to the mind games I'm going through regarding the finish.....
Auto lacquer, Plasti-dip, Veneer etc, etc. As I said before I want something awesome,
one of a kind, interesting and or shocking! Sounds easy, but not really as everything has been done literally. So I finally figured it out...But won't tell until the big reveal.

Heres an image of the newer design:
https://www.flickr.com/gp/147883144@N08/m8n4to

Thanks for checking in......🇸🇪

Congratulations Rodm 2001

These speakers do need some POWER so feed them as much as you can. No such thing as too much wattage for those babies.
Play around with placement, as they can get boomy to close to any wall surface.
please let us know when they're installed and a few of us here very familiar with anything OHM related...

Fun times ahead......🇸🇪
Hey guys...

Mapman long time no see :)

Yes that is the 5000 driver, due to all the glue and other leftovers from the "Cage"
i decided I needed  new drivers as they will be in the open. But John and the crew had
scraped and minimized any proof or name of manufacturer. So I scanned the internets
and voila......Wouldn't you know it, there it was in all its glory lol
Now I do have to add some doping to the paper cone and I want to cut of some ugly
metal tabs most likely used in the paint process.

Today I started to lay out the tweeter bridge, I'm using a 3/4" aluminum plates
laser cut and CNC machined. The whole tweeter assembly will float on a magnetic
repulsion system......totally cool me thinks😎
Thanks bud I'm trying....

Had an opportunity to talk to the importer of the tweeter units, and found out that
they are coming out with an upgraded unit....lol
So the question is, should I go with the "old" style tweeter or should I spend more
and get the new units.....Damn! And oh-well.

More soon.........🇸🇪

So more info dropped in to my inbox.

By now everyone nows that the  "Walsh" driver falls of dramatically
after about 2.4k which meens we have to x-over the tweeter as close to that frequency give or take  a few hundred hz. The ribbon tweeter I originally was going to use, likes to be crossed over at about 2.2k-2.4k with a fairly aggressive slope. The newer tweeter
is easier to drive (98db) and I can blend it in way lower at 1.6k with no issues and for the back fill I'll use the older version.
More money but I think it'll be worth it in the long run.

This is exciting.....🇸🇪

Hi asvjerry...

I do have a semi dedicated listening/home theater room (family room). I do find the sound better and more focused when I can disperse/diffuse the back sound field. I use art, plants,
sculptures, soft surfaces, and wow it does make a big difference. With that said, as some of you know, I did add a rear tweeter in the mix just to see what would happen, I was so taken by the extra depth, focus and overall reinforcement of the sound field (with a volume control)
that my new speakers will have both front and rear matching tweeter.
I am adding EQ with the electronic x-over which I think is the way to go. No space or acoustic environment is perfect, so being able to fine tune the system to the room is
totally smart...

talk soon.......🇸🇪

Back again for some thoughts on the EQ in the 5000 driver. If anyone would see the amount of wires (very thin wires) and switches with amazingly thin gauge jumpers between the switching network
and the x-over electronics, they would question the need for anything bigger than zip chord from amp to speaker.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/147883144@N08/shares/T605D2

Here's an image of the switcher innards, the small metal bridge is actually the switch. Not big enough to properly feed the signal un-interrupted. With my design all the drivers will be fed the signal directly from the amp.....should be amazing.

More very soon.......🇸🇪

More wires, resistors, or other circuitry in front of the drivers will add or change
the signal integrity in a negative way. I'm not saying it doesn't sound good in many
circumstances (like many Ohm speakers) but it could sound better with more micro
details, faster response, better imaging and overal more air in the presentation.

More tomorrow.......🇸🇪

I forgot one thing his speaker are not affordable at all, and there's a lot of amazing sounding
sub $500 speakers in the market place.....That's affordable and build way nicer than the Ohm's
Mapman before you have a stroke, I didn't ever  say they're not sounding great they actually do. But they could be better.....
But cutting corners is cutting corners. Yes you are making the "bottom line"
for the company and share holders. At some point you got to take a look at the competition
and say........Damn $5000 is getting an amazing value, beautiful cabinetry and custom built
drivers to meet custom specs.

