My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Thank you.
This exercise is done with a speaker that also retails for 6 figures just like the M6. It is heavier and larger than M6. I want you all to click the links above and listen and then post your thoughts here. This is about preferences, YOUR PREFERENCE... NOBODY is wrong or right.
Let me hear your thoughts here on this thread. More videos coming over the next few days that will make it easy for you to compare. Once i have had enough teasers, I’ll be front and center unveiling the beast...but i need to get your feedback first without you knowing what speaker it is in order to avoid the typical bias that exists when we know what brand it is. Just listen to the videos and post your thoughts. Deal ?
I removed my response to you in order to avoid friction or any bickering. I appreciate your feedback above but to be honest i am simply not taking my channel in that direction. Nothing personal. Don't take it the wrong way.
Time will tell if this speaker will stay. Im unfortunately cruising at 25,000 ft in the air and there aren’t many more options here that don’t cost as much as a house.
I’m erasing the brand name until after we hear a few more songs allowing people to have an open mind. I will keep using the baby essence for this exercise which is doing a great job. Then once i unveil it, we will begin to move up to beefier amps like the Antileon Evo that sits here on the sidelines
New speaker with stereo Gryphon Essence amplifier:

Same song with Magico M6 and Gryphon Essence monoblocks:

https://youtu.be/MrxMD6v7asY?t=334

NOT ONE PERSON has guessed what speaker it could be. 😂
I’m loving this... When you all see the speaker, heads will roll on the floor...
I love doing this to you all because it negates the typical "bias" that exists when we know what it is. It is much better to do it this way.

i already gave enough hints... over 92 db efficient, 6 digit msrp, heavier than m6..taller than m6..
You mean to tell me there are hundredths of speakers that fall within those parameters? really? ...
I requested this from audiogon since i became a verified dealer in order to sell the components i cycle through.
Just read the hints i posted above... They are 100% accurate and there are no surprises either.
that is a funny comment. i have been looking at the youtube comments and it looks like many think it is a horn speaker. I guess the huge dynamics and impressive vocals are giving it away...
i am actually shocked you like this new speaker more than the Magico M6 Viber... I was under the impression that you were all about neutrality
Just wait for the video that i am releasing in about 30 min.. i am very vocal about my initial impressions and some of you might be able to identify what speaker it is based on what i will be talking about.
I hope you all watch the video.

FACT: THIS IS THE BEST IMAGING SPEAKER I HAVE EVER HAD OUT OF ANY SPEAKER I HAVE OWNED BY BUS LENGHTS. Nothing comes remotely close to this monster with regards to imaging and dynamics - nothing that i have owned.

Quick facts i have gathered:

  • best dynamics by miles
  • best imaging by miles
  • best bass in my room (full, complete, never lethargic)

This highly efficient speaker will be amazing for me to review amplifiers with. It won’t punish those amps that are only 50 watts like the M6 did. I am GLAD i made the move and i must admit i was scared as hell because i had never heard it. I was afraid the size would overload my room, but man oh man... All my fears have now vanished and i am speechless each day i continue to play with it. All i want to do is keep giving it more volume because i can’t get enough of it.
This Friday i will unveil what it is.

Thank you

Well guys, i was going to drag it a few more days but i sense a bit of desperation so i am revealing the speaker tomorrow at 10am ET:
Turn on your notifications!

I will be on the "live chat" section of the video releasing today at 10am
Talk to you all soon
Thanks man. More to come soon.
Lots of people wanted to hear a different flavor, but i dont control what is available to me. I gotta work with what is on the table and hand pick from there. Obscure brands from other continents are just not things i can play with unless the guys who work with my local Waste Management want a nice present from me. In this case, i am sure they would be willing to come into the room and crate things up and haul them on top of the garbage truck.
The reason WHY i dont venture too far "out into the woods" with regards to brands is because MOST OF YOU won’t come rescue me when i need to get out. If there was demand for these other specialty brands THEN i would gladly buy the name brands thrown at me.
Look at the Soulution 701s monoblocks listed on here? $55k and they are $170-180k MSRP, current model and yet they ARE NOT moving... Let’s say i bought a new set of these for 90k today, WHO IN THE HELL is going to pay me 90k for them when there is a set for 55k on there? This proves my point... I got a family to feed and part of the reason why i am able to keep doing what i am doing is because i study the used market  A LOT as well as the desirability of a particular product.

