My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

@psnyder:

what's up Paul? long time no see..
Yep, i agree with your statement above.
Giant killer = a component that is praised to be as ferocious and as big as a pitbull but has the body of a miniature pinscher and the bark of a Chihuahua. They tend to be dogs that "should" protect the house in the same fashion as guard dogs and aren't as "high maintenance" as the larger breeds that eat 40 lbs of food a month. They are highly liked by the masses but for unknown reasons nobody has seen these "giant killers" actually killing the big dogs. This is the mystery that the legend of the Chupacabras didn't even come close to.
now ricevs begins to see the reaction from others and he begins to go on vacation from this thread for a few days until the next opportunity arises...
My challenge is good for 30 days. Will someone step up before this offer expires?
Well, we shall see.
I'm waiting for my email to blow up when i roll out of bed tomorrow with people willing to send in their giant killers...
The issue is if my amps crush these giant killers then i look like the bad guy... Ain’t that a b!tch....oh well.

With that said, one thing i didn't bring up is if i should use my cheapest or most expensive amps for this exercise... Oh wait, you all don't know this yet...maybe I'll leave it for this coming weekend... Yes, i will unveil a set of tube monos this coming weekend. Don't miss it.
@jafant:
So I’m still breaking in the new XLRs and my speaker cables arrive this Friday.
I plan to do the formal video of the cables I’ll be using this coming weekend.
As a side note, i have about 200 hours or so on these new xlrs (they just came out to the market by the way) and I’m now finally starting to hear things that are quite impressive:
More separation, imaging is wow and bass is starting to get punchier.
This Friday i will be over at Suncoast audio and i will be filming FROM THERE, my top, middle and bottom tier amplifier groups. Some of these amps are amps that Mike has on the floor and they won’t make the top list. This will be done to show everyone that i can come into a dealer’s showroom and STILL give you all my opinion in front of the dealer himself.
Mike has agreed to let me tell it like it is even if it means that i won’t be praising all his amplifier lines as being the best of the best. This video will be awesome 😎
hi there,
no experience with any of those integrateds other than the Diablo 300.
That was the first integrated that blew me away.
Unfortunately video screens aren't like audio. Audio goes up in price like cars and cellphones.  Video is like computers...
He won’t send either one because he says I’ll like my "sugar coated" amps instead of his ultra linear, highly neutral and transparent amps.
The room is toasty, the amplifiers are at 158F and 152F respectively. The XLRs seem to be broken in and so is the valhalla 2 USB. No music server, no special speaker cables and yet i believe this might be the very best my XLF have sounded?
-Monstrous soundstage -check
-Imaging that makes it feel as if you were listening to two separate speakers

-Clarity

-Insane musicality
-Subwoofer bass - not woofer bass

-Depth for days -

Is this really happening? Am i really hearing this in here? Can I even make a bold statement such as these monos are perhaps the best I’ve heard in here? I’m not prepared to put that in writing with my signature on it but i am quite IMPRESSED...
Jay visits Suncoast audio and here’s a sneak peek at the upcoming video.
You don't want to miss the full 3 part video. Lots of interesting talk between Mike and myself!

You all need to listen to listen video that just dropped. It gives us an idea of HOW a speaker designer thinks. This is quite interesting

Ok
I was just told that the AGD amp will not be sent to me. This means, we have zero offers to send any product to me. It’s September and my offer runs through the end of the month.
After that, i won't be entertaining more of this because my system will begin to take shape
Hi Viber,
I've received a few messages from people and here's one for example:

"Hi Jay, just an FYI, I'm loosing interest in this thread because viber6 keeps derailing it - he uses it as a chat room. I now just pass his posts but it can be hard to know what the few others are talking about due to lost context. Not sure how you can disrupt him, but he adds nearly nothing, and that is being generous. Really like what you are doing, but this thread is very hard to read (I've followed since nearly the beginning - I have experience with a lot of the upper tier stuff, but not the more current batch of stuff you've had so I don't comment since I can't speak with any authority). Meant for this to be short, oh well."

I'd like to politely ask if you can use more private messages when it comes to ongoing conversations that might not exactly be aligned with the thread? I'm not saying you can't post - but please keep what I said in mind.
Respect for the xlf. The last speaker made my Dave Wilson. Wouldn’t it be something else if i end up selling it and all of a sudden this speaker appreciates in value because it’s the last work from Dave?
Look at what happened to Porsche vehicles with their V8 non turbo engines...their price has skyrocketed now that they only make V8 or V6 twin turbos..

