My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Now that i displayed the VAC monos i think they ran even faster...but i am still hoping someone can come through and let us hear their amp.
Clarity isn’t a guaranteed recipe for satisfaction. To me, it can’t be all clarity and everything is unimportant.
See people, just because something sounds clean and clear doesn’t mean that you’ll sit there for hours. There needs to be a well balanced presentation consisting of:

-clarity (as mentioned)
-control (never mentioned by Viber)
-speed
-dynamics
-imaging (don’t think Viber mentions)
-soundstage width and depth
-soul
If i say that as long something has pure clarity then i don’t care about the rest of the categories above then I’d be lying. I care about all of the above and have been trying tons of gear to ultimately find something that can at least give me a little of everything mentioned and that isn’t easily found.
Did you all get a chance to hear the video from today? (Nobody commented on here). That presentation has a big sound, VERY engaging and clear. That wasn’t just the amps that did that. Don’t think for one second it was simply the amps that are doing all the work. There are $64,000 worth of XLR and speaker cables playing there that you know nothing about and a different preamp too. This is a system and not just an amplifier. Those monos have a tremendous supporting cast.

On a different note, 12 days have passed and i have NOT heard a damn thing from anyone who is willing to offer me the opportunity to review their affordable killer amp. NOT ONE.

I can go quite far but yes at this level it is more about the differences in sound rather than one being extremely superior to the other. Once you play here, where i am, you will soon realize that almost everything sounds awesome but you have to be the one to choose the one that checks most of your boxes.
Let's see where this takes us?

Arc ref6se = a speedboat in the ocean
Ref10= a yatch in the ocean

In case the analogy isn't understood, please speak up.
speedboat: fast, agile, immediate
yatch: big space, mainly cruises at low speed, relaxed ride-quality, typically never going fast anywhere.
This is part 3 of the video series:

https://youtu.be/5Mx7GaWG5Hs

This video finalizes the "mid-tier" group amplifiers and it sets the stage for what could be a controversial video: "bottom tier" group amplifiers.

Interesting question and by the way i had to think about this particular question A LOT... Which one is on top between Luxman and Merrill 118?
This is going to be a hard one for me guys and i have to say i took a lot into consideration to come up with it:

-Newer design
-Breakthrough engineering with innovation
-Faster sounding
-Deeper and more controlled bass
-More Neutral

I have to say it here first for the world to see so i will go out on a limb and give the nod to the Merrill Audio 118s. You heard it from me.
Merrill 118 > Luxman 900u (monos or stereo)

@zprr:
I was given that feedback about both music servers. The system in which this took place is world class and yes all options were installed on the Taiko and he tried roon as well as Taikos software. The system is about $450k and there were several people in this shootout who voted for the n30. I have no opinion because i haven’t owned eitherThat said, Taiko needs to fix the buggy and "Atari like" software.
I am putting the finishing touches on the last video which will have the amps i consider "dead last".
You all need to subscribe and turn on your notifications. It will go live and i won’t post a link here just like with today’s video.

Synergistic Research powercell with SRX powercord has arrived and the initial impressions, dead cold, zero miles, etc is QUITE IMPRESSIVE.
I am actually in disbelief...
Yes my monos are connected into the outlets but might try the powercell to see what happened...i have only connected the preamp into the powercell and i heard an instant improvement.

Great question -

As many of you know by now, I started documenting my journey on here since October 16th, 2016 for a total of 5 years, 5 months as of yesterday.

It has been an amazing journey and I am blessed to have been able to own everything you guys have seen and of course express my opinions along the way. That said, this has been a tremendous amount of work which includes herniated disks, driving hundredths of hours in order to locate equipment that I wanted to review and thousands upon thousands of dollars out of my own pocket plus time away from my family. I have been riding here SOLO without a single dime being given to me by any single manufacturer (although some loaned me a few things for me to play with and I am appreciative of it).

In order for Jay's Audio Lab to succeed and continue to grow, bigger things need to happen which includes partnering with individuals/brands/sponsors who all understand that I will not deviate nor change my core.

I can not grow alone and I have pushed BY MYSELF to almost 10k subscribers. If my goal is to grow larger, I need to have "extensions of me" that provide me the help needed.