I looked at the Aida 2 - nothing is being built for like 8 months so i passed
I looked at the Ultra 9s - nothing available to me
I looked at Rockport Lyra - nothing available to me

i can not look at MBL because those are hard to drive speakers that need their own amps so how in the world can i present to you a Gryphon Essence with a speaker that hungry? - Impossible
i thought about horns, but not long enough to truly give them a shot

I looked at the Alexx V, but then the XLF came to my attention and after pondering it for a few weeks, i thought "what the hell, let's try it because the Alexx V aint going nowhere anytime soon and the XLF is not exactly a speaker that is presented to me everyday plus i want to be able to draw parallel comparisons between it and the former Alexx which i have owned in order to see what else this big speaker brings to the table that the Alexx did not (i will go over this in a future video).

I appreciate the recommendations above, but i just got these monsters and they haven't been set up correctly yet.
I'd like to circle back to any of the speakers above if possible in the future.
Synergistic Research fuses should be coming to me. All my gryphon gear will get upgraded fuses and the dcs Rossini with the clock will too BUT after the shootout.
I briefly cued a few songs from some music i received from greyhound and as i began to play some of the reference recordings on there, the astonishing clarity, bass and soundstage is even more present. It feels as if the rear mounted tweeter only kicks in when the recording is recorded really well and with a big soundstage. Quite interesting i must say.
The rear tweeter is not playing at the same volume as the front tweeter. It's very minute.
These suckers have grown on me but i can't properly set them up until vicoustics comes to pick up all these damn panels they sent me in the wrong color...
By the way, many are asking me on the youtube comment section if the xlf is better than the m6 and i can not answer that because i have only owned the xlf for a week. I need to live with it before i can begin to compare to the m6.
Part of the reason why i brought the xlf was to find out if it is better or worse than the Alexx i had in here. I believe stereophile said the Alexx was better than the XLF, but i 200% disagree with this. The Alexx is harder to drive, the bass was never quite right (in my room of course) and it did not do the crazy imaging the XLF does. Also, based on the in-room measurements from John Atkinsons, the XLF measured better in Michael's room than the Alexx. John also preferred the fullness of the XLF to the Alexx.

To be quite honest, and yes i know i have not heard every single speaker, i can not think of a speaker that can beat the XLF when you factor-in the money it can be had for now that it has been discontinued. Trust me i looked at ALL OPTIONS and NOTHING gave me the feeling that it could beat the XLF for the money. Will i ever bring the Alexx V ?
I plan to at some point, but i am quite scared to be honest because the scale of this speaker has me possessed.
Word on the street is that the XLF was retired because Focal was not going to sell Wilson more woofers so Wilson had to pull the plug on it. Wilson has enough replacement drivers, but Focal decided to not continue to support their needs with new XLFs.
Here is an overview of the Wilson Audio XLF which has not been done on youtube before.
I hope you enjoy!