Look at the 4/5000 (my speakers) The cost of all the hardware including
"Walsh" driver, tweeter switches, crossover, wiring, and speaker connector
will barely cost $175. Give or take $20. Ohm buys used cabinets for $200 on average,
Barely  touch the inside  (might add a brace or two).  Veneers the cabinet which nowadays
is so easy and simple due to the veneers being layed out on either wood or paper veneer,
you add contact cement (or its pre-glued) voila done.....

So what I'm trying to say is that not much effort went in to the product
to make more than $4000 in profit.

Does it sound great...Sure it does, but with some better engineering, better
parts, and more love put in to the speaker it could be totally amazing.

Mapman....

Do you know why I started to build the speakers?
After opening the can of the small mini's, and having the shock of my life!
The workmanship being so poor that not even a first time speaker builder
would have the balls to "glue" together such abysmal product. Yes it's built in a
"can" but that shouldn't give them the license to sell crap. If you don't believe me I'll be more that happy to show everyone the mess I payed big dollars for.

And if one product shows such disregard to decent workmanship, the chance
all of them have the same problem.
I understand you're a fanboy and that's OK, and I don't have issues with that
per say, but when you know there's a problem ( Ohm replaced/fixed two cans
for me and it doesn't surprise me one bit looking inside the "Can").
Call John tell him that there's a problem and customers might be catching on to the
issues and he could very easily up the quality to make the product worth the asking price.

And finally if you done something for 40years, there likely two options how things go.

One: you're so tired of all the crap, your on autopilot and stay on because you're making
money.

Two: you love what you do and strive to do things better every day. No one can question
the quality and ethics of your brand, and can't wait to get back to the office in the morning.

p..........🇸🇪

Hehe...
Give me a break, I can afford a $5k speaker thank you.
And if you can't understand what I'm saying I feel for you.

The idea here is not to put anyone here at blame as I only know
one person as far as I know at this forum.

But If you, or I are putting our hard earned cash on to any particular
product ( not necessarily Ohm) we expect a certain amount of quality and workmanship commensurate with the amount you pay.

That didn't happen for me, the trust and excitement went away as soon as I opened the "Can".

This project is for me, I'm not in the business to sell or build speaker and won't. But I think I can take the concept further, improve were I think it's necessary and with that making me happy and hopefully write some fun stories and some insight in to my crazy mind and ideas.

The weekend is here and I'm excited as both F1 in Monaco
and Indy 500 with one of my favorite drivers (Alonso) driving.
So it will be breakfast and brunch time racing for me......🇸🇪

Asvjerry thank you, I understand that being a fanboy is cool, and guess what, I was for
35 years with Nikon and couldn't stand Canon or the people that bought one. Now that's
ridiculous right! But I was blinded by my fan boy ship (now I laugh about it).

Jerry is very, very right, there's no Walsh technology in the modern Walsh speaker
none. It's Omni directional but some of it is wrong.....Yes it's weird that they're not using a
rear tweeter as most of the frequencies are cut of above 2.3khz. It blew me away when
I added the rear tweeter.

On another note, it was a great race day. Ferrari won at Monaco....Finally after
a dry spell Italy is happy today. The Indy 500.. Wow boring it ain't ever, and after realizing that my boy Alonso made it clear that winning the race was a possibility the friggin Honda
engine gave up in a cloud of smoke.....a total bummer, but I hope Alonso quits F1 and come over here for Indy racing....🇸🇪

Fugdged??? That you're a fanboy....Mapman just own it, doesn't make you a bad guy
just a fanboy.

Wrong like "it's not a Walsh driver"
I would listen to an expert in Walsh drivers IE. asvjerry

Thats all I'm trying to do "Mapman" improve upon the original copy of the Walsh driver.

Did that kind of answer your kind "questions"

Remember it's suppose to be fun.........🇸🇪

PS. Mapman you'll have a standing invitation to hear my speakers
when they're done. I also wanted to figure out what to call them. So I decided
to call the "Oh-my"
I don't understand Mapman....
Are you telling us that questioning certain things means you have no class?
Im sure you didn't mean that, did you?

