WCSS . Sorry, but, you DO NOT own this thread . If you owned the Thread then you could delete posts that you don not like , or ban people you do not like .People are free to state their opinion. You can ask the moderators that. You are the OP. That is all. The problem is that you have the attitude that you do own it. . Anyone can request for someone to be banned or a post to be removed. The moderators decide that. Here is a post from another site explaining just that. What is it with some pathologically controlling original posters who think they own and control any thread they start, and take it personally when it becomes obvious they do not? I have started any number of threads and have never felt that way. I have noticed OP’s who: 1. .......are the world’s most officious on-topic police; if things don’t settle back quickly into their version of what the thread is supposed to discuss, they are screaming to the moderators to close the thread. 2. ......go ballistic if the answers are not what they wanted to hear; then they are also asking the moderator to close the thread because they are no longer getting out of it what they wanted, totally ignoring that a valid discussion of the thread topic may be ongoing and that the world does not revolve around them personally. 3. ......conversely object when an out-of-control thread is closed. ("How could you close MY thread without consulting me?") I am the original poster of this thread. However, I do not "own" it, and I do not have any more control of it than any other poster who comes along and adds to the discussion. I recognize that the moderators do have control of it, however; we have to agree to that principle when we first enroll to post on City-Data. I do not take it personally, as I am not a control freak. We are supposed to be adults here, but sadly, I guess that will never happen with everybody.

When I hear “organic” I’m thinking absence of electronic haze, hearing the wood tones or metal tones or flesh tone if vocals, lack of signature. Where as “coherent” I think of not hearing individual drivers separately, consistent from the highs to the bass. Like the sound emanating from one full range driver, or no speaker at all. Not noticing the speakers in the room is the ultimate coherence. IMHO. I agree 100% . I think that is a perfect explanation of the terms |
well, tubes are not "pure sounding" so does that make tube gear garbage because they are rolled off or not pure enough? I personally do not think so. I have ZERO issues with tubes and i really enjoy the flavor they inject into the music. I totally disagree that tubes are not Pure Sounding. To me most Tubes sound more "REAL" than transistors. Some Tubes tubes are rolled off, but not all. I own and have used NOS Telefunken 12AX7 (Diamond Logo etched in bottom of glass) smooth plates, and they are anything But rolled off. They are Fantastic. I agree with you WCSS. I enjoy Tubes |
@techno_dude Preamp or no preamp...guys the solution is simple. In 2020, there are lots of full analog preamplifiers with excellent dac modules included. Some as options you can build on your needs...( phono section , etc. )
Would you have ant recommendations ? |
WCSS , If they are LED bulbs , you can change them to Incandescent. Incandescent bulbs dim better (dim lower) anyway. If they are led strips , you may not have an option. |
WCSS LEDs Effect on Light Sensitivity and MigraineThe neurological effects of LED lighting remain in question, but there continues to be emerging research in the area. Recently, a French health report acknowledged that intense exposure to the blue light specifically in LEDs can lead to eye damage and natural sleep disturbances. This is consistent with other data that shows blue wavelengths can contribute to the onset of migraine attacks, headaches, eye strain and other symptoms.1,2 Experts were quick to note, however, that these findings do not necessarily extend to our regular exposure to lower-brightness sources—such as smartphone use—although it can produce a cumulative effect over time. That said, they did warn that the strobe-like flickering of some LEDs can absolutely lead to headaches and visual complications. This is supported by other research which indicates that LED-lit LCD devices are more likely to lead to visual symptoms ranging from difficulty refocusing to eye strain and bright light sensitivity. This was especially worsened for those who read on their smartphone in the dark.3 Recently, researchers found that LED exposure—specifically based on color—leads to higher rates of headache and migraine symptoms (including photophobia), giving better insight into the origin of light sensitivity within the eye itself.4 While it is unclear exactly why LED lighting triggers these issues, its inherent properties are believed to play a role. Another offensive source of LEDs are car lights. Their