@kren: you aren’t disrespecting it. I can totally understand why you feel this way. Daryl is a fresh mind, new ideas, more tools, social media. These are things that older minds have a difficult time with. It’s no different than you and i are in our 60s or 70s - we won’t be able to keep up with technology then. Our brain won’t be able to absorb things quite as easily.
The biggest hurdle for Wilson Audio has been the criticism and obviously the hate. That said, this comes with the territory. You can't please everyone.
Well,
I have finally received my speaker cables yesterday and i gotta say that these are THE BEST SPEAKER CABLES i have ever heard through my XLF.
Ladies and gentlemen, those of you who don’t believe in cables are in for a great surprise.

@viber:

Give it a rest. If you feel that the back and forth is going to be ongoing with others in regards to a specific topic and you know you would like to articulate your thoughts to them by writing long posts then just take to private messages or open up a new thread. I’m trying to be as nice as possible and again, im letting you know the sentiments of some people who are regulars here. I’m not saying by any means that you should not contribute.
If the topic of the thread is about building powerful engines, repeated posts about building transmissions isn’t too far off but it isn’t exactly aligned with the main discussed topic. I’m not being a d!CK either so don’t take offense.
I rather you keep grilling me about giant killers 😂 (just don’t overdo it )

Anyhow, when the hell are any of you going to show your face to me on a zoom call? I feel like i gotta a lot of regulars here that don't want to show their face. Damn, i don't bite folks 😆
And so we begin to ascend to the top.
Here is a video from today. I highly recommend headphones because the second track will rattle your brain. Listen to the control and the room pressurizing on this track.
I hope you all enjoy this one!
Pay close attention to the 6:18 mark. Wear headphones if possible at this particular point. The room is fully pressurized and under massive control.
Notice how the vocals and highs DO NOT get drowned out by the massive bass?

Guys - no music server or power conditioner either and yet the sound is quite impressive. I'm using a 10 year old MacBook to feed a signal to my msb DAC. Just imagine once i bring the music server on board and a new power conditioner?

Well,
As i sit here listening to these tube monoblocks for the last 2 hours, i can certainly say that they EASILY best a bunch of solid state amps I've owned in different areas:
Resolution
Bass
Engagement factor

More to come!
You all wanted to see this on my channel,
Here you go: Reference level tube monoblocks for the first time in my room:

