My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

M3 doesn’t scale as large...I’m not sure why people think that if you grab a pair of bookshelf speakers and use 2 subs that you can get the same effect as their larger sibling speakers but without subs?
Some fail to take into consideration the crossover points on the larger speaker versus the smaller speaker plus the fact that the larger size cabinet makes a difference too. The height of the tweeter on the larger speaker.
Have you not noticed the bottom of the m6 vs the m3? The m6 rides on 3 mpods versus 4 on the m3. There is more mass "floating in the air" with the m6.
Speaking of the Alexx having 2 midrange drivers versus one on the Alexia 2. How about sasha versus alexia ? The Alexia is more effortless much larger sounding.
I don’t know why people have this perception that adding subs to smaller speakers gets you the same sound as the larger siblings. That’s a myth in most case and probably only true if the speaker manufacturer is a terrible designer.
Having owned both the m3 and m6, the gap in performance is huge. The m3 is not the same cabinet as m6.
The m6 has a "monocoque" design built by a company in Canada that builds submarines and fusilage for airplanes. They might look the same but internally they are not even close.
Also, the crossover on the m6 has superior premium parts not found in the m3.
Currently, the m6 is used by soulution in their factory to build electronics and synergistic research uses mágico as well to manufacture cables.
Besides the bass improvement, you also get a superior dispersion and precision to the nth degree.
Is the standard mercedes s550 the same as the s65 amg? They might look similar on the outside..but pop the hood and the preconceived idea will soon be wiped out.
Why no Analog?
I'm a bit lazy to embark on buying vinyl and storing them. With as much gear as i go through, I'd have a hard time making vinyl work in my current environment.

Is cost reflected on the quality?
9 times out of 10, yes. There is some overpriced stuff out there that should be a third of the msrp. If you are spending a lot of money, try to stick to the names that have earned such high prices. Mágico and wilson have always been at the top but they aren't exactly everyone's cup of tea.
I don't know why there is an argument over m3 and m6 when I've had both in my possession...both are great but the m6 vastly superior. The only knock is i am having a hard time finding qualified gear for the m6... I'm almost forced to buying gear of less prestige than the m6...
Yep but the big boy stuff for this m6 is almost like finding UFOs....called all my sources and nobody has it or they have only seen it on magazines...things like the dartzeel 468s... constellation hercules... soulution 701s... That level of firepower needs to be ordered...

Don’t worry about my due diligence. I simply shared it for transparency, but it appears that it backfired on me.
I guess it goes with the territory of being active on a forum and on YouTube. I’ll have to learn to thicken my skin.

Tecknik...i meant hercules mk2...not the ones you mentioned which have been there for over 2 years...those are mk1...
I don’t really check other websites. I have been scammed 3 times already and just recently was part of another big scam. When you are looking for this level of gear, you should be working with established businesses or people that you are 100% sure of.
It’s not the same sending someone 50k for something or 5k... I don’t expect you to understand that though since you are probably not searching for equipment as often as i do.
Techno:
Mephisto can drive m6. I failed to articulate that i am playing with equipment that sounds great even though it is modestly priced ( 60.8 monos). However, this doesn’t mean that i can’t get more out of the speakers. There is far more potential that I haven’t started to tap into when it comes to these speakers.
So far, the dac direct into the 60.8s has sounded amazing. Today i picked up a Preamplifier locally so let's see what it does.
hi Joecasey
i have not looked into escrow.com. That might be something worth looking into.
I wish it was that simple without legal repercussions...
What you all need to know is that if you send someone money and they decided to "turn bad" that one time and just take your money, it will take thousands upon thousands of dollars of attorney fees to recuperate it. The cops aint coming to save ya... Cops got bigger fish to fry than to worry about your money to buy audio components.
You send someone 10k to buy something and they scam you, it will cost you another 10k in lawyer fees plus a lengthy process to get it back on top of all the headache, drama, time off of work and anxiety.
The law protects the thief/crook/scammer as much as it protects you.
I am warning you all.. You don’t get your money back by calling the cops on someone.. It does not work that way... It takes lawyers and spending money to recuperate the money you have lost.
I simply don't understand how these crooks sleep at night... I hardly get any sleep if i am dealing with a complex task at work!!
There is nothing more important to me than knowing i don't owe anyone a damn thing and i don't have to hide my face.
Ok. It’s pretty sad to have to do business thinking in advance that someone could scam you. Its like getting married and doing a prenup because you feel you will be taken to the cleaners. It’s like sleeping with the enemy at that point!
I guess i should think different going forward. I never do business thinking in advance how to do someone wrong. That crap comes back to you in the end.
I consulted with lawyers. If you handle things the wrong way, it can cost you as well....
You can't plaster things online plus the moderators will probably take that down in order to avoid legal action from anyone.
Interesting. I’m here fine tuning the speaker positioning and trying different cables with the soulution before I do the first video of soulution with m6. Should be an interesting video.
The m6 tweeter is 8K resolution, the alexx, Alexia 2 and sasha daw were 4K
Dynaudio c4, alexia 1 were all 1080p in comparison.
I can even hear the "warmish" presentation of the pass labs components and some of the last tiny details being absent at times but i don't know if it is the small 60.8 or the xp32. More components to come around june. Let's play with more affordable gear this month and next month until i begin to push the gas pedal in may and june...
Get ready, in June you will see the world premiere of electronics that nobody has ever introduced on youtube:
Monos with pure class a
Battery powered linestage
Gryphon-like grip and control