relative brightness, particularly on darkened roads, can negatively affect people without a chronic headache disorder; and they can be especially brutal for those prone to light-sensitive headaches or migraine attacks. Glare, and any pain or discomfort produced by it, can also be an unpleasant side effect of LED exposure on the road.5,6 As a result, it should be no surprise that LED headlights on vehicles are one of the biggest sources for painful light sensitivity at night. LED Lighting Versus Fluorescent LightingWe know that both LEDs and fluorescent lights can cause visual, headache and migraine symptoms. In addition to the high proportion of blue light wavelengths, these issues are likely a direct result of the rapid flicker they both emit. Even more surprising is that this flickering may be more prominent in LED sources, particularly at brightness levels less than 100 percent. This occurs because LEDs can only be completely on or completely off, so they have to produce the flicker in order to simulate these dimmer settings. Arnold Wilkins—one of the leading researchers on lighting and health—has stated that LED bulbs switch on and off hundreds of times per second. This can lead to symptoms of eye movement dysfunction, double vision, headache, dizziness and the feeling of being unwell, all within 20 minutes of exposure! And these effects may be more severe when compared with fluorescent lights. Moreover, people with persistent post-concussion migraine report greater aggravation of their symptoms to LED and LCD displays, including head pain and photophobia.7 In a more direct comparison, certain colors of LED light has been shown to yield fewer negative effects than conventional fluorescents, but more research is needed to verify these findings.8 As a result, the jury is still out regarding whether or not LEDs or fluorescents are worse for people with migraine, light sensitivity or other chronic disorders. Type and Color of LED Lighting MattersWith new technology often comes new features. This is especially true in the development of organic light emitting diodes (OLED) found within many newer devices. Instead of using a backlight, each pixel in an OLED screen produces their own light. And this may change how our brains interpret that light; a small study showed a reduction in the number of “headache days” and corresponding emotional symptoms for migraine patients in environments with this type of lighting versus standard LEDs.9 As a result, this also likely reduces the frequency of episodes of light sensitivity and photophobia. The color of light also matters. As we showed previously, blue light remains a central component of LEDs and continues to be a primary culprit for worsening migraine attacks and sensitivity to light. In addition, red- and white-colored LED lighting also activate areas of the brain that are suspected of producing photophobic and migraine pain. Curiously, green lighting may be the least likely to instigate migraine attacks, but more investigation is needed to determine if any practical applications exist for patients.4 And remember: the color that you see does not necessarily reflect the amount of blue wavelengths you absorb; in fact, cold, white LEDs have the highest concentration of blue light even though they do not directly appear as blue to the eye. |
@rbach Repeatedly ? I think not ! I thought your posts were facts ? Please get over yourself Already !

HMM .....Interesting Mephisto, Mephastophilis and variants) lord of the host, is a demon featured in German folklore. He originally appeared in literature as the demon in the Faust legend, and he has since appeared in other works as a stock character version of the Devil.Contents[show]OriginWhile the name Mephistopheles is frequently used as an alternative form of Satan or the Devil, it evolved during the Renaissance; the name Mephistopheles makes no appearance in the Bible. EtymologyThe name is associated with the story of Faust, a scholar who sold his soul to the demon Mephistopheles for knowledge. There have been a number of attempts to guess the source from which the name is derived. - Some believe it is a play on "Me Fausto philos" and the Latin "Ne Fausto filius", which means either "Friend of Faust" or "No son of Faust".
- Some believe that the name means "He who shuns the light."
- Others trace it to the Latin word ’mefitis’ (also spelt ’mephitis,’ meaning pungent, sulphurous, stinking, and anoxious exhalation from the ground) and ’fel’ (bile, poison), and orthographically dressed as a Greek name, as if transliterated from an imaginary Greek.
- Still others trace it to a rhyme with the name ’(Aristotle), which connotes its opposite. They claim while the name ’Aristotelēs’ means ’noblest purpose’ in Greek, ’Mephistophelēs’ means ’noxious bile,’ in a semi-educated, or perhaps deliberately comic, mixture of Greek and Latin.