Questioning of technology helps to move technology forward, companys improving, products improving. It's a win, win all the way around. If I was John I would read what's said here (I'm sure he does
hi John) take certain things to heart, improve and move the product forward in a positive way, not just make them more expensive.
Sorry for the death in the family.

Everything can be improved......🇸🇪
It looks like the forum police stole my last post.....must be my dirty mouth Im guessing.

asvjerryif I read that right (I might be wrong) I said something wrong about your knowledge
when it comes to the Walsh driver??? We actually spoke about five years ago as I was in
the market for a set of speakers. Unfortunately I had cancer and $10k was a little strong
at the time, especially not knowing if I would be kicking a year later or not.
I bought the 4/5000 not knowing much about The speaker, but I liked the originals so I took a leap of faith. When I got them I was basically out of it for about a year physically and mentally. But slowly I realized that something was missing. They did sound great with most
music, but I was missing something. And that's basically how things started.
Im not going over the story (if interested go back many many pages and read it from the beginning, it's a fun crazy read.
A few days ago I started to think that there might be a better 12" woofer/midrange driver
ot there somewhere. Something that cost more but might give me an extended midrange
clean up to 4khz and wouldn't you believe it, there it was about $250 not bad, so I might get a pair to try em out see if I can squeak out a little bit more out of the "Walsh" driver idea.
Love to try one of Jerrys babies.....hmmm

Its late time to go to bed......🇸🇪

And I thought I was over using the nectar of the Gods (Espresso).
But in this case there might be something stronger then Espresso, and
asvjerry is using it to its fullest strength (what ever it is) lol

I forgot the  image of the day, so here it is.
https://www.flickr.com/gp/147883144@N08/2deh1g
Almost done but my back and my poor poor fingers needed a few prescription
strength fun pills or I'll be up all night feeling sorry for my self.
And as you can see I do try to retain my hearing.

More soon my friends.....🇸🇪

The IOU

Greetings from an exhausted Swedish guy.
So I moved in to our current house about 25 years ago, and at the time a cool deck made from red wood sounded like a great plan.....and it was for the longest time.

One day I woke up and decided I needed an additional dog, She's the best little doggie
but she decided that peeing on the deck was way more comfortable then walking
an additional ten feet like all my other dogs always did. Six years later things had spiraled out of control and no matter what I did, a certain odor made BBQ'ing a less than fun.
So by Mothersday I told my wife I would re-do the deck at some point....the IOU was
pulled and now I'm doing deck duty,  way worse than building speakers I tell you.

Its great to see some movement in the thread and 14 + Million eyeballs is amazing.

Im getting a beer..........🇸🇪
The forum police will see Cialis, find It of topic, same with the bathtub.
As for lumber, that's the crap I'm tossing my friend, I built it 25 years ago
and I over used concrete anchores.....dang it. Now I'm paying for it, rusty nasty
and most likely not going to come out easily. That's for tomorrow. Just also realized that
it is my 25th wedding anniversary.
The last week I done bupkiss with the speakers, needed a break away from mdf dust.
does not mean I stopped thinking about it though.

..............🇸🇪
Hey Martykl....

That sounds killer, please shoot some images as I would love to see what you did with the space.
Decided so sleep in this morning as I woke up with what I would call "Deckpain" no fun at all,  but I cleared out the whole shebang. So now all I have to do is to cut of the steel anchors or possibly try to back them out of the concrete.

As I was lounging in bed I was thinking about how to attach the vertical tweeter bridge to the speaker. I think I will laser cut a plate in 3/4" aluminum that will in turn be part of the speaker cabinet and also were I can bolt in the main driver...

Time to get up for some Covfefe............🇸🇪💉
Countdown for fun.....

So tomorrow is the first day of LA Audio Show. I figure two days of walking, talking
And listening to some  killer audio me hopes. I want to hear the Mytec Brooklyn and
Im also in the market for a low powered amp for the front tweeters, cables for the cabinet wiring, and some music. I'm lucky that I know a lot of people in the business so a VIP lounge with booze, coffee and comfortable chairs will be used frequently by yours truly.