I placed the order today and it will all be here in 8-10 weeks... For now, let's do the smaller offerings until we begin to put 101 octane race fuel in here and go full throttle.
How can a speaker display dynamics when the song playing doesn’t really have any? .... 😫
I smell magico hatred 😂Hey it happens.... But this also goes to show one thing: people don’t really wonder or stop to think that MAYBE you are begining to detect "digital" characteristics from my DCS due to the magico m6s superb transparency?
How can it be a speakers fault to sound digital/artificial when the source is digital?
Where is there a report that claims that dcs sounds analog...send me the link...ill take a seat and wait..
This is awesome that you guys have preferences. The mágico guy will hate wilson and vice versa. Meanwhile I am just here trying to enjoy both and take notes. Both have strengths and weaknesses and i will go over those in a future video.
I have love for both but in different ways. I understand both camps 100%. I couldn't ever tell a mágico or wilson owner they are wrong for choosing either speaker.
For now, stay with me, keep riding and let's keep going forward. The ride should be what matters and not the destination because the destination might never come.
Guys,
Dcs uses wilson alexx at the factory... Dcs is built around wilson Audio so yes you heard excellent synergy. Alon Wolf (MAGICO CEO and lead engineer) uses MSB....
These are minute details that are overlooked and most importantly with what was arguably MAGICOs best speaker up until the M9 was released.
You hear everything with this speaker. If the source is bright, you get brightness. If the song is harsh then you will hear harshness.
Soulution is also extremely transparent and with muscle.
Remember, this is the starting point...
I literally grabbed a soulution integrated and a pass labs xp32 and began to play.
I already have the next "tank" in the room ready to inject some juice into the M6.
I’m only playing with pass labs and soulution 530 to entertain you all more than me. I know exactly where to go in order to accelerate and push things to sonic bliss never heard in my room before. I’m giving you  "talk" and creating a reality show for you all to simply present thoughts and opinions. Think of this as the "intermission" for the audience. The main show is months away.
I’ve been doing this long enough to know what to put front and center between the speakers.
Did i not say i was going to go cheaper electronics ? You all got spoiled  by the Boulder artillery i had here. Admit it 😂
That's how it was displayed at the florida audio expo in 2019...it was indeed amazing.
Magico and Wilson could not be more different.
During my time in the Army, i learned to like Dr. Pepper after seeing my buddies drink it all the time. Today, i still like it, but i don't think i would given it a shot if i had not been in the military. (yes, for those of you who might not know Dr Pepper is a popular soft drink in the military).
With that said, liking Magico or Wilson is no different. I have noticed that some folks go on an all out assault against both brands, but they have not owned either?
I have been very vocal about taking audio shows with a grain of salt and not assuming that what you hear there is what you will hear at home.