https://youtu.be/uvNHoaYFOTc

unfortunately, if i decide to keep these for longer, i won’t be bringing more speakers (most likely) because it is impossible to fit more speakers in here and moving the XLF is pretty much shifting my carpet all over the place. It is hard as hell to move them around so i think i probably won’t be having more speakers in here.
If you heard my baby essence Gryphon with 92.6 efficient speakers...you'd have a change of heart. The Gryphon Essence stereo has won me over and over.
I respect Michael's work. That said, i don't have to agree with everything he reviews.
There is always the possibility that his dartzeel monos weren't quite as pure sounding in the mids as the essence gryphon and the XLF communicated this to home. Too many ways to interpret his findings such as his room, cabling, components etc.
I don't feel i need more vocals. They sound great to me and the bass is fuller even at low volumes.
you can not "choke" both ports...
Before i embark on boosting anything on the speaker i need to get my panels here (hopefully this week) and also spike the speakers so that the entire speaker sits lower and not as high as it currently is with casters on. Once that is done THEN i can explore with adjustments.
Gryphon Essence stereo amp & Wilson Audio Alexandria XLF playing a song that has been on my channel since the beginning of time:
https://youtu.be/vFmC1V-FetM
there is no perfect speaker - i have said this over and over. If i were to be ruthless, i could say "ok i can understand if you feel the xlf has too much energy or vocals or whatever", but i could also say the magico m6  requires for you to empty your 401k (if you got any) in order to buy the electronics needed or an argument could be made by some that it is too damn bright.
What argument would you all have about it?
When it comes to coherence, i can tell you that is is flawless. It feels as one cohesive unit at all times.
Last but not least, and i am going to assume nobody will deny this fact, this is the most devastating speaker when it comes to slam and dynamics. Easily the most explosive, dynamic speaker i have owned by an entire zip code. Nothing is anywhere close to it.
Before i forget, how many times have i PERSONALLY said on video that when you bring a new speaker into the room OFTEN TIMES you have to re-work all-if not most of your system UNLESS you are bringing a speaker from the same brand with the same characteristics? I think you all are forgetting these tiny facts... My entire system or what you heard is primarily to work perfectly with Magico. Ever thought that just MAYBE i need transparent cabling or other brands? What about VTL tube amps? or Gryphon Antileon? how about spiking the XLF first and fine tune the time alignment? i mean, i did use the mpods on the m6 and i also had it positioned based on the measurements from REW.  Lots of things to do here guys... You are hearing a very "naked" speaker with NOT A DAMN THING done for it. NADA, NOTHING ZIP, NOT even the spikes...

Too many variables. I also would love to know WHERE the critics go to listen to these recordings. It would be helpful to understand their reference point which is what they are using to pass judgement on the XLF. I get it if some hate it just like there were some that also hated the M6. I am not embarking on a battle against anyone because this is why things are very subjective. If it serves as any point of reference, i have NEVER had a Youtube video receive anywhere near as many likes or views as the video where i unveiled the XLF. The algorithm from Youtube stated the following:

"Videos such as this one that have a higher click-through rate and hold the attention of regular viewers of your channel are more likely to be recommended to viewers watching similar videos and therefore get more views

Consider checking this video’s audience retention to see if there are any key moments that are particularly good at keeping viewers watching

More views from YouTube recommendations

This video got 4,819 views from recommendations on YouTube Home and “Up next”. Videos on your channel typically receive 1,400–2,200 in this time frame.

Higher click-through rate

Regular viewers of your channel chose to watch this video 21.8% of the time it was shown to them, instead of the usual 14.0%–15.0%.

Note that this value differs from the overall click-through rate as regular viewers, who are familiar with your channel, are more likely to choose to watch your videos.

Longer average view duration

On average, regular viewers of your channel watched this video for 08:41 — that’s 05:10 longer than usual.

Note that this value differs from the overall average view duration as regular viewers, who are familiar with your channel, are more likely to watch longer"

All i am saying is that sometimes it helps if people take the time to read the Youtube comments from the entire world and not just the thread. If they feel different about it then yes they can accept they are part of the minority and not the majority. - Nothing wrong with that either.

The issue is i don't see anyone with a 200k pair of speakers using aluminum foil, tinned wire, etc...
Video i just shot a few minutes ago.
A few changes have occurred. Watch the caption to know what i did

I suggest that you all watch the video a few hours later. Yes , i got confirmation that the sound will keep improving about an hour or two after because YouTube "stabilizes" the video during this time.
There will always be those who will tell you that they don’t go to the beach because there is too much sand... 😂
The comments here and the comments on youtube are like comparing Hawaii to Alaska. You should read both platforms and then post your personal thoughts.
Great song. Thanks for this. I will be sure to use it on a future video. Tremendous bass.