The forum will continue to stay alive because it is very special to me. I will respond questions that may have to do with a particular video or something that i was not quite clear on video.

This thread is now supplemental to my main body of work: YOUTUBE.

The trip to Puerto Rico that you guys saw, the invite to fly to Denmark to visit the Borresen & Ansuz factory (all comped by the audio group from Denmark), etc are all precious opportunities that came to me because of YouTube

The reality is that Youtube is moving my needles far more than the thread and it should be no surprise to many of you since forums dont have the level of exposure that YouTube does.

I have to partition and be strategic about my time on a daily basis. I need to remain focused and also hand-pick specific components that I will represent and will use on my channel, but do not get it twisted. NOT ONE of these product manufacturers came to me asking me to represent them. IT WAS ME who decided to call them and represent them based on my own findings and trials with such products. I will continue to review other brands that I don't represent and still give my unbiased opinion on their products so that will not change.

Lastly, and I want to be sincere here with you all, man to man conversation, the reality is that most (not all) who read this thread have never really bought anything from me or even paid me for a single consultation. There is nothing wrong with that, but I have done over 5 years of work here and Youtube has brought me far more success in the 2 years I've been on it than this thread has in 5 years. I wish I had started the channel 5 years ago!

Anyhow, I hope you all don't take offense with anything I've said above. I know we are all grown men here and real talk and truthfulness is always the way to go.

Jay

Still waiting on giant killers to show up at my door. Zero noise and no signs of anything coming to me.
Has anyone read the comments from today's video?
Word on the street is that today's video is the best my system has ever sounded on YouTube from any other previous set ups to include all my previous speakers.
I received text messages as well from some of my sources saying the same thing.
How do you all feel ?
Hmm...
One thing we have overlooked is that if this took place and the outcome was what we expect it to be, the speakers might get blamed for it...
Sneak Peek:
Pure Class A monoblocks and Wilson Audio Alexandria XLF as well as the Synergistic Research Powercell SRX!!!

Amplifier temp: 152F
Room is toasty

Pure Class A or Tubes? What's it gonna be y'all?

You all confused and scratching your head as far as what you prefer? That is what makes this ride fun as hell.
Stay tuned for more!
Let the audience here decide which amp they want to see come into my room. I honestly don’t follow the "abcdefg" class D amps nor do I know which amp is which. There are many amps that have been mentioned.
That said, the entire purpose of this is to let the world see how these amps sound against the heavy competition i have here.
If anyone here is a believer that these giant killers can come in here and kill the big heavy hitters, i want to from YOU. I want to be proved wrong.
I SERIOUSLY WANT for someone to show me these amps and prove me wrong so i can sell mine and put the money in the bank.
The same goes for cables: have a unknown cable brand that you feel murders the crazy obscene expensive cable brands out there such as Nordost, transparent, synergistic, audioquest Dragon, etc etc? I also want to hear from you.
I don't want to spend $10k on a powercord. I rather spend $1,500 and save $8500.

They will blame the speakers by saying they have huge woofers and too many drivers, etc etc.... Plus the icing on the cake will be when they say the comparison should be done using more."average" speakers...

So i just plugged the vac monos into the synergistic Research Powercell and i am using the 2ohm taps and holy crap... The amps are dead cold...zero warm up and they sound UNBELIEVABLE...
That said, if i crank them up loud, i don't think i can relax into the presentation.. they might feel a little "too much" but maybe it is a mismatch somewhere else in the system (again, this is only at 88db plus).

So this is interesting...
I had created an account on what’sbestforum a few weeks ago and my user name was "Jay’s Audio Lab" because I’m not trying to hide my identity.
Anyhow, i never posted once or anything and so today i went to log on and what do ya know...i am BANNED 🚫 !!!!
Interesting to see this and so i shared this someone else and he said they banned me because they might see me as a threat to their sponsors?.
Interesting... Hmm...
The same thing happened to a few dealers as well. I've heard manufacturers who sponsor the site can have posts removed as well.
Maybe i should make a video about this type of stuff...that would put fire under someone's seat.
Well, the time has come. The most anticipated video I’ve released this year:
POWER AMPLIFIERS: My Bottom Tier Group
Video drops on Tuesday at 11am eastern time. Please subscribe and turn on your notifications so you are alerted the moment the video goes live.