- Some trace it to the Hebrew word "Tophel" which means liar. Also, Bachtold-Stäubli has other Hebrew explanations yet for the name.

@whitecamaross A lot of talk about tekton speakers here but why don’t I see a massive amount of owners posting here ? If the product is amazing ( I don’t know and can’t speak about it) why aren’t you all buying it ? I have spoken on many occasions about Tekton speakers and their price to performance ratio but, they have been shunned here because, you and many others here think that if they do not cost an arm and a leg , then they are no good ! |
@whitecamaross To me The Double Impact which I own, sound very detailed and very similar to an electrostatic speaker in that regard, but they have great bass , unlike electrostats . They have great bass down into the low 20hz range. I think the separation of instruments in space is their strong suit. You can easily discern different instruments and their place in the mix. They also present a deep soundstage. Keep in mind they are a four way speaker, but they are very coherent sounding and are very fast on transients .Depending on the recording and your equipment , they can sound like your are there for the live up close performance , but they are not overly analytical. They can play Techno as well as 1940s-1950 Jazz ,and do it very well. I would say that 1980s rock does not sound rGreat. (Ozzy and the like).... Too revealing. They will not make bad recordings sound good . I also think of them as a conduit to what your equipment or cables are. I can easily discern cable or equipment changes. |
@klh007 What can you say about sound differences .. Moab vs Double Impact ? I think the reason that the Moabs cover into the 300 hz range is because they do not have a Midrange driver, unlike the Double Impact. When I look at the Moab, I have concerns about mid-bass. . When you look at the drivers in the Moab , it just seems like they might be lacking in certain freq range around mid-bass 80hz-200hz. That may not at all be the case, and I have no idea which drivers the 12s are but I would like to see the freq response. on them .

@jetter It is obvious you are a WCSS fanboy, we all can see that . I did not know that you deemed yourself "all knowing" and "Almighty". And that we should listen to what YOU think. Excuse Me ! So its not about the Music ? I guess I did miss the bus, but unlike you ,I do not ride the Short Bus. |
These comments by WCSS just proves what i said before . He thinks that cost = performance . Well, he wants us to believe that anyway. I think we all know price does not equal performance . Tell me how Mephisto is so much better ?
|
WCSS I think most of us here are Music fans. We like Music. I think the McIntosh pre-amp/amp with this setup is better for the Music. After all, isn’t that what this is all about.. what makes the best Music ...or not ? I think that you are more of an equipment junkie and not necessarily a Music fan. |
What i mean is The equipment is for one purpose ......Music . We all want to hear the best possible reproduction of the Music through the equipment. right ? It just seems to me that some people here are more hung-up on the equipment (cost-specs ..etc) rather than the sound of the Music through it. I think some stay with certain equipment because of its cost . An example is the Nordost Odin. I think that a lot of times it sounded lean, etched ,hyper detailed , and over analytical with most of the equipment used here but, because of its cost and stature, it stayed here for quite a while.
"After all if it costs mega buck it has to sound good " seems to be the opinion of many.. |
I am not here nor do I post here to get a reaction out of you WCSS. I am here for the Truth. The truth about the the equipment and the sound of the Music through it. |
This thread is definitely more about gear than music...always has been. If I am not mistaken, the purpose of the "Gear" is to play Music ... Right ? Or, Am I wrong. |
Why is it that if you have an opinion that differs with WCSS, the fanboys chime in. Seems that some are here only to back up WCSS. Surely you don't expect to get total buy in or agreement in this thread do you ? |
Ok, what is your purpose for this thread? You just bought a McIntosh integrated, did a video with it, then list it for sale the same day you do the video. |
It is not an attack. I am stating the obvious. |
I don’t post on ANY AUDIO FORUM ANYWHERE. I am doing my thing and don’t care to read what others are doing unless they share it here. That just proves that you are only interested in promoting your agenda. The majority of others here read a lot more than just your thread. They are here to learn about things. You are here to promote what you want to promote, not to learn about equipment or audio. |
I have a Mofi Gain2 release of the Jack Johson album on vinyl.