https://youtu.be/dYb8C-KB8ns
Today, during part 2 of a 3 part video series i will go over the "mid fi" brands. What will these brands be? There will be shockwaves and also an interesting comment about a brand which i have been told did not want his new amps to be reviewed by me. Which one will it be?
You will find out today at 1030 am ET.
DONT MISS THIS ONE!
video was too long..there will be more middle group amps coming on the next video.
160s is so much better than the 160m...
Remember guys, I’ve not finished my mid tier group list of amps and of course...the long awaited list of bottom of the list power amps I’ve owned. Which brands will land as the worst amp brands? You shall see 🙈
I haven’t used many tube amps and  you haven’t watched all future videos that I’ll be releasing...
This tube amp pretty much trashes a long list of solid state amps I've owned. I don't even want to go into more details so i don't offend people who may have bought some of these solid state amps. This tube amp is FOR SURE tier 1 group. No it's not ARC so drop those ideas.  I've never heard a tube amp sound this good. The only downfall is that they need time to open up and sound good but other than that i don't see any other issues.
@mr139113:
Not trying to dismiss what you are asking, but this thread is not really about the gear you have asked about. I also don't believe you follow my thread very closely (you have 2 posts total under your username) which leads me to believe that this is why you have not "picked up" on what i just stated above.
@ricevs:
When are you starting your own YouTube channel and do your video of tweaks and giant killers in the format you described i should follow above? Hell, I’ll subscribe to your channel if you do. This would give you less time to spend on this thread because the YouTube channel will keep you busy as hell shooting and editing content. Why not try that and let me know how it works out for you? Maybe that will help your finances since you'll have a way to market your tweaks? You'll make about $190 dollars a month from YouTube by loading 3 videos a week and editing about 4-5 hours a week.
Try it - who knows.
You all haven't noticed that lately i actually hang on to amps more than before? I'm surprised you guys haven't seen that...
This keeps being repeated to him but he keeps coming back... Don’t know who or what needs to said to him to understand things...
Got it. I get your point. That said, it seems that you all want to see eye candy instead? 😂
I plan to show one of the 2 sets of monos soon.
The constellation monos will be up for sale this weekend since i will no longer  make them part of the rotation of amps. I plan to have one set of solid state monos and maybe one set of tube amps.
One thing that i feel you all must remember is that i don't have a music server and the presentations you will be comparing against will probably be those where i had the Aurender.
Remember, the music server plays a huge role.
@dguitarbut:
Don’t you find it interesting when i play my system in "raw" or "unfinished" mode so you can then compare my before and after results? THIS IS the reason for the exercise. How are you going to know HOW MUCH better things get if you don’t have a starting point?
If i gave you a Lamborghini as your first car and that’s all you ever drove, how can you gauge HOW GOOD it is if that’s all you’ve owned? You have no way to compare to something else.
Right now, I’m listening in "unfinished" mode so that when i get my music server I’ll be able to know exactly what changed.
That said, I’ve got no issues with people who unsubscribe because i never said i was going to meet everyone’s needs. I got a bunch of people that claim to hate this n that about the channel but i can ASSURE YOU, they STILL watch me or read what I’m saying. WHY?? Because (once again) NOBODY DOES WHAT I DO and as long as I am the only one doing this at this level (there aren’t other channels that zoom in on the ultra high end), I’ll be fine.
I mean NO DISRESPECT, but i don’t follow the dudes who have YouTube channels that primarily focus on Hondas and Toyotas. I wanna watch the YouTube channels that show the Calvo motorsports vipers, McLaren 720s, twin turbo lambos, etc etc and guess what? I cant afford any of those cars but does that mean i shouldn’t watch it because I’ll never own one? Nah... I still enjoy every minute of it.
I always want to look at what’s ahead of me and not what’s in my rearview. If life forces me to go down with regards to electronics then I’ll deal with it and be ok with it because i came from "the gutter" with regards to electronics. It won’t be in unfamiliar territory in any way, shape or form.
My vision is to keep pushing HARD and maybe in the next 2 years I’d have the XVX or something like that but BELIEVE ME it is HARD WORK to get there. It hasn’t been a walk in the park for me to get here. I don’t have a Middle Eastern Prince relative that sends me money to play. I gotta grab the shovel every damn day and dig deep, sweat, and not complain.
I’m not trying to give life lessons here but if there is one thing i can share here is that NONE IT, ABSOLUTELY NONE of the stuff you see here has been given to me. I just work my ass off and if I’m not getting where i feel i should be, then i immediately find something else to do to help me get there.
When i got a taste of the ultra high end for the first time, i was hooked and i worked two jobs and did whatever side gigs i could do to earn more money so i can buy what i wanted. I've NEVER BEEN the dude that is happy working 40hrs a week and take my paycheck home and be content if i was able to have money leftover to buy cigarettes (i don't smoke).
I'm thinking of heading out to capital fest and shoot videos for my channel even in the middle of this pandemic.
Why? Because i see opportunity for content and to give you all footage of what many  won't be able to see.
I'm wired different i guess.
i will be revealing what tube amp i bought shortly. Video will drop soon.
stay tuned!
Next steps:
Which preamp will go best with it?
Arc ref6se?
Soulution 725?
DAC direct?

Omg i just removed the 725 Soulution and inserted my arc ref6se... 😳
The arc preamp and vac amps is just WOW WOW WOW... I suspect I'm not going to bed tonight.
Will it shock some people if i decided to do an all tube rig and ditch my solid state gear? Because right now, that's what I'm feeling like doing.
I'm not finding myself analyzing a damn thing but just letting the music flow. I'm quite impressed
I plan to attend if the stars align and work doesn't get in the way.

With regards to the Arc ref6se sounding amazing with vac, I think it's the tube synergy and we should not forget that having components that match well together is super important. You can make a Mephisto sound atrocious if you use a cost no object dac and skip a preamp.

Interesting initial reaction on the YouTube comments of this video. People seem incredibly impressed.

What you heard is a tube amp with a solid state preamp fyi.