I'll bring a camera take some pictures and do some write ups for you guys,
If anyone want to meet up feel free to email me at peterhorvath6233@gmail.com
I will be there Friday afternoon and Saturday all day.

Should be a great weekend.......🇸🇪

Thanks Jerry....

I was planing to go today but my Arthiritis really flared up so Im medicated my self
and with that no driving. Tomorrow I'll go even if I have to take an Uber.
The deck was dismantled and it was an Herculean effort, but ultimately worth it.
I had to rent 3 dumpsters at $105 each, what a racket.

Tomorrow....LA 🇸🇪

I'll be there by lunch, by then I already consumed two Norcos.
by one I will have lunch, another happy pill with my Americano
and by then I'll be ready for the loud stuff (always use earplugs).

I might write something from the show if time allows.........🇸🇪
Must ha must have written the last post all jacked up on Ambien and Norcos...lol

Feeling good and ready to go to the show, I will get all the info and Chanel all that
to you my friends.

More in eight hours (or so)......🇸🇪
Just saw Jerrys explanation of what he sees in the mirror....lol

Very tired, saw a lot of stuf, but wasn't overwhelmed. As soon as I arrived I ran in to my friends that owns Possitivefeedback.com
Sat down and shot the breeze until they had to go to the room.
As I was having lunch at the bar counter I ran into David Saltz the owner of WireWorld cables. We had a great time bitching about politics which is always fun.
Stopped in to a bunch of rooms, and if the audio doesn't draw me in
within 30 seconds...bye bye. I found a lot of the bigger multi gazillion
what ever with amplifiers the size of big ice chests the worst.
I loved the little Legacy with the French metronome electronics absolutely fantastic. GamuT small book shelves sounded so sweet and gorgeous. The Book shelf Raido bang on and I would love to have a set. The smallest Yg acoustics sounded great, kind of funny when an older gentleman sitting in front of me bitching about the aluminum construction. Telling me that no cello was made from aluminum ever......what ever, it sounded great.  Heard a few Wilsons
but walked out after 30 seconds, none of hem appealed to me.
There was this Japanese company with a weird name but such sweet lovely sounding field coil speakers, room was packed and I can see why as they sounded right.....wow.
I expected to have my ears blown out within 10 minutes, but most
rooms kept the volume in check.
Amother very impressive speaker is the very large bookshelf speakers (on stand) PMC's very dynamic with bassthat surprised.
I never heard about Einstein speakers and electronics played on first class vinyl, again wonderful presentation in a smaller package.
Green mountain openback dipoles sounded so bright I had to leave.
Zu Audio the same no sweetness and they used a Firstwatt F6 and vinyl. I finally got stuck chatting with an old friend in the business
and then it was time to go home. If I forgot something and I'll have some images I'll put it up on Sunday.....

1:01am.......time for some sleep.......🇸🇪
Jerry you are one interesting dude......:)

One thing that I found on a lot of good sounding speakers, was a
type of ribbon or another. And the best sounding speaker I saw was this no name monster built by High Fidelity Cables, tons of drivers and the sweetest tweeter (ribbon) driver that looked like a Raal driver
and a 5" midrange CF cone. The weird thing was that it was sheet metal open baffle unit....friggin fantastic, but I think they had at least $100k worth of front end equipment and these cables with an in-line attachment looking like a chromed heat seeking missile.

The Mytek Brooklyn is such a cute and attractive unit, but it was only hooked up to headphones and I don't do headphones so I couldn't honestly give an honest take on the quality of the sound.

There was no way to sit down and listen to a specific amp so I'll going to have to go by what's recommended by my friends in the business.

I walked in to this room with ESS speakers and drivers, very interesting and I got to talk to one of the guys from the factory.
I was invited to the factory here in SoCal. I would love to sit down and listen to the units with my music, no people talking. They come in three sizes and the price ain't bad at about $320 no matter the size. Just another possible tweeter solution and the units X-over at 800hz and it's a dipole.