I love it. It is outstanding! John Mclaughlin’s Guitar playing on "Right Off" is outstanding, especially for the time period
From the same Era, I have an original un-opened, release from 1974
Herbie Hancock "Deathwish" soundtrack as well as a couple the newer re-issues and a 1974 used one.
It is a FAV of mine. check it out
Thank You MR D
|
Mr D , I agree 110%
The Music is what it is all about for me !
Guys check out this playlist
It is ln youtube Music. i use the highest bit rate available, but i am sure it will work on youtube.com
these are just a few of the many 100s or maybe thousands that I have "Thumbed Up"
Well, it looks like it will only let you play them in order. Oh well , jump around some of the better ones are later.
Not a test playlist just some stuff I listen to
I hope you like them
|
|
viber.
Listen especially to 3rd song, Do A Thing
cool violin parts
|
Viber,,
Those academics and Schoenberg, Berg, Webern must have already been into heavy drug use buy then, if they liked the dissonance ..LOL
No I understand them wanting something different. I cannot take listening to standard jazz ( 40s &50s) too much before I get bored.
I like more of the modern freeform type of jazz- and jazz/Fusion
|
I think you are trying to explain something that just cannot be completely understood unless you are there. The absolute best example IMO of this IS : If you have ever been to a Top Fuel Drag Race ? You can try all day to describe and explain it to someone , but being there is UNREAL.. AMAZING ,actually ....especially the first time .!! For those who have been, You completely understand this . |
I will say the Boulders are definitely Fast and Articulate, Not Bloated and Not Warm .Not overly Full or overly Bass ripe. Are they cold and sterile , I don’t think so...Probably very Neutral. Now if you added just a Decent Turntable to play records through this System, I think it would be Damn Hard to Beat. I have a Victor QL-A7 Turn Table that I bought about six months ago. It sat around for about 2 months before I had the courage to even try it. The Cartridge is JVC Z-1S or Victor Nivico MD-1025. I bought a Jico SAS with boron Cantilever Stylus for it (195.00 and worth it )) and wow it is amazing. I have unreal clarity Slam and Dynamics with deep detailed Bass definition. I have never heard any better personally. Of course ,I have not heard many,(Turntable/Analog).. maybe 10 It really IS so much better than digital. I have honestly never heard analog like this. Of course I have only ever owned a Technic’s in the 80s and never really setup a cartridge . it was aligned and installed by the place in Dallas TX that bought it from. I think I had it a couple of years when CDs became the Rage. sold all of my records in the 90s ... BIG Mistake ! I never learned to setup a cartridge , but i know when you get them right , It is Heaven. Interestingly enough, I use the analog out of TT to a Pair of Von Gaylord Chinchilla Interconnects to the McIntosh MX151. BTW the Mx151 has a VERY Good Phono input. It is outstanding. well it should be the retail on the MX151 was $12.400.00. Sorry to rant , I just had to tell about the Excellent Analog Setup |
@himiguel Miguel, I am curious as to what you are listening with or through. What are you using when you listen to Jay’s recorded audio on YouTube of Boulder? |
@whitecamaross i get blocked from buying certain gear from some manufacturers (something you might know or not know I can't imagine hat it would be Magico |
@whitercamaross Just a suggestion In order to appease those who want better recordings , Can you pick out a good 40s-70s jazz recording. You have many on your drive that are Double DSD rate . They have a file extension of .dsf. In JRiver Media Center I can actually sort by all files that have the .dsf extension. Once I had the sorted ,I made a Playlist named DSD ..so all DSD files will play under that list . JRiver had already tagged and retrieved, Artist, song title amd "Album Image" for 90% of them. I would think that you could do something like that with your Vivaldi .......... But maybe not You can always down sample to 192khz. Look to See if You have Miles Davis "Jack Johnson" album.. one cool and great sounding album IMO OR another really cool, dynamic and Great sounding one is ...:Herbie Hancock "Death Wish" from the movie with Charles Bronson 1974. The soundtrack is outstanding.. IMO. Those two are my favorites lately ... that i Have on Vinyl. I usually play them kind of Loud. They are Excellent. I’ll bet you can find some cool ones there , Good Luck |
When you do get a good vinyl (Analog) setup, you’ll be All in ! I used to kind of think that the GUY who kept saying that vinyl is just so much better than digital, was just stuck in his ways, unwilling to embrace the Digital format. It turns out he is Right, and when you experience it you Will Know ! I can crank the Hell out of the Volume when I am playing Vinyl on my setup, with not a hint of brightness or hard shrillness that you can get from digital, and it just gets more detailed , more articulate , more BASS Definition.. ...ETC .It not only gets louder, It get better!! Oh BTW I am using an excellent stereo amp for the price on the Used market( IMO as well as many others) ....gets great reviews . It is the Belles 150A V2 Reference Power Amp |
@skebet and all who do not know about this
Download the "Shazam" app on your phone. While playing the song from Jays video , (of course you cant be using your phone as your player or source of the music ) open the app and click the icon and Shazam... It tells you the name of the song and Artist.