To me, and excuse me for being blunt here, the most qualified feedback i can get is that which comes from an actual owner or former owner of any particular product (audio or non audio-related). I don't really want to hear from the person who has not spent time with the item (and again this is no disrespect).
If i wanted to learn more about what it is like to be a doctor, i am not asking the nurse; I am asking a doctor for feedback as to what he/she does on a daily basis and what are the challenges of his/her profession.
Lastly, and this is something that i am sure most of you know, but i will go ahead and say it, when you see someone bashing or hating on ANY product, take a look at his/her system and who they are and 9 times out of 10 you will have your answer as to why they feel this way.
I can't replace with Alexx V until later this year or next year. I need to let the "hype" die off first. Besides,  i have a lot of plans for this M6 with electronics i have never owned. I have done Wilson long enough to understand what it does and it does not do. I don't feel i know the M6 as much as i know  any Wilson speaker.
Interesting... I have thought about moving to Texas actually... Big horsepower cars, big homes, plenty of space...
Kren
I haven’t had long listening sessions just yet because I’m accomodating the speaker. When I had the alexx i had the electronics for it. Im doing things slowly with the m6... I want to watch them grow if that makes sense.
@thezaks:

When i said " I dont want to hear", I meant it as "i don’t consult or gather input". It was not to restrict any form of opinion from being shared here. Opinions is what this is all about anyhow, but that does not mean i personally let them shape my own. I am also not trying to shape anybody’s opinion on what sounds good to them.
The most abrasive part of giving an opinion is when it is not substantiated with facts behind it (whatever they might be). I don’t take any negative comments or attacks towards Magico or Wilson personal because i am not under their payroll, they don’t sign my checks, i am not sponsored by them. Let them go to battle with their own critics.
I do, however, feel a bit surprised that some of the nastiest criticism  comes from those who have limited exposure or experience with the brands you all see regularly on my youtube channel.
Also, i am not strictly speaking only about this thread or my channel. This is a holistic feeling that i have about critics.
Sorry for not making it clear before.

Please note: This is our starting point with the M6. We will only go up the ladder from here when it comes to electronics.
Future videos with Magico M6 include Pass labs Xp32 with pass labs xa60.8 monoblocks. Soon after that, we will begin with the usual suspects in terms of electronics.

I plan to try that at some point. That said, I can't really evaluate amplifiers if I biamp speakers with different amps. In his system, it's good because he doesn't do what I do. He has a reference system that he has built by doing a lot of tweaks which includes a magnepan tweeter on his speakers.

Thanks Dave. Each song sounds different. Im glad you picked that up.
Do you recall me mentioning about the "8K" tweeter in the Magico m6? this is what you also hear with these tracks. You can feel and hear how "inferior" (by comparison) the 1st track is to the 2nd or 3rd track right? That is EXACTLY what this speaker is easily able to do that others didn’t quite capture. This differentiation is much more apparent here by way of the lack of "refinement" or "resolution" with different tracks. That said, we have to also give it to the Soulution 530 integrated because it is indeed quite transparent. With Pass Labs you get a more mellow presentation that does not really take on this "digitized" feeling; It simply takes the digital signal, adds its sweeteners, processes it and then serves it to you without any "weird" aftertaste.
This aftertaste is what could be identified  as "digital, artificial".

A couple of things:

1. The amplifiers in here are a couple of notches below the monster gryphon Mephisto and boulder hence less bass
2. Sealed cabinet bass is different. It hits you when it has to hit you. No extension felt unless called for.
3. Speakers have about 200 hours of total playtime. They shall improve over the next few weeks.
4. You are hearing more of "what is".
5. There is bass here But the speaker won’t give it to you without the proper ancillary equipment.
Different approaches to sound reproduction.
More to come over the next few weeks before I begin to push the envelope with electronics.
Does Jay have vinyl coming? Tube front end? Just wait and see...this is going to get better and better with each video.

Mike has the speakers very very far apart (maybe like 12 feet?) and the adjustability of the entire system is great too. I liked the way things sounded which you will get to hear on the video i shot at this place. I can appreciate ANY SYSTEM that sounds great regardless of the money spent. I am sure that many of you have systems that kick ass and yet only cost about 10% of what i have in mine.

Hopefully this video with MIkey has shown you all that for me it is not about dumping a ton of money into a system and that this is the only way to get things to sound right. I am simply playing with components that yes, they are out of reach for many but i remain objective. I even voted the Joseph Audio room the best room at CAF 2021 and there were rooms with systems costing far more money there.