Worst sounding room was a set a Wilsons.......Soooo bad and depressing sounding I lasted maybe 60 seconds as I felt so bad for the guy.
Down stairs was a Killer Atmos theater with over 20 speakers a big
laser projector with a 160" screen. My buddy Paul  happened to
rep most of the equipment in the room. It was amazing if I heard it lol
I got busy chatting with Paul about life etc. and before I knew it they closed down for the evening...crap

Other speakers: Magico s3 Sounded good not my cup of tea
Focal Soprano sounded very very nice, with a nice tight bass.

Cables, what can you say, there's more attractive snakes than in the Amazon jungle. It's more jewelry then anything else I would say,
but they do make a difference and if you do your due diligence
you should be able to find something great for less then $10,000

I'm watching some Indy racing so ta ta........🇸🇪

No doubt that there's a load of great stuff, but for me personally
I find that very little stands out as "Special" most of the stuff is the same old stuff with some lipstick.
If I would compare to an audio show 20 years ago, I would say that things are looking way better, there's more bling stuff and cables abound everywhere. Does it sound way better I'm talking $100k better? I don't think so. In some ways it looks like cheaper products are getting some love on the scene and with that you could find some really decent sub $500 speakers, subwoofers and electronics.

Have a great day...........🇸🇪
I walked through the hallway I took a right, they invited me in
handed me a 12" ipad like a sommelier in a fine restaurant.
Sat down and casually asked me to chose something....wow thats
unusual som I  picked a Supertramp song.....how cool is that.
I guess he had the full Tidal archive streaming with pictures.

I have an IPad and it would be simple to hook up and pay $20 a month or what ever it is.
I wanted to add a few other good sounding speakers:
Bryston speakers very nice with their electronics.
Some German horn speaker Lovely sounding And look the part.
Gaia or something looked amazing like something from the 5th element (the movie) sounded like perfection.
Nola a smaller about 4" tall version  very nice.

Thats it for now.....🇸🇪

Hi rodm...

You might get lucky and your integrated will be ok, but that's all it's going to be.
I gurantee that you will need way more power and or current to have them come alive.
I do have a pair of 2000's on loan and I don't have a problem using 400-500w when playing
loud or if I use a very dynamic cd. Just my 0.2 cents.
I did actually use a Marantz 130w per ch amp, and it fell on its face as soon as I cranked up the volume YMWV

More power always equals more fun.......🇸🇪
Good way to go, at least you prove to your self what's needed.
Most small brands do have a trial period, not a bad way to go when
you're ready to go.

BREAKING NEWS:
rodm_2001 will need more power.........🇸🇪
Yes if you use a sub your speaker will work less hard no doubt, but only one problem.
The unit (receiver, integrated) must have a X-over or it's going to be a little hard to separate the bass from midrange, tweeter action.
BUT.....But someone just said, I will use the X-over in the sub/subs. I never liked doing just that, more connections, more speaker cable, and if you try to save money you most likely have a inexpensive sub which equals crappy electronics and questionable bass...

Damn it just buy a better amp....lol 🇸🇪
I just wanted to add, I don't believe you need a sub with those speakers. there's plenty of bass and it goes fairly low with a reasonable output me thinks. If you play electronica or have a penchant for organ music a sub or preferably two is a must.
I think two is the only way to go, better for output, better for room integration and it sounds way better as it integrates in the system much better....Now the previous words about bass output of your
speakers it's all dependent again on the amp....

Look at the output of the speaker, if I don't remember wrong there at about 87db at 1 meter at 1w  And they are 4ohm  IE a hard load for most low powered amps.

I need an Espresso or two......🇸🇪
Excellent discussion.....

For deep impact and gut wrenching power I do agree full heartedly
subs are a must. As a few people know I've been in the business and tried so many subs from A-Z that when I decided too go gang busters last time I wanted new subs.
To go all out on subs you can spend your kids college tuition.....no problem. But at some point I said no way I'm spending $30k on subs.
So looking around, talking to a few crazy people I decided to build my own subs and save some big bucks. My house is built on a raised foundation so I decided to take on an infinite baffle design.
As I dove in to the planing stages I decided for a design containing four 18" drivers per side.....Ohhh no that got vetoed faster.....You know the rest of the story if your married lol. So two 18" per side was fine.