|
Well I am not sure that I picked unprocessed songs. I think we all mostly listen to music that is processed in some way or another. I probably should pick some Music that is recorded live for that. I think in todays world there is very little recorded music that is not processed . There is a lot of Old Jazz Standards
"so to speak",Trios and Quartets ..etc ", but personally , I find them mostly boring or repetitious... not all mind you ... but most I actually picked out 2 songs of Jazz from the Live London Jazz Scene . 2 modern Blues songs and 1 or 2 songs from the albums I mentioned earlier. I di8d not get that sent to WCSS until about 4AM today. I hope he got them in time. |
Jay mentioned using headphones to listen, but if you have a way to play it (youtube) on your own home system, or your main listening rig , it will be a lot closer to what things would sound like in your room. I have not tried this but if you have a smart tv , you can run the youtube app and hook up optical or coaxial cable from the output on the TV to your DAC? Pre-Amp..etc. I have no idea how good the sound is from the tv output, but I am pretty sure most of the newer tvs have this. It might be worth a try..
|
Are the Tekton Ulfberht completely broken in ? They are not new are they ? How long have they been running in a system ? They will sound awful if they are new and not broken in. Flat sounding and ,lacking in Bass and Dynamics with be how they sound, if they have not been properly run in for 150-200 hours
|
And now I hear a slight faint hissing sound through the tweeters when nothing is playing
Hmmm. That hiss could be from the speaker's "High Sensitivity",
Hint to you guys guessing. I am thinking they may be 92db or higher in sensitivity
|
Probably closer to 94db-96db. like the...4 way ......
FOCAL--GRANDE UTOPIA EM EVO
That is the new speaker he has in his room.
I could be wrong
|
I kind of like Starsound Technologies approach to dealing with vibrations and resonance. They have researched and analyzed Isolation – Absorption – Resonance Transfer . IMO Their Platforms work very well.. The original was Sistrum Apprentice Paltforms http://starsoundtechnologies.com/liveVibeDetails2.php?THE-PROVING-GROUNDS-3All of their current offerings and all with 100% Total Customer Satisfaction Guarantee http://starsoundtechnologies.com/Products.phpNow ,I am not saying that they will work on the Boulder Amps . It sounds like the people at Boulder are saying that the amps are designed in a way that already addresses those vibration, resonance issues. The speakers may benefit the most from some Starsound platforms , BUT, it is probably not feasible for the 450Lb , Behemoth, Wilson Alexx |
@whitecamaross BTW, i really liked your personal review of the Tekton Ulfbhert video. I thought that you gave a very honest , detailed explanation of the sound of those in your room and what they do well and some of what you thought might be lacking as compared to Wilson. Which speaker cables , which IC from Source to Pre and which IC I really think that the Bass would become faster, more defined and more detailed and articulate, when those bass drivers loosen up . That does take a couple of hundred hours or more in most cases . Now if you were to play some really dynamic music at pretty loud levels , it would get better.. quicker. Actually , I have an equipment "Break In" Disc from a well known manufacturer. Remind me to send it to you. It is supposed to help speed up the break in process. As much new gear as you get ,it could be very helpful to get your stuff sounding better, in less time. |
I t would be useful to know how low the Wilson's actually measure in Jays room, and if there are any room modes that need to be addressed, then one would know how flat the response is because more than likely it could be enhanced with a bit of dsp. I believe that Chris at Computer Audiophile or whatever that sites called now had that done with his Wilsons and said the improvement was profound.