https://youtu.be/z66_Na_ho0E
@ronres:
Any idea why i was banned? I never posted a thing on there.
I'm very curious to know.
Let me delete my response to the post above...i don’t think Ron needs anyone to come here to save him. I am sure he will come back in here to disclose the reason why i was banned from what’sbestforum without me ever posting a single thing on there.
My audience here wants to know and pretty soon my YouTube channel will also want to know.
Who knows, maybe Ron will say that it was a mistake and that i shouldn't have been banned because i have done nothing on that forum and that my account is activated again?
Strange things can happen
@flame,

"Jay, you must recognise that your content both here and on YouTube - whilst enjoyable and entertaining - has now evolved to become commercial in nature."

Or Jay can easily answer that comment  as follows:

" You the boss? Or am I talking to the boss? "
I’m not going to get into it with a representative. Put your manager on the phone. Thanks
Meaning that i was talking to the boss; "Ron -co-owner". I go straight to the boss and hash it out. I doubt the boss needs any representatives to answer questions directed at him - which they also didn’t quite answer by the way.
I’m still waiting to hear from him, but I’m sure he will respond when he has a moment.

Well... I appreciate you guys sticking your neck out for me.
That said, if Ron wants to answer publicly on this thread then cool and if he does not then that's fine as well.
Regardless, let's keep doing our thing  here as we have done over the last 5 years.
More videos coming including my bottom tier amps which releases tomorrow at 11am ET. Please subscribe and turn on your notifications so you are aware when the video goes live.
Thanks again guys!
Sounds good. It looks like we have a shootout in our hands folks.
Yes Viber, since you are stepping up to the plate, I'll do a blind folded shootout as we did with my dacs.
Go ahead and shoot me an email with your info  (you can find it on my YouTube videos) and we will take it from there.

It’s simple:

Over 5 years of owning some of the best components out there has been enough for me to know what I can select and cosign on. If I put my name behind a product (artesanía stand is one brand i represent - i am a dealer for it) then this means i believe in it and stand behind it. As i said, i have my resume written on 386 pages here. I have earned my stripes and know when something is special and rather than having to buy from dealers, why not have the line myself if I keep buying it over and over again? Why let dealers keep making money off of me?

I do the leg work, i review the product, i buy it with my own money and they carry the lines and they make the money selling it. I gotta pave my own way and create opportunities for myself.

My unbiased reviews will continue except I’ll have lines that will be very close to me based on my hands-on experience with them.

Notice i didn’t have to explain myself here to anyone because I financed myself and I’m not a publicly traded company nor do I have business partners that loan me money. When you ride SOLO, you get to do whatever you want.

With that said, I won’t keep explaining myself over and over. I think i have been very clear with everything and everyone.

I rather live 15 years as a lion than live 30 years as sheep.

Should be fun boys. I hope my music server is here this week.
I definitely want to thank Viber for giving us this opportunity.
Alright guys, i hope you enjoy the video that releases at 11am today
Bottom - Tier power amplifiers!
Viber
we all forgive the long posts you used drop in here. Greatly appreciated by everyone here what you have done.
We all better not mess with Viber anymore!

I currently only  represent Artesania Audio for stands and I will be disclosing my next line (not another stand manufacturer) very soon. I can be contacted at jayaudiolab@gmail.com.

By the way, my email address is always on the description of each video i release.

Well boys,
I just wrapped up an interview with the COO from KRELL. He saw my videos and wanted to talk to me about what KRELL is working on and many more topics.  You don't want to miss this interview. Jay is going next level!
It's so weird how this hobby is. Today, i prefer my VACs over my "secret" class a monos and last week it was the other way around... The mind is really weird...
I still think that footers have no place with ultra high end. Something about it robs me of the musicality that some electronics naturally have.
More detail is there but the soul vanishes and the connection with the music leaves the components as well. I will articulate things further in the future. For now, the only thing i want to give you all as advice is to be careful with tweaks... Added resolution doesn’t translate into longer listening sessions. There is such thing as too much salt or sugar when cooking in the kitchen and this is no exception with audio.