My wife is very agreeable to all sort of hair brained ideas I have but
before you know it she sniffed out the next hurdle....the holes in the floor. Due to the design I use the cavity under the house as the infinite baffle. That battle was slightly easier then a six foot stack of
18" drivers, at least the floor can be patched the other option was an eyesore of the first kind (according to her).
With all that surface area and 2000 watts per side even a small movement will energize the room, no strain, no chuffing ports just pure energy......amazing. If you feel wanting for good deep vibrations
in a movie, I never heard anything even coming close to the energy
and output all the way down to 5 hz, 8hz will make the house react like we have an earth quake the house moves like in waves and all
the wiring inside the walls will slap the drywall.
Now even though the 4/5000s are dipping in to the 25hz region I find that to get the best sound for music is to x-over at 100 hz yep it sounds cleaner less muddy, just more musical. For movies I open the taps and let them go full tilt as it does sound fuller.

Another weekend for F1 Racing so I'm a happy man...🇸🇪

Just wanted to say....WOW
The F1  race in Canada was A-mazing  and I'm pumped. And I didn't
know that Champagne taste great in a sweaty shoe, Patric Stewart does (If you watch F1 you will know what I'm talking about).

I will try to work on the speakers this week, as few of you know I do have some health issues that makes it hard to work sometimes due to pain, but I will do my best to get started again tomorrow.

So I do have to make some decisions on the tweeter unit as The whole upper assembly is dependent on the type of tweeter I want to use. I have given the ESS unit a thought as it does sound pretty awesome and it's amazingly easy to X-over the the unit to the Walsh driver.
The issue I'm having is size and weight, the thing ways anywhere from 10-16lbs and the overall size at 6" tall on the big bad boy is something I have to consider. If anyone has an input feel free to tell me what you think......I'm open to suggestions.

Other than that I love the way the cabinet looks even though I went through some tough times getting it right. I've done some test fitting of the finish and I will be killer and I believe no one else has done it
so that's very exciting.

Have a great rest of the weekend.......🇸🇪

Fantastic, the thread is alive....

Let me start to answer the layout of the main driver and tweeter assembly. Nothing is what you think with the Ohms, normally it would be called smoke and mirrors, but in this case JS has managed to make strawberry pie from potato dumplings and that
is his magic. If you open the "Can" the first thing you see is a round
3/16" thick (varies from speaker to speaker) plywood platform.
This platform is approx the diameter of the backside bottom of the
main driver. On the platform (which is glued to the bottom of the magnet) you will have X-over parts the wiring harness going to the switch network, the tweeter and that's it on the top. On the bottom
is a two inch thick insulation pad made from re-cycled denim.
I have certainly thought over the why of this part and the only reason I can come up with is that the platform by it self would smear the sound stage if left in its raw state.  Here are a few images of the
platform. Sorry for the state of its shape Etc. But I needed it out
and removed from the main driver.

So I see no issues with an ESS driver, or any other type of driver
above the main driver.

I agree you need beefy power supplies or it's a no go! These speakers are incredibly hard to drive and I can follow the power deliver on the output meters and very few speakers has managed to
come even close to what both 2/2000 and 4/5000 has managed to do.

Thank you for the input on the tweeter choice, I will mull it over
this week and make some decisions. As for attaching the tweeter
my solution is so deliciously cool that you wish 😜 you thought of it
and I will share very soon.

One more thought on subs. One of the big things youlll find when you add subs is that the stereo width opens up and the delivery is deeper and more palpable (just my take on it.

P...........🇸🇪

HeHeHe.....

I think there's some strange things in the Brooklyn water....

Here is how the smallest units look like on the inside.

(For peace on earth I'm only showing the front)

As for tweeter, there's nothing like it shipped from Ohm.

Now I'm going out to do some work on the beasts......🇸🇪