This is why I urged Jay Very Hard to TRY the Lyngdorf Roomperfect , when he had the Mx160.. . It really isn't that hard to setup , several videos on it. I really wished that you had , so that you could at least give your opinion on it . I would bet that it would win you over. Maybe not , but I so wanted you to try it . It will integrate all of those subs and it will give you the best Bass that you have ever heard. read about it or ask anyone who uses it or has used it . I am quite sure that they will agree. |
"forget which established editor at Stereophile called the Pass XA-60.5’s the best amplifier he’s ever heard! He used the live performance as his reference." Well, I have heard a lot of live performances that SUCK ! Large venues , especially outdoors are almost impossible to make sound good. I would say that a live performance at a Jazz or Blues club would be much better. Have you ever listened to the NPR tiny desk concerts? That is the type of Live performance that would be a Good Reference IMO. but that argument is ..that while it may have been live when recorded, but, unless you were there listening in person , it is really not live , but recorded Live. I think sounding real is a better term than live . I think that everyone can agree that Live concerts, performances, etc do not always sound better than a studio recording. The size of the venue ,and your seating position will make more difference on the sound than a lot of other things. Hell , it is next to impossible to make it sound good for all. I did hear that the "US" concert sounded good almost everywhere. Of course Steve Jobs spared no expense when it came to all of that. Yopu will not see that again. BTW if you ever get the chance, what the "US" Concert Video that shows the behind the Scenes making of it . very interesting and COOL |
Please don't reveal yet.I have yet to hear it on my big system at home. I will in the morning Wednesday morning. 26th. The question is ...can someone tell me which output tubes are used on the VAC amps I know there is like 12 of them or 24.... whatever. Are they 6550s or the kt88s kt120s..... what are they. ..please?
|
≈ hours on tubes ?
Any idea of the brand of KT88 Tubes ?
They kind of look like Electro-Harmonix KT88
XLR "IN" on each amp or single ended (rca) ?
|
Well , unfortunately my db meters says that #2 is a couple of db quieter than #1
#1 sounds more "Real" to me, even though it is a bit thinner also.
Dynamics is outstanding on #1. I prefer #1 because it sounds more "Real"
I say #1 is the VAC
. We really need a better song That Japanese English ..not too good.
It all sounds very up tilted in the upper mids to me I am not sure if it is the song or what. It is as if someone eQed it down in the bass and up in the upper mids to highs.
That could be the Focal sound ????
If so..... Me No Like It !
|
Ok for part 2
once again. I think #1 is more real sounding.
I think #1 is VAC.
|
for part 3 I like presentation #2.
It sounds more REAL to me. I also think it is the VAC
i agree with Kenr
Part 1 presentation #1 for me
Part 2 presentation #1 for me
Part 3 presentation #2 fore me
I also think that these are VAC
|
Wow,
I was completely wrong about which presentations was tube.
I chose all 3 of the solid-state presentations.
Well, at least I consistently picked the same setup every time. LOL
Of course, I have never heard any of this setup combination anywhere, at any time, prior to this shootout.
Congratulations to the Gryphon/ Solution setup... Simply Amazing. I would have bet that this setup was tubes.
.
Thank You Jay
|
The huge soundstage of the Gryphon/Solution is actually one of the reasons that I thought it was Tubes. I just did not want to say that, because I thought that was my secret to Identifying the VAC. Tubes are known to give a Huge Soundstage as compared to Solid State. It turns out that Gryphon/ Solution gives a Huge Soundstage also...Even bigger than the VAC.
It fooled me for sure 😮