Ultimately, i would like for all of you to understand that the fact that i am playing with this level of gear is EXACTLY what makes me valuable because if i came into your house TODAY, heard your affordable system that you have put together by working your @ss off and was blown away, wouldn’t that make you say: "wow, this compliment is coming from a guy who has had just about EVERYTHING and who plays with some of the best stuff out there and yet he is highly impressed by what i have put together in here".

Wouldn’t that feel good for you?  I want for the guy who owns the Ferraris and Lambos to praise my Turbo Honda Civic after he takes it for a test drive. You want people with greater reference points to be that extra set of ears because your goal should be to aspire to make things even better (assuming your budget allows).

I have said it before, and i will repeat it again: If something sounds damn good, i will be vocal about how good it sounds regardless of price. Please, erase that idea from your head that if i came over to hear your system that I probably wouldn't like it because it is not as expensive as mine. This is BS and hopefully you all now have a greater appreciation for what I am doing. I am not doing this to be cheerleader for the ultra high end (although that is for the most part what i have been presenting on my channel). I am here to be vocal about ANYTHING that impresses me so next time I am in your neck of the woods and you want my honest opinion (yes i will be real with you about how i feel about your system), feel free to let me know.

Thanks guys for the love and the support !

Jay

That's very interesting indeed. I got plenty of bass in here with the Daw.

Tomorrow you all will hear the pass labs xp32 with xa60.8... let's see what you guys prefer!
Please note:
Comparing the two videos above isn't apples to apples. The missing component is the Boulder 2110 which is serious. We still haven't tried a standalone Preamp so we don't know how it will open up.

I wrapped up a face to face interview with Mike from Suncoast audio yesterday. He was in my room listening to the M6  and i managed to get his impressions on the soulution and pass labs set up.
You will all be shocked at what he preferred...
I had a chance to hear gt audio speakers at axpona 2018 and i thought they were one of the best speakers there. I know since then they have made improvements to their design so i expect them to be far better. I would love to hear them with Gryphon Amplifiers or Boulder.
Speaking of Gryphon and Boulder; i gotta admit that i miss those suckers dearly. You never know what you got until it’s gone I guess?
It's HARD AS HELL once you try the upper echelon... You simply have a hard time adjusting to lesser gear.
Henry...i don't think you follow my journey here. I have already articulated why i am doing what i am doing.
Henry,
Just go with the flow man... 😆
Enjoy the journey...what's the harm in trying cheaper electronics with the m6? Why not do what nobody else has done? You might be surprised at the outcome...
Remember this particular post by me in about 7 days... "You could be surprised" ...
4 hour listening session just wrapped up.
The only thing i will say is that this secret  amplifier here has COMPLETELY won me over...
Managed to keep me glued to my chair and just unable to stop listening for hour after hour. I am completely speechless.
In 2 weeks you all will know. Expect great things because what i am hearing is just world class.
You can't play anything you feel like playing on youtube. They get blocked. Copyrights
You guys are your worst enemies... You now realize HOW things really REALLY change when you go from top tier amps such as gryphon, boulder, etc to second tier amps such as pass labs, simaudio , etc ?
I was criticized for only bringing expensive stuff in and now that i tried the cheaper offerings, the speaker i now have seems to be taking all the heat and criticism 😂
You all can hear the change in quality through youtube when changing tier groups of electronics. Now imagine how it is to live with this stuff?
You gotta admit that i had you all very VERY spoiled with crazy electronics...
I have less room for error than before because i set the bar so high for myself that anything below it is considered a failure.
I get the feeling most of you want the pass labs stuff out of here and don't have really any interest in any brand in the same category.
I created a monster huh 😂
Ever wonder what beasts such as Gryphon and Boulder would do to a revealing speaker like Magico?  what about tube amps like ARC 160M?
there is SO MUCH MORE we can try with this speaker. Nobody buys a speaker and nails it 100% of the time with with the electronics they already own. Part of buying a speaker is also "accommodating" it with the best electronics for it.

Krell 300i Integrated has arrived today and it is going through the motions. Stay tuned to find out if this unit is any good.